Unemployment Extension 2010

By January 30, 2011

Follow me on:

In December 2010, federal unemployment insurance was extended for 13 months. This means that federal extended unemployment benefits (up to 99 weeks in states with high unemployment) will continue through 2011.

However, the agreement does not include a tier 5 of unemployment for workers (99ers) who have exhausted all state and federal unemployment benefits.

If you're not sure about the status of your benefits, check with your State Unemployment Office web site for details on who qualifies and when and how benefits will be paid.

If you have run out of unemployment or are about to lose your unemployment benefits, here's what to do when unemployment runs out.

If you're out of work, please add your story to our collection:

hi, thanks for the update on this subject, i really, really hope something gets done … for admittedly selfish reasons, but then again those higher-ups never seem to have a problem with being selfish …

I called yesterday to extend my benefits. State of Florida said I had 93 dollars left in my account and that needed to be exhausted by Feb. 22nd. I will receive my last check tomorrow. Keep in mind, I received no warning letter of this deadline date. If I would’ve known this….maybe I wouldn’t have worked so hard to take long term sub jobs and volunteer at 3 schools, while on unemployment. Once again, a nation that penalizes a laid off teacher due to budget cuts. A teacher trying to get in the door again. Ridiculous!

As of last night, Senator Bunning, Kentucky, was the holdout against approving an unemployment extension. The National Employment Law Project is suggesting calling your Senator, as well as contacting the Senate Republican Leadership, Senators McConnell (R-KY), (202) 224-2541, and Kyl, (202) 224-4521. Senator Bunning’s number is (202) 224-4343

Great, what does Bunning care. His state doesn’t have any where near the unemployment rate Michigan does. I’m sure he never voted against any funding for his state because it would add to the defecit!!

(6) Shakaama Live says:

I hate to bring a very harsh and real reality to this, but… No one reports this, but unemployment amongst Black men is nearly double. In some parts of the country it is up to nose bleed rates, 50%. It cannot be a coincidence that even Black factory workers have not been asked back to work. Regardless of my own education and extensive experience, they find every excuse not to hire me.

And, now we find that AIG, that just paid huge bonuses to their executives, will be asking congress for yet another bailout. So, yes extend unemployment to real Americans who are going to spend their money to keep other real Americans employed.

(7) Over-educated, unemployed and old says:

Having worked from the age of 16 and now age 58 makes me wonder if any of these brilliant wonders in Congress really understand or even care about the lives of so many people who are hurting. If me and my fancy degrees cannot obtain employment, what about the others with less education and skills and God forbid a criminal record for using, not selling drugs. God help us all.

Its easy to talk and complain.. Its all anyone does.. Does anyone here see the obvious truth and solution? The truth is that every decision in this country, in our states, is made by 500-600 people.. Called Congress… Can the president do anything without their approval? No! Are lobbyists and corporporations responsible? No! Because congressmen/women have to accept their deals!!! So lets put it into perspective…. The state of the economy is the way it is because they WANT the economy down… Think of how wealthy you would become if you could directly influence/crash walstreet?? Give me a break. Everyone just get real and do something instead of crying “something has do be done”…screw the system, stay “unemployed” and dont dare to seek education like Obama encouraged..or u will loose your benefits… States and federal goverments have different ideas regarding that issue.. Can you imagine what would happen to the banking industry if everyone collectively stopped a month payment on their credit cards?! It would be devastating to the corruption… Do you know the bailout, if given to the american people, would have amounted to over 30,000 for every man, woman, and child?? They couldnt succeed outside their schemes… So its no wonder why they want People unemployed and struggling. Easier to control depressed and needy populations… Everyone needs to realize their true power. If you think these issues are severe enough, and your tired of a long train of abuses and crimes done onto the american people then its time to DO something. Stop paying your credit “obligations” and stop letting these criminals make our financial decisions… WAKE UP! Rebellion is leading to revolution.. The fundemental blame is Ours.. People in this country are unwilling to embrace change because personal lifestyles and comfort are all to important for us to sacrifice… Stop talking, stop complaining, and actually start to do something.

I am LIVID. I have sent probably 50 letters to Adam Schiff the local congressman here in Southern California. Like so many I have been unemployed since January 9, 2009. I have searched day in and day out for a job….with no success. Like so many I will miss the deadline for an extension by FIVE days. Luckily my husband works but with 2 children his income is not enough to support us and the unemployment checks were keeping us afloat….but in 2 weeks WE WILL DROWN…I hate to say it but this whole Toyota thing and health care can WAIT! Everyone is worried about the money well one way or another its going to be paid out whether in an unemployment check or a welfare check! I too have been working since 16 NONSTOP and will be 32 in just 8 days Something needs to be DONE ASAP. And KY’s Senator…HOW DARE YOU!

(11) Mary says:

I really do not understand how one Senator can block the whole thing. I only have one question to ask why can we send help to Hati and to Chile and have a war going on in Afganistan but have no money to help the people who are struggling in the United States of America. I did not ask to be on unemployment I have worked since I was 16 and have never collected any unemployment at all I am now in my 50′s can not find a job and if this bill does not pass my unemployment will be cut off I just do not understand how this can happen. I know there are alot of other people that are in the same boat. Lets fight for what is right. Thank god my husband is working but like many other people one income is not enough. I really think that the unemployment issue should be put on the top of the issues that need to be resolved before anything else.

My husband is on unemployment and can’t find work and I am a nurse and can’t find work wither…I am an LPN and they all want to hire RN’s. LPN’s are just as much of a nurse than an RN and we are not respected the same way. If hospitals used LPN’s they would pay less out and not have budget problems…LPNs make approx 18-24 per hours vs RN making 30-36/hr for the same work..go figure. If we don;t find work soon and the unemployment runs out for my husband we will not have food for our 3 year old or be able to pay our bills at all.

Underpaid for most of his career but still one of the first to go
because they don’t plan on getting more work….I am a housewife and always held the fort down when he needed to work 60hour weeks … Now our 1 income family is using all our retirement funds to survive.
No pension to lose savings only making under 1% not
enough to pay for using Cobra benefits if one of us
has to see a doctor and use savings that we our know
living on….Always lived underour means saving for
retirement we our forced now to retire but no funds.
Really makes you want to work harder to end up with nothing….or less than our parents….

I have been on unemployment since Feb. 2009. My benefits under the existing extension ran out last week and I do not qualify for a “new” claim since I’ve had no work in the past year. I’m in AR and our rate is currently at 7% so that means we don’t get the next tier of extension, makes no sense to me. Many people are still jobless and have no income. I’m not sure what all of us who are still unemployed are supposed to do now? My husband is working two jobs from 5 am until 9 pm, we have two small children and we are struggling to pay our rent and utilities and buy food. Now that I’m losing the small amount ($164.00) I used to get each week from unemployment, I have no clue how we are going to manage. I’m feeling very lost in the system. Where is the bailout for the average working class American? Sure all of these disasters are terrible, but what about the tragedies that could happen here once people get desperate to feed and shelter their families? All of these white collar corporate bailouts and handouts make me furious. They don’t deserve it.

I think the way our Congress is treating the American working citizens is cold and none caring. America is nothing like it use to be years ago. They have taking our jobs overseas, they are ripping us of with oil and gas prices. They tell us all kind of stories to get our votes, and while they are living high without want. They put they American people off and say let’s see how long they can hold out! Let some of them start being impeached out of office and let thier funds run out! Then they will do how we feel!

I agree with alot of the people..My fiance who is 60 was laid off after his new boss came on all of the people over 55 were suddenly let go.. Anyone ever hear of age discrimination.. But all of these companies are getting away with it these days.. I went to the mall the other day and do you know I saw a popular skin care company had quit hiring people and put up a mechanical booth to dispense their product.. and yet they cannot hire someone to sell it..What is wrong with these companies today. If we Americans do not start boycotting companies that refuse to hire us and give us jobs why should we purchase their products..and the next time you are tempted to use a self check out line ..remember you might have just cost someone their job. We need to start doing everything we can to make it harder for companies to take our jobs away… NO MORE SELF CHECK OUTS OR MACHINES!!!! Everytime you pay a bill online you take a job away from someone. From the people who work in banks to clearing houses to the plants who make the checks to the postal worker who delivers the mail.. It is the domino effect and we need to stop it now…

One March 1st I overheard some girls in the math class I teach excitedly plan to meet and go shopping that night. I thought, ‘how can they afford to do that?’ Listening further, I found out it was grocery shopping and realized it was the only shopping these teens ever get to do any more. The first of the month is highly anticipated – their parent’s foodstamp card is refilled.

I will soon be joining them, in June I become unemployed – one of several laid-off/non-renewed teachers due to school budget cuts. No jobs around here. If a secondary math teacher can’t find a job, there’s probably very little hope for any teacher.

I have been laid off now for 2 years!! I am an educated woman with a MA degree. Nobody is hiring..and if they are, there’s 500 applicans for one job. They need to create more jobs! I was so excited to hear the benefits may be extended until the end of the year…THEN I foud out that this doesnt include me. Once your 99 weeks are up you are done! Why are the headlines so misleading??? Don’t they know how devasted we already are, and that when we find out the truth it hurts even more?

(24) Cindy says:

Does this extension only cover the higher unemployed states?? 6% and up? What about the rest of the unemployed?? Does this make them less unemployed?? Oh ok… thats ok because your neighbor got a job, and that pays all the bills for the neighborhood. This is rediculous. Treat us equal! This is not fair on any level, where are our congress people to fight for us in South Dakota?

March 11, 2010 at 12:53 pm
(25) HappyTed says:

You want a job more than the extension, but – here’s what I learned about EXTENDING benefits even when the government does not pass another bill.

I got some short term jobs – painting houses and apartments, cleaning up landscaping, etc. The typical job lasted 2-4 days.

I CLAIMED these earnings to unemployment WHILE noting, NO, I did not get another job. I got a short term gig doing this.

I am SIMPLY being HONEST with you about the money I am making while I continue my job search.

What happened to that week’s money? Did it disappear? NO

It moved to the right and added another EXTRA week on the end of my 6 months of unemployment bacause that MONEY is earmarked for me.

Work another 3 day job – add another week to the end of the one week “extension” I gave myself.

By doing this, I extended my 6 months of unemployment to 1.5 YEARS, while continuing to seek a position I wanted.

Best Wishes,

It’s great that they passed the extension, only problem, is that they forgot about a couple million or so people.NICE.The job I had, was an awesome job, loved it, till the owner decided he was going to close the doors, without warning. I worked for this company for the last 10 years. he put 40 people out of work.I have been unemployed for the past 23 months, looking for work every day, have sent out hundreds and hundreds of resumes and still no job, there isn’t anything out here anymore. unless you are a registered nurse, a brain surgeon, computer genius, or have 3-5 years exp. doing whatever job that they do, you’re not getting the job. The problem with today’s jobs is that, the ones that used to pay 10-11 dollars an hour, are now going for 7-7.50, because they know that we need to work, problem is that this little bit of money doesn’t pay the bills. I know there alot of people out there saying,WELL TAKE THE JOB, IT’S A PLACE TO START. not if your going to want to keep your house, or food to eat or if you want to pay any kind of bills. just doesn’t cut it. PEOPLE IN WASHINGTON HAVE TO WAKE UP AND GET THESE JOBS THAT THEY PROMISED US GOING HERE, YOU PUT US IN THIS SITUATION AND YOU BETTER GET US OUT OF IT. I suppose I could live on that little bit of money, IF I had parents to move back in with, god rest their soles. But at 53 years old, even if they were alive, they wouldn’t want me living with them again. All I can say is that, keep your head up, keep applying for jobs and hope that tomorrow will be the day that something good happens. GOD BLESS US AND GOD BLESS AMERICA, because we need all the help we can get.

Jack… I pay 35,000 a year in income taxes for 1099 sub contract work, to Uncle Sam and his elite family in order for the government to do nothing for us? I question your intelligence. In fact, your warped by arbitrary belief. The “american dream” is subjective, and for you to define it is telling of your ignorance… Everyone who is collecting unemployment PAID into it through their employer having to carry it. It’s UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE. So that means everyone here struggling on unemployment are simply getting some of what they PAID INTO. I don’t see anyone asking for a bailout here. People want justice, and are trying to survive out there, and for you Jack, to make a comment like yours, is pathetic, hurtful, unintelligent and just plain wrong. As for me, I lost a high paying job in April 2009 the same day I found out I was going to be a daddy. I couldn’t get another salary position to replace that income. So I went into sales as an independent insurance broker. Now we are living better. Better than before the layoff in 2009.
So I am coming from a position of losing the work, struggling, starting over, falling behind, and then recovering. I had to do it on my own. Did I mention I still manage to donate clothing to Salvation Army, Food to Haiti, and dropped change in the homeless cans spread across Philadelphia, all while Jack was busy here putting down the unemployed calling everyone here babies? The point here JACK (general name I will give to any irratant) is that the government, in which we are funding, is failing it’s job. Stop making excuses for the government. And stop making excuses for yourself by bashing these struggling people…

“better to be thought a fool, than to open your mouth and eliminate the doubt”

Jack, You are one of many Americans who have your head up where it shouldn’t be. The Government has made certain assurancves in return for the money we pay out in Unemployment Insurance and Taxes we pay. Until you have worn the shoes of the greater unemployed, including even the Industrial Technology Professionals who worked hard in school and prepared for the future by investing our futures in it, are also efected by the devistation of the ceonomy. I bet you have a secure job and/or some type of fixed income and have never been screwed by your local Government,, Lost a Job unexpectedly, or had to depend on the weak return on your life’s investment in terms of Income Tax and Unemployment Insurance. Until you have walked a mile in our shoes, do us alll a favor and, if you don;t have an informed contribution to make, STFU!

Enjoy your job while you still have it, because there are 2 to 3 hundred people in your town on unemployment waiting for you to mess it up and take it away from you. To all of the people on unemployment, and to those who have already exhausted their unemployment like mine has, you have to forgive people like jack, because they don’t know what it’s like to walk an inch in our shoes, because if they were in our shoes, they wouldn’t be talking like that. SORRY JACK, you and people like you really need to grow up and take a look around you and see what’s happening to our country, things look really nice through rose colored glasses, until you take them off and see it from the real perspective. The US Senate has broken protocol and obfuscated the efforts of the US House of Representatives to extend Unemployment Benefits. They think as long as they can confuse the majority of Americans, which is one of their favorite tactics, they can save some money on The People.

Let’s take back some of their major pay raises. Do you know how much money they make and how MANY fringe benefits they enjoy? Get furious people! Call your Senators TODAY! Go, go, go! The call takes a minute.

It’s RIDICULOUS that some are saying that collecting a fraction of the money we used to receive through these Unemployment Tiers is promoting people to NOT look for work! SHAME ON YOU!!! You obviously have not had Bill collectors calling you at all hours of the night looking for money you don’t have OR NOTICES being placed on your doors indicating the gas, electric and water will be shut off in 10days! OR looking at your children’s faces as they LOSE any sense of “SECURITY” they once had that everything is going to be alright!!! SHAME ON YOU!!! Those complaining should take a GOOD HARD LOOK at what the repercussions are going to be if this “HELP” we desperately need (WHILE WHOLE HEARTEDLY LOOKING FOR WORK) suddenly stops. If the past has taut us anything is that people will do ANYTHING to take care of there families, sometimes to very extreme measures. WE DID NOT ASK to be laid off AND we cannot help posting and sending dozens of resumes out a day only to receive the occasional “Sorry the position has been filled” or “Sorry we are not accepting anymore applications at this time” The FACT IS the country is in a very serious recession at the moment and although some figures may show a slight “BREAK” in this problem (And I DO MEAN SLIGHT) CUTTING off this “help” now will NOT only make matters worse but cause many to lose EVERYTHING we desperately worked so hard to achieve through years of hard work.

I worked hard for over 20 years in the banking industry and was suddenly laid off in NOV of 2008, I am college educated and submit applications for work EVERY DAY! E V E R Y D A Y ! Making Calls …..Reading the Want ads and submitting online applications but have had no luck in even getting an interview. I even went as far as to apply for a position at a 7/11 but was turned down for a 18/19 year old! WHAT ELSE DO THESE “SCEPTICTS” WANT ME TO DO????????

What needs to be done is a continual 12month LONG TEIR V extension through 2010 WHILE ALSO giving employers serious incentives for hiring the long term unemployed! The help we have received over the past IV Tiers has made all the difference in the world for us and WE THANK YOU but believe us when we say we are doing EVERYTHING POSSIBLE to get back into the work force. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE do not stop it now when this country is on the verge of recovery. RECOVERY …UNFORTUNATELY …..Takes TIME and we NEED HELP!!! ALSO it should be noted that this money we are receiving from unemployment is THE MOST “DIRECT” WAY OF MONEY BEING PUT BACK INTO THE ECONOMY…..GIVING it to the people that desperately need it! Consumer and Commercial Trade will take a SERIOUS NOSE DIVE if these tiers aren’t continued as more and more people can’t make there payments on utilities….food…..and bills….Families will start to break up …..More and more people will become homeless. Who ever decided not to at extend benefits for the long term unemployed for at least another year are being very short sighted and may just run this country right into poverty.

Please I urge everyone in the same situation (looking for work and desperately needing the extended tiers) to contact there local SENATORS and GOVENORS (Contact numbers/websites can be looked up very easily on the internet) and PLEAD with them how desperately its needed for them to extend unemployment benefits for the long term unemployed. Your one letter/phone call/email could very well make the difference. With unemployment running out within the next week or so it can’t be stressed enough that this MUST BE DONE NOW! N O W ! I also urge u to please post this letter for me on any website were comments can be left…..thank you.

People, please stop saying the unemployed aren’t looking for work. It’s simply untrue. 8 California counties have unemployment in excess of 20%–some are almost 28%. California as a whole, has over 12% unemployment. Yesterday, there were in excess of 23,000 additional teachers given pink slips. 4,100 in the San Francisco Bay Area alone, where we live. We were both in education. My husband was a school psychologist. He’s not even allowed to substitute teach, because so many teachers are out of work. One more week of unemployment, then we’re done. No new tiers for us. And the government didn’t pay a cent of our COBRA. We’re packing, getting ready to move, but not sure where. We have lots of pets. Hoping to rent out a 2nd room, and be able to stay in our home.
We still have hope, but lots of people don’t.
To the lady whose frig. is empty, please email me. I will try to help in some way. sparrowpublishing@hotmail.com
I’m not a big believer in leaning on the government, but this is not a recession. This is a depression–which was largely caused by the government’s lack of oversight of the banking industry–so yes, the government does have some responsibility. Pray for those who are going hungry, and donate to a food bank. That’s all I can say.

What is the status of Unemployment extension that was passed in the Senate last week?

I know it is sent back to the House for voting.
How far along has it progressed in the House? When will it get finished in the House so President Obama can sign it??

Listen here JACK…..the city I am in is at 20.8 percent unemployed and the town next to us is at 25 percent unemployed. Factories are closing down, there are no jobs in my city right now. Plus if there is a job it is like 300 people appling for the same job. I was laid off almost a year ago from a job I had for 10 years. We bailed out the car industry and they put me out of a job. With all the applications I have filled out and resume’s I have sent I got two interviews and I was over qualified. Yep over qualified. SO JUST PRAY JACK YOU DON’T GET UNEMPLOYED because it can happen to you. I thought my job was safe I really did. So, don’t ever assume you will not need unemployment either that you are probably one of those politicians that don’t need to worry about there job or you a laying in a load of money. I HATE when someone says go get a job at MCDONALDS… well guess what dude they are NOT HIRING EITHER. They need to pass the extension because we don’t want to be on the street. Our crime rate has sky rocketed in our city. It is getting really bad. I live in Illinois and right now Illinois has the highest unemployed people. I bet Jack has an inheritence and lives on the ocean with his big ole yacht…….Jack wake up and smell the coffee this could be you standing in the unemployment line…..Then who will be saying go find a job…………..

Ok…..what I read here is a complete LACK of knowledge as to WHY we are in this situation!!! The BANKS ??? LOL NO..It is the TOTAL LACK of MFG jobs in the US!!! The past 4 administrations have basically outsourced our entire economy !!!! Between the EPA and these other BS “green” rights groups we are SCREWED for THE FUTURE with NO END IN SITE!!! You want the GOVT to make jobs ???? HOW ABOUT we ELIMINATE ALL FREE BENEFITS FOR ILLEGALS!!! (MEDICAL, SOCIAL, EDUCATION etc) Then we wont have to kick there azz’s out THEY WILL LEAVE!!! WILL THIS HAPPEN??? LOL NEVER…WHY??? Cause the “BIG BUSINESS” feels it has the RIGHT to SLAVE LABOR!!!!!! If the Govt wanted to bring back this economy…it could be pretty simple.

1. any company that RETURNS to the US, hires all AMERICAN (in US) employees, pays ZERO taxes for 5 years.

2. SEAL THE BORDERS!!! Build a 50ft concrete wall ALL THE WAY FROM CALI TO TX!!!!

3. ANY employer that hires an “illegal” pays a 25k fine for EACH employee he hires!!!

ELIMINATE PAY for Senate/House….they should ONLY be there to speak for us !!! NOT for pay!! Lets get in some people who GIVE A DAM!!! Make it a “NON-paying” part time position!!!

I just wanted to urge all of you to call and write your congressional representatives and tell them to approve a 5th tier of UI benefits. I have called mine, as well as Senator Reid, and found it disconcerting to find that very few people have been voicing their concern about the lack of another tier extension. Washington needs to hear from us and that we’re tired of being strung along and they need to be more proactive and sensitive to the realities we are facing on a daily basis. Call and write today!

What is the point of signing a petition trying to get a 5th Tier when there has been zero discussion and no legislation in the works? Well heeled politicians haven’t a clue! No one wants to “live” off unemployment. It barely keeps you afloat. I count the days until I get my check so I can pay most essential bills & then there’s nothing left over. I apply for jobs everyday. If I get one response a month that is a very good month. Unless you’re out here looking, you have no idea how tough this market is with so many highly qualified people looking & add in being over 50 & it’s practically hopeless. Knowing that I have benefits thru the end of 2010 would help ease my daily stress & concentrate on trying to just secure an interview much less a paid position.

(54) shellee says:

Its crazy how they report unemployment rate going down when in reality people are running out of benefits to claim. Of course the report will be less because they are paying to less claimants! Has anyone stopped to think about that? Just because the claim rate is getting lower doesn’t mean people are going back to work, it means they are not able to feed their children or pay the utility bills.

(55) Kimberly says:

I live in Florida and the unemployment is extremely high here. I have been unemployed since May 2008. I have looked everyday for a job, yet still there is nothing. I have only had 3 interviews but I get the same thing all of the time. They have had 300-400 applicants to go through therefore, they will hire the best qualified. The majority of the jobs out there is medical. I have medical terminology and transcription yet I have never worked in the medical field therefore, I do not qualify. I have years of accounting, bookkeeping, secretarial experience yet no degrees. It is so frustrating when you are trying so hard to get a job but yet no one will hire you. I will claim my last check tomorrow, if there is even a check there. A few times now, it has showed me online that I have money there but when I claim it, the computer was not right and then I would have to spend hours trying to call them to get it taken care of. My husband works but he is in the A/C and Heating business but there are times during the year that he may get 20+ hours which does not pay the bills. I am really getting worried because I along with so many others out there could really use an extension that will go through the end of the year. Even though the money you receive is not much it is still better than nothing. For the ones that like Jack who wants to put everyone down, I just hope and pray that you do not end up in the same situation. I do not wish this on anyone. The government really needs to pass this because if they don’t the economy will get worse because more people will lose their homes, cars, electric, etc. and we will not be able to feed our families. Some of us middle class families, do not qualify for assistance from the government like foodstamps, etc. because we may have missed it by $100.00-300.00. You do not qualify for nothing. Yet you people coming to America who do not belong here and they get a job and assistance and they do not even belong here. They are taking it away from us. The government says that they are going to create jobs and in some areas they have but your income has to be in a certain range to even qualify to apply for the position. It is so frustrating and ALL OF UNEMPLOYED AMERICANS MUST STICK TOGETHER AND FIGHT FOR WHAT THE AMERICANS NEED!!!! GOOD LUCK TO ALL OF YOU WHO ARE IN THIS SITUATION! HOPEFULLY TODAY WILL BE YOUR BREAK AND YOU WILL GET THAT CALL THAT YOU GOT THE JOB! KEEP FIGHTING!!!!

I am a single mother. All my children are growned, but because of the job situation, all my children have moved back in with me plus 1 grandchild. Here I am struggling on my unemployment to pay the bills and rent and food for all of us. Their unemployment ran out long ago. Something needs to be done for all of us that has had their benefits depleted. I have a few tiers left and hoping that my company calls me back soon. Cos once my unemployment is gone, there will be nothing coming into the house. I have a friend like “Jack”, she just thinks someone can get a job anywhere, that anything would be helpful. I tried to explain to her that it wasnt as easy as she thought. Of course, she has nothing to worry about cos her husband took early retirement from GM and he gets an $8,000.00 a month pension. Must be nice! The extension from what I read is only the deadline for your tiers, anyone that has exhausted is SOL. They really need to do something to add weeks of unemployment, cos the unemployment rate will go down, but the homeless rates will go up. Take care ev1 and all I guess we can do is hope for the best.

If the House passes it as is, it would add 20 additional weeks to those whose unemployment benefits are about to be exhausted. To confirm this call Sen. Well if they pass a bill extending them what about those that have run out and have nothing? Mine ran out this past week. That’s it. I have no income. I have worked about 20 PT jobs that went no where I have traveled 100 miles to apply for jobs hoping for a call back. I was ready to live in my car and work if I was called. I have 3 daughters, two I pay chils support for and one that lives with me an my wife. I haven’t the rent, money for the utilitys, my child support. My wife works but they cut her hrs to 30 a week. She only makes enought to pay the rent a a car payment and thats it. At the end of this month WE will HAVE to move out and live in our van. I will take any job. I’ve done some that would make the average person puke. Ever try cleaning a Turkey barn? Chicken barn? The goverment needs to pass it for this country to survive. For those that have been able to receive 99 wks of benefits, I am happy for you and hope you will have extensions or better yet find a job. I lost my job in later 2009 and am nearing my first 26 wks of UE. I am being told that at this time I will not get any more extensions, just because of the date I lost my job. I have spoken with state and federal legislation offices, but I still don’t hear anything. I was asked about a notification from UE, they have not sent me anything about my benefits ending. I found out the information because I called to get instruction on getting an extension. The system is broken and maybe the focus needs to be on fixing us – Not sending billions to other countries. Do not allow more people to come to the US, they are getting more benefits that we are and most of them can’t even speak English (which should be our first language). Do not allow companies to manufacture aboard, it should not be cheaper to transport goods across the ocean rather than doing it right here. Most jobs tell us that we need to be able to prioritize, evidently that does not apply to the government.

(61) Jim says:

Watching this whole thing take place has been very interesting… There is alot of stuff to learn from this whole situation, if you sit back and really look at everything.

I remember 10 years ago, EVERYONE was getting Mortgages, All my friends, Everyone i worked with, they were all getting Mortgages for houses that cost anywhere from $150,000 – $300,000. Everyone was trying to convince me to get one because Rent is a waist of Money. Now i pay $250 bucks per month in rent (split with my wife), and my Friends and everyone i knew that got a Mortgage was paying $1000.00-$2500.00 a Month into their Mortgage. They kept trying to convince me that Paying Rent is a Waist of Money because Rent Goes into Nothing.. and that Paying Money into a Mortgage is a great idea because it Builds Home Equity, and creates an Investment that has Value….

But i pay $3000.00 a Year in Rent, and some of those people pay that in Just Intrest and Taxes. And their Loan is actually $300,000 – $500,000 if you add in the Intrest over the next 30 years… It just doesnt seem like a good idea. I told everyone it felt like a “trap”. Being locked into that kind of Monthly Payment really does trap someone into working for the rest of their life… and if anything happens in the Economy, or anything happens with their job, or Any Expenses happen, such as a child, or an Injury… their fucked… It just seemed like too much of a Risk to own a house… And thats not counting House Insurance. Car insureance. Food, Phone, Electric, Cell Phones, and then all the Credit Card and Loan Debt to buy all the appliances for the House… and all the stuff that goes into an empty house…

Right now i still live at the Same place. I still pay $250 bucks a month in Rent.. and 50-75% of the People i know that bought a Mortgage have now lost their Home.. have their Cars and Trucks Repoed. Are going thru Forclosures, and going Bankrupt.

My suggestion to people is to keep your monthly Expenses at around 20% of your Income. Instead of Matching your Expenses to your Income.. and playing the “Risk” that everyone plays.

If you can Find yourself a Cheap Moble home, and Buy a used Car.. Get a Garden and Grow Food, Stop getting 5 Cell Phones, stop getting the 10-15 Meg DSL… Stop Buying stuff on Credit and Loans… and Instead buy stuff with what you have, or save up to buy it … Stop Eating out… Eating out is a big Money Nuke… You can go to Subway and spend 15 bucks on Two people for 1 Meal.. or u can go to the Store and spend 15 bucks on enough food for 2 people to last a week… Stop getting Java and Coffee in the Morning… Stop going to the Vending Machine… stop Nuking all of your Money…..

If you can get all your Expenses down to 20% of your Income.. and tuck the rest away.. or create Investments with the Rest… you can really get out of your trap.

I happen to agree with Jim. My wife and I made over 120K a year and have made that amount for over 20 years. After taxes, we took home appx 88K. I was terminated from my employer almost 2 years ago and now my income has decreased by 75K a year, so as you can see I have taken a huge hit in income. I read the posts here and I have to wonder what you people spend your money on. My wife and I raised 3 children and were able to do this on 20K a year hard money spent (IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA!). I have invested in the market, CD’s and money market accounts and I have a very sizable “nest egg”. Being that my wife and I have got our children out of the house, we are now able to live on 12K a year. And YES, this is all of our bills (food, elect, insurance, gas, trash, taxes). Why can we live on 12K a year and it seems nobody else can. Quit going out to dinner, buying clothing at retail stores, shop in major grocery stores, drive your car without a weekly plan to cut down on millage, ECT. When my wife and I go walking (every day), we take a trash bag and pick up cans for even more money. Just imagine, working out and making money at the same time. Shopping at stores that have dented cans, thrift stores for clothing and just going to the park for entertainment is not really that hard to do. I do have one wasteful spending habit, I decided because we have crappy TV reception, I did purchase a basic non fiber optic cable subscription for 14.00 a month. I had to splurge somewhere.

I do feel bad about the situation so many Americans are in , however, if our looked for ways to cut your living expenses, your money problems would be much less severe.

I have been unemployed since November of 2008 … I have worked in Information Technology for 21 years and have not been called back on jobs that were paying 15 dollars an hour. I have applied for Part Time positions, jobs that pay 1/4 of what I have made for the same position/job description – whatever I can … I really need a job. I send resumes everyday to at least 3 companies, have updated and stayed on my networking as well as relationships with people in my field and former fellow employees and managers. I have several different resumes for different vocation focus – I have worked full time since I was 17 years old (34 years) … I have not received a call back on a resume or inquiry for almost four months. I am in school to reinvent myself and am grateful that school has given me some purpose – if anyone attempts to call me lazy or that I’m enjoying the time off … well, don’t – because I’m not. I just want to get back to work and try to climb out of this financial disaster that I’m in … I need the opportunity for extended benefits. It seems that an experienced 51 year old dependable employee seems like a risk. I’m in great health and try to keep a good attitude. I am eligible for Extended Benefits in California ( I will be done with the 4th tier on Saturday – 3/27) – this is a rough position to be in – and I am no way a unique story …

To the man with a large retirement nestegg who picks up cans. You should be ashamed of yourself! Leave those cans for somebody with no money. What a hog.
Also to the post about unemployed black men. That is a fact and a sad one about the high unemployment rate for black males. All I can say is people should not spend their money at places that don’t hire people like them. If you go in a restaurant or store and don’t see people like yourself, put your money back in your pocket and go somewhere else.(assuming you have any to spend which I don’t at the moment.) In this economy, it will put some of those racist businesses out of business. I have just gotten a job, thank goodness. Don’t give up. After two years of unemployment and hundreds of no responses, one hired and let go after three days and lots of pointless interviews, I finally got hired. Keep persisting or up and move, whatever you can do. Sometimes you have to wait and just pray. Be patient.

I am a single parent of one. I lost my job back in April of 2009 after working as a paralegal for a huge law office in my city. I was lucky enough to find a part time job, allowing me to stretch out my unemployment benefits a little longer. I have applied to hundreds of business with little luck….I have went to other cities, in other states, dropping off my resumes. I am willing to pack up and leave everything and everyone I know, if that means being able to provide for my child. I made 20 an hour at my last job and I have now been forced to take the only job I can find, making 7.35 an hour. All of the factories are laying off and closing up shop to move out of the country. Living in a college town/city, summer is soon approaching….not only will I be competing with people my age, I will also be competing with kids almost half my age and college graduates for a job. Who do you think McDonald’s is going to hire “Jack”….an over-qualified paralegal, or joe blow from the local high school? Who will they have to pay less to satisfy? I have worked hard since I was 15. I worked my way through college working 60 hours a week, while having a full time college schedule. I worked 3 jobs up until I was 8 months pregnant with my son. Never in my life have I had to collect unemployment benefits!!! (Jack) Your ignorance towards what is really happening in this country makes me feel sorry for you. God forbid you ever end up in any of our shoes. The person who said that there are 100 people in your city just waiting for you to screw up so they can take your job, isn’t lying!!!! Not only are they ready to take your job….they are willing to do it for a lot less money I’m sure.

This unemployment issue has gotten so out of hand, how can they stop paying people unemployment with the economy in the can, I am told that if I did not exhaust my unemployment by April 3, I can not get an extension. But I can’t just up and exhaust it, It’s not like they are going to let us draw what we have left to get to the next tier. Unless the government is planning on paying my rent and utilities or I would settle for them giving me a real job, what are myself and others suppose to do. These companies run ads and offer employment, when they are not really hiring, they are just filling their data base so it will look like they are hiring on paper and in the event that the economy pick back they will blow people phones and emails off the hook trying to get a hold of them. But we need jobs now and no one is willing to hire you or even train you for any position. Now I know we all need healthcare, but right now if we don’t have jobs how can we pay for healthcare. This seems to defeat the purpose. ” Jobs First, Then Healthcare.

Rather than blaming one candidate, or past candidates, lets just say they have all created more problems than they’ve solved. The reasons are incredibly complex. I doubt that there is anyone that has a clear understanding of how to fix the declining economy. If you want evidense of this, just surf and listen to both educated and ignorant people express their opinions and they all conflict on what is the right thing to do and who is at fault. I feel educated and couldn’t give you definitive truth on what the “problem” is. Despite that, I do have an opinion about what to do, and here it is.
First of all, the countries priority is it’s people, not foreign affairs, world economic development, protecting other struggling economies, and other nations woes. If this seems irresponsible look at it in a smaller scale. Would you put your family at risk for the benefit of another family? This does not indicate that you are selfish, it just means you are aware of your priorities.
My second point is, money has not evaporated. Resources have not evaporated, people willing to work have not evaporated. Money has merely shifted hands. Whether it is shifted overseas, or into unethical corporate hands, or wasteful government practices, downright greed and corruption, it has merely shifted hands. Resources have been curtailed by fears, whether real or imagined, limiting production. Willing workers have payed the bill for the other two.
Point three, What needs to be done? Private enterprise needs to take over bloated government programs, they always do it better and cheaper than the government can. Who better to do this than the current unemployed? Is it possible for the unemployed to group together and form businesses that are paid by those who the money has shifted hands into? Those who are making money on the backs of others should provide income to those of us who they put out of business. We have deteriorating infrastructure that private enterprise could handle and elimiinate the need for federal and state subsidized programs. The more projects the government handles, the greater our taxes become. So put the government out of the business of doing what private enterprise can do better.
Many posts here have suggested voting people out of office, let encumbents live on their savings for a while so that new ideas, and fewer “career politicians” can show that they can do better.
Other countries, those in particular that we have assisted in some fashion in the past, and currently, are complaining about America and it’s lifestyle, well, have them pay us back. Let’s look at who owes whom around the world and then see how the books balance.
How about refusing to let laws be put into effect until the public has a chance to review them. That was a politcal promise that has just disappeared. Remember “transparency”?
Whatever happened to line item veto and term limits? They sound good about now don’t they?
The real key here is that the government isn’t going to be the solution, despite all of our good work and faith in the system, and governmental promises made and broken, the bottom line is that the people will make the difference. Group together. Those who have years of experience under their belts should get organized and form better corporate organizations, and outperform what is out there. There is enough talent amongst the unemployed to organize something better than what exists out there.
Those who are struggling right now are perhaps forgetting that time will not heal this wound. extended benefits would be wonderful, but you will spend the money on necessities, industries that are not in as much danger of collapse as all the others. It is a viscious downward spiral, fewer jobs, less spending, less demand, less investing by companies, fewer jobs etc. The unemployed need to form companies, new ones that outshine what is not working. This is not a job for the faint of heart, or those that are fearful of the risk involved in growth in the midst of crisis, but again, are you going to wait for the government to figure it out? I’m afraid. I am unemployed, my wife is unemployed, I don’t get any unemployment because I worked for a non-profit organization, my wife’s unemployment runs out at the end of March too. We are living in an apartment after carefully building equity and savings for all our working lives, and will soon be living off of what we’ve have worked so hard to save, and we are recently married after being divorced after twenty year marriages. We are at the bottom too. I do not have faith that this is a place someone else is going to get me out of. I am so sorry for those of you who are single and supporting children. For those dissappointed masses that have been lead to believe that you would be able to retire and instead will have to eek out a living for the foreseeable future. There is so much ability and willingness to work out there, surely these can be coelsced into a dynamic workforce that thrives in adversity. I suppose that I must now put myself in the position of following through on this idea, since it is mine. It is difficult, and I am fearful, but I haven’t heard other options that will come to my rescue anytime soon. Good luck to all of you out there.

Hello I can completely sympothize with everyone whom has posted on this link. However, At least you all still have a roof over yu head. MY benefits ran on second tier of federal unemployment, Ive now bee n on streets for past 6 weeks, which hopefully the rest of you will never land. I am awaiting for my state to release the moneys promised but keep getting told that due to state budget woes, they have to get more funds dispursed due to large number of people unemployed. The Government doesn’t care since they still have automatic paycheck. They are more worried about havingot finally take money outofthier own pockets to take care of the people that put them in power ot screw us all over anyway.

AGAIN, I can not understand what you people do with your money. Like I posted eairler, my wife and I up until less than 2 years ago brought home appx 88K per year after taxes. Now, I bring home appx 55K per year with my unemploymnet. That drop in income hurts very much because I now only invest 45K instead of 75K per year. This will cost me well over 400K in possible investment income over the next 20 years. This really bothers me and my family. With 3 children, my monthly expences were 1700 per month for EVERYTHING. People in this country waste so much money on things they feel they are intitled to, but can not afford! Because of this, you are in the situation you are in now. I hate to say this, but my wife and I have SAVED over 1.4 million and with interest and investment returns, we are worth over 4 million. YET we still live on 1000 dollars a month and pick up cans for even extra money on our daily walks! It really bothers me when families all across this great country are having so many financial problems due to the horrible economy. With that being said, I truly believe if you look at the way your family has wasted money over the years, you may finally have learned a valuable lesson. Our finacial institutions would have so much more cash and this crash may never had happened if instead of buying a new boat, you saved that money, or the monthly payment for that boat, in a savings account. Then, looked for an investment to make your money grow instead of wasting it. If everyone did this, the banks would have had more money and therefore could have been in a better position to weather the home loan mess. Start shopping at thrift stores, damaged food outlets, clip coupons, continue to drive your 25 year old car, plan your trips and get all your items needed for your family in one trip per week. It is not hard to do and once you get used to it, it is really fun to watch your bank account grow. I am getting close to not worring about my cash position soon. YES, I have lost a fair amount of money in the stock market, however, the gains far outweigh the losses. Well, it is time to go on my walk with my wife. I just hope there are many cans to be picked up. That way, I can continue to save for my grandchildrens future.

Best wishes to everyone. I sincerely hope this mess is over soon. I also hope Obama doesnt raise taxes as we can’t afford to pay more than we are paying now.

Jimbo not many of us have been fortunate enough to make 120K for 20 years and bring home 88K and invest a good portion of that. The 20K you are living on is all a lot of people are making before taxes are deducted. The 55K you are now making…most would be just fine with. And it is very arrogant of you to assume that people are wasting their money. Most people are just trying to survive and only make enough to survive. I don’t know what city you live in, but I am single and live in a Chicago suburb and my unemployment only covers the essential bills, and that does not include food, gas for my car, toilet paper, soap etc. Thank God I did have some savings and I can supplement with that, but that is dwindling away. I have no health insurance because I can’t afford the premiums. Thanks to the greed of people during the housing boom, I was wiped out financially because an “investor” decided to flip a house and replace mold infested walls with new walls without cleaning up the mold problem, so I had to cash in my investments and retirement to pay attorneys to fight to get out of the deal, thank God I won. But I have not recovered it and on top of that I loose, not one but two jobs in the four years that followed due to the demise of both companies. So before you make the assumption that we have put ourselves in this situation check yourself. And since you sitting on 1.4 Mil, why don’t you give up your unemployment benefits to someone who really needs them. Until I’m in dire need of something I’m going to leave it for those that really need it. And what’s the point of having all that money if you not going to live a good quality of life, not saying extravagant, but I would hard every day and I’m going to enjoy the fruits of my labor. And one more thing, the economy is not bad because the people didn’t live thrifty, it’s bad because wall street and bankers got GREEDY!

I aggree that we a long term extension passed as there are still alot of people who are unempolyed. It would help those who are still looking for jobs, continue to get paid as the job market is a employer base field insted of an employee base field. Employer’s can be more picky on who they as for every (1) job currently open there are over a (100)people competing for the same job. Till the Job market improves, the job seeker will need the extra extensions to bet by.

I have been unemployed since September of 2008. This past year and a half has been pure hell. It infuriates me that there might be another extension, but it doesn’t cover people who have been unemployed long term. That’s only going to create more problems because there are a lot of people whose unemployment will run out and they won’t have hardly if any income. It’s pretty much going to be the same situation it is now. If they are going to extend benefits through the end of the year, it should be for everyone. Living life on unemployment benefits is not living, it’s existing. I can’t even make ends meet on this little bitty bit I’m getting. I’ve sent out countless resumes and have only been on a handful of interviews. I’m either over qualified or get lost in the sea of all the other applicants. The point is, there are too little jobs for too many people. We (the unemployed) don’t want to not work and collect unemployment, we want to work and have jobs to go to. Being in a situation like this robs you of your confidence and self esteem. The senators don’t know what it’s like because they have jobs and make a decent income. Let them be in our situation and have to worry about how they are going to keep a roof of their heads and then see what they say. We have millions to send to Haiti, but we can’t help out our own people? This is ridiculous!

I’ve been laid off since DEC.22 2008. I am a certified Millwright and Pipefitter. I’m 39 yrs old. I basically work on/build/repair power plants and their precision machinery.
I usually make anywhere from $22 to $35 an hour and I get per diem of generally $80 a day to pay for my gas and hotel or rent due to the fact that I work all over the united states and almost never within 10 hours of my home.
as far as people on unemployment NOT LOOKING FOR JOBS?? I got called in by the Unemployment office to show my work searchs and contacts or they werent going to pay my Benefits anymore.
I took them Detailed records of faxes, phone records, emails.(all with excat times and dates plus phone numbers and contact person info) and then I showed the auditor my gas records and in person interviews.
I spent over 60% of my benefits from january 09 to october 09 just in driving to job sites all over the US for interviews and just waiting at the gate to talk to a HR person to let them know im here and willing to work TODAY, and trying to get rehired. PLUS TOOK a welder and a crane operator with me on some searches trying to help my friends get re employed
They said they had never seen such detailed job search records in their 15 yr careear and released my benefits back to me.
The Jobs AINT out there!! I even tried to take positions as a helper for half the pay and half the perdiem and couldnt get hired.
All the companies that I have worked for in the past are laying off from 700 to 3000 people each. I call them all at least 3 times a month and do at least 4 or more job searches a week.
The jobs AINT out there!!
The companies all tell me “as soon as something breaks loose we will call you, your on the top of our list and extremely experienced but were laying off, not hiring at this time).
And some of the companies are taking advantage of this situation and dropping pay rates by 40% and all but killing per diem.
Because I did make excellent money in the past I had my bills paid ahead and a little saved.
I have worked smart and hard most of my life, but I’m now having to start looking at food stamps.
My Benefits are now exhausted (as of 2 weeks ago).

They cant take my vehicles cause their paid for.
But MY HOUSE has a bank note every Month.
Propery taxes, home owners insurance.
Still gotta pay my child support.
Might want lights and water too.
Im growing a garden but that cant feed me till fall harvest.
My state does not recognize sustenance hunting.
Might need insurance to drive my vehicle to get and look for a job, that takes gas.

SO as far as the ignorant comment that people on unemployment are NOT LOOKING for jobs.. Well your full of yourself and the drippings from the south end of a bull.
Why would someone want to be on unemployment!??
I know personally alot of good folks that are honest and very hard working that are unemployed due to lay offs and companies just up n leaving.
AND THEN someone has to go and indirectly call us lazy (or we waste our money!) {like a 8yr old in a candy store} because were on unemployment and needing a helping hand from the Government thats supposed to do just that when we really are in a time of need.

Its a long long fall from that high horse your on, hope you find a steamy pile below to break your fall.. face first!.

I reviewed the prior 83 e-mails regarding unemployment and the agony we all face. I really can’t say much more than what has already been covered in these 83 e-mails except for one question…….what are we going to do about officials WE (the voters) placed in office? While most elected officials are concerned about unemployent it appears that too many of them are only concerned about their own careers…which means getting re-elected! Looks like WE put the wrong people in office. It is now time for the American voter to get involved, understand the issues we face before voting the wrong candidate in office, know where candidates stand on the issues, research each candidates background and voting record….just get involved! Go beyond listening to mindless ad campaigns on TV and biased media reports. Too many voters don’t make the effort and then complain about the senate and congress being impotent. Just remember WE put these bums in office! Now it’s time to let Washington know WE are not going to tolerate the childish games played in DC while WE the voters suffer the pain of unemployment and lack of affordable health care. This nation can accomplish great things when WE the voters stand up to be heard. It is time for us to march, in great numbers, on our state and federal capitals as a warning to our elected officials that WE the voters will remove them from office and replace them with competent officials who are acting in good faith for the voters they represent.

(93) JW & BJH says:

My Girlfriend & I are unfortunately both unemployed. Not that it matters but for the record we both worked our entire adult lives and then some. I am 43 and have worked since I was 12 years old, most recently I was fired in which the Mich Unemployment agency determined was wrongful. The employer whom I worked fulltime for nearly 10years claimed theft or more specifically embezzlement; however when the 2 individual whom were present, the HR director who did the talking along with another high ranking mgmt official last May 18th,2009 these gutless worms didn’t have the balls (excuse my language)to look me in the eye and confront me on what turned out to be base allegations made up some lame reason that I was being terminated for exchanging what they deemed “innapropriate emails” with my now girlfriend whom at the time was performing legitmate contract work for the company; furthermore dispite that not being the reason out emails were not sexual in anyway, we had met outside the workplace long before any of this occured through an online-dating site. She was one of many individuals whom performed various forms of contracted work, in most cases it was part-time work to supplement exsisting income. I knew that was NOT the reason. The following day I was contacted by a rather arrogant police detective from the local township PD. He instructed me I needed to come down to the station immediately. Little did I know at the time I was NOT obligated to submit to his request, nor answer any of his questions; however praying on the fact of my recent termination knowing I may be volunerable I agreed. In most situation it would of been an ill-advised thing to do, especially without an attorney. As it turned out that particular action may of well been what derailed any potential criminal charges from being filed. During this interrogation he made outragoius accusations that I embezzled this insane amount he arbritrarily came to of $35,832(I’ll never forget this amount and wondered how he came up with it) I kind of know how he did, but it was clear he had NO idea what he was getting into. In an attempt to finish this very lengthy story what this centered around was payments made to a group of individuals within my budget whom performed as forementioned legitimate contract work to support the very short-staffed department I oversaw. I will admit to using poor-judgement. Within this group of independent contractors (meaning the are NOT employees of the company) was my gf, a past gf, a couple friends; however one thing that was rampent throughout the company was instances of husbands, wives, children, & friends being used in this very same manner by other department heads, managers, etc.. in fact what i did was NOT against company policy, company stated that no immediate family members were to be given work within a department where the spouse, parent, whomever worked. The forementioned folks in my case were NOT immediate family. The one individual whom seemed to get the most focus (my girlfriend) whom at the time as far as a relationship was in the process of developing. Now we are close to engaged as I am soon to pop the question set a tenative date in July 2011- her 30th bday as her main fear for years was she would not be married when she turned 30. Moving along- in the meeting with this detective he revealed theories that he believed a conspiracy existed between this group of 1/2 dozen individuals performing the contract work and being paid I will admit on generous side, but not anything very far outside the “box”; furthermore since much of this work consisted of use of ones own vehicle and gas, with gas peaking well over $4 a gallon during much of the period being investigated, it turns out the payments weren’t very generous at all. Bottom line was there was NO conspiracy whatsoever, most of the individuals did not know each other. His other hypothesis which was even farther off the mark was I paying money to women in exchange for sex. Well if that was the case officer-I was cheated. The meeting ended with him threatening to “take me down”. I concluded with saying I would make no future statements without an attorney. The other very poor judgement I used, that I’ll admit likely prompted much of the suspicion. I had cashed some of the checks written to the girls and to a couple of the friends with their permission and that I’ll admit was unwise and to someone from the outside “shady” at the least. For the record again. I didnt profit a dime, and all work was performed legimately with better effort then what one would likely get with someone off the street. Its a main reason the nepatism was permitted throughout the company. Following my ordeal I contacted my attorney who told me I should never of gone there, but what it did was allow me to speak with the other individuals and let them know this detective would be contacting them, he was going to put words in your mouth, most importantantly no one was in anyway obligated to talk to this man unless were are subpeaned by the court. A couple days after he questioned me he began contacting my girlfriend and haraasing her, scaring her, she had NO knowledge of the non-sense he was pushing, did everything and more asked of her. After she told him to leave her alone, he continued until my attorney contacted him and told him he needed to stop NOW or harassment charges could be filed. He stopped but went on to the others who basically told him to “take a hike”. What likely happened as my attorney explained having been a former prosecuter, he went with what he had to the prosecuter and was told he had “nothing”. In order for this to go forward he would have to prove conspiracy and he was light years off on that one and farther on the other one or would have to get one of the individuals say I cashed their check and took their money. Since that didnt happen either he had nothing. Of course while this was unfolding it was a rather difficult period in my life as we all know and I surely know police can twist facts-his hope was to scare someone like my Gf get her to testify. I knew they didnt have enough to prove much of anything, since nothing much ever happened; however i was worried because even with their permission its still not legal I shouldnt of cashed the checks and it possible they could of got something on that. Not enough to go to jail, but have a record, mayb probation, ect.. Despite all this I didnt bother filing for unemployment for a while as I thought I didn’t have a snowballs chance in hell of collecting. Being denied unemployment and being convicted of a crime are 2 different things. Ive seen many people deneid unemployment for much less. In conclusion as I was getting my mind clear and after I heard reports this detective left in major frustration when he showed up at one of the forementioned contractors dayjob and was told to leave immediately and dont come back without a subpeana despite pleaded with this individual that he was his last hope to “get this guy” or he might be passed over for promotion (If that cop really said that i wasnt there-thats what I was told)thats awful. I made some mistakes as we all do, but im a generally a good honest person. When you think of childmolesters out there or real criminals and this jerk is hell bent on getting me. Anyway..I apologize for going on it still upsets me. It was now August, and with savings running low even though I still didnt think I had a chance to collect unemployment I filed figuring i had nothing to lose. Without having to fight with 3 weeks of filing my case was decided in my favor; furthermore as mentioned the company foolishly flat out told unemployment I was terminated for theft- it said so right on the determination sheet. As I mentioned they (the company reps)never accused me at anytime and told me I was being terminated for exchanging “inapproapriate emails” they even had the email they were considering where they took a personal exchange from my inbox where the dirtiest thing I said was how much I loved her or some other personal exchanges between a man and a woman in a blossoming relationship..not very damning. Now I am being urged to start a suit for wrongful discharge. I am not a “sue happy” person but Im thinking about it. I do have unemployment backing me up saying in their determination having found no evidence of wrongdoing on my part. I intially came on here to ask about what is going on with these extensions. Have to come to that. Thank you for taking the time to read this lengthy correspondence. Unemployed male 42 and female companion 28 in suburban Detroit Mi

Senator Bunning needs to be removed form office and someone else who ACTUALLY CARES for people and not himself should be designated. I Have been unemployed for over a year now, and cannot find ANYTHING! I have looked. I have been working the online field for the last few months because I have exhausted my options for employment anywhere around me. Please, someone in Congress help us all! I have child support to pay, and I dont’ want to be another statistic in jail because I cannot afford to pay it! I have too much to lose in my life! I have two kids that I regularly get to talk to and visit, and I would hate to miss that. I just got it set up to where I can see them again!

My life is a nightmare. I was making 80K until I was laid off. I have two masters degrees and am over qualified for everything. Now there is no tier 5 or 6. I can’t live with rats and roaches. Right now that is the only option for me. I never thought I would be wallowing in a filthy neighborhood with drugs, violence, murders everyday.

I am in Chicago Il and this place is a hell hole. The people on the South side live to murder each other. I feel like I am in a 3rd world country. There needs to be a 5th and 6th tier until the economy is better.

I have never encountered so much hate in all mu life. I am currently poor and it is not pleasant. I don’t have any kids which mean I do not qualify for anything. My student loans are in default. I have been criminalize because of poverty. Is life worth living?

The politicians need to understand that they were voted in by the people and will be VOTED out by the people. If this is what Politics is all about maybe we need to really find an alternative!

long term unemployed are getting screwed bigtime, I worked at my last job for 10 years, until It went out of business 2 years ago. I have 30 years of delivery driving exp. Have taken care of disabled wife and others that have had disabilities for 15 years. I have sent out more than 550 resumes in the last year, and NOTHING. this is the typical response i’ve been getting lately, Your resume is impressive, but, were going in a different direction, thanks for applying. I have applied for numerous part time positions, and they won’t even get back to me. I’m 53 years old and that is most of the problem, I believe. got turned down for a part time delivery driving job, delivering newspapers 3 to 4 hours a day. WHAT, have my own van , 30 years of exp., and no response from them. Probably my age again. And 2 weeks ago, I applied to a disability rehabilitation center, today they e-mailed me to let me know that again, your resume is impressive BUT, they are going with someone who has worked in the past year, has taken care of disabled people, and can care for their needs. WTF, did these people even look at my resume, 15 years isn’t enough exp. for them. NOPE, again, probably my age and I haven’t worked in the past year. MY GOD PEOPLE WAKE THE HELL UP. washington needs to extend ALL unemployment till this country wakes the hell up and decides to hire us long term unemployed. Thanks for letting me vent, TIER V, TIER VI, TIER VII, whatever it takes till that the people of the united states are back working again. I used to be proud to have the flag outside of my house, now, I think it’s time to put up my mickey mouse flag, because that’s what washington is anymore, mickey mouse a-holes.

I am confused. I called the Unemployment Office(I live in MA) 2 weeks ago and was told I had 2 more checks on EUC08 and then I would go on EB for 20 wks (I have collected for 79 weeks so far). So, I called them friday because I wanted to check on how to submit the EB jobsearch worksheat online, which their
website says must be done every week on EB. The person I spoke with told me I had no benefits left. I explained what I had been told 2 weeks ago and that I had used 79 weeks and should be able to go to 99 weeks. She took all my info like I was opening a new claim and said she’d call me next week. I asked if I should do anything-like submit the jobsearch worksheet and she said no not unless they tell me to in a letter-even though online it says this MUST be done weekly to get EB. Then she said that I keep telecerting every week like normal. Is there anyone else who has gone on this extension after exhausting
EUC 08? If so, did you have problems? I am wondering if this lady knew what she was doing?, since she at first told no I had no weeks left. I understand that for some people on EUC08 that is the case, but that is because they’ve already used up EB benefits and collected total of 99 weeks. As previously said, I have collected 79(and my state goes to 99). I am thinking I shouldn’t wait for her to call me back and just call again this week?

Worries like you never thought you’d have. And don’t expect anyone to help you, when you go to social services. You’ll spend hours on the phone following prompts that lead you nowhere. We’re hanging on by a thread, when last week we’re informed due to budget cuts we get 8% less. Who can live on $500 a month, and they take 8% away. We’re at the end of our rope. You literally have to be homeless, on a curb with a sign ’round your neck. What has happened when people can’t make an honest fair wage. Family will help if they can but they want you to tell them how much . And they take it back next month. We need an economy thats realistic. Jobs that enables us to pay bills and have a quality of life. I can’t imagine how I will buy shoes when these are worn out. What has to happen?

At least I know the money will come eventually, but it’s not going to be fun explaining that to the electric company, and the phone company. I live in MA by the way.

If you check out the link above that I posted earlier, it looks to me like Obama signed into law an extension of benefits for the long term unemployed at least until June 2nd which would be retroactive back to when the benefits stopped. It also looks to me like they are also trying to put together a package that would help us til the end of the year because politicians are worried about such high unemployment during an election year. Unless I’m reading it wrong, we should see some relief soon. The economic situation did not come about in one year. The people that lost their jobs are not to blame for the economy, but are paying the highest price. We who go to the stores and feed the economy by making daily purchases will no longer be able to do so. Without this foundation our economy can’t recover. Making sure that the average person can buy clothes, food, gas, and pay their bills would only help the recovery process. Giving big bailouts to banks, and big business is not the way to build a stron foundation. Without this foundation our economy will become weaker. We must build from the bottom up. There are over 30 million unemployed americans spending their money every day and without a tier 5 extension will no longer be able to put their part into the economy. Can we really afford to go backwards, and think that by not adding a tier 5 it will make thing better?

I think it’s sick, how they play with the unemployment numbers to benefit their agendas and make themselves look as if they are doing something. We are expected to go away. However, this is not Obamas doing at all, but Bush. But Congress must remember, we will wake up come election time. You reap what you sow. In the meantime, let’s all pray for one another and keep the pressure on for Tier 5 and 6. In the meantime, GOD BLESS us all. Remind Congress – we will have the last laugh.

My wife has not been able to find a job since late 2008 Her benies ran out in April 2010. Even thought they added a tier the unemployment rate in Arkansas has been below 8.5% so she did not qualify for the added tier. We live in Texas where the rate is above 8.5% but they use the rate from the state the claim is from. Her is my question and suggestion. I am not sure exactly how the unemployment rate is calculated for each state, when they mention it on the news they say jobless claims which leads me to belive that it is based on the number of people collecting unemployment benefits. If that is the case, when you run out of benies, how many people stop calling in and reporting? If they continue to call and report but dont receive benies, are they still counted? If they sare still counted, I am asking everyone everywhere to cintinue to call in an report even if you are not getting benefits. If everyone is not calling, or being counted that means the rates are not accurate and as we say late this week, the unemployment numbers can have a big impact on our economy and should. Everyone please continue to call and/or find a way to be counted and some of those states whose rates are inaccurate may be able to get a tier added.

Jack, shouldnt you be working or at work instead of wasting your time demeaning people on the internet. Or did you take time out of your busy work schedule to provide us with that little gem. If you are doing this in your spare time at home, shouldn’t you be spending time with your wife and kids. I am betting with a judgemental, degrading mentality like that they probably all left you long ago. So unfortunately for us, that leaves you plenty of spare time to use all of those “positive, supportive traits” that you used to use on your former family on this message board. If you are doing this from work, wasting company time, it will only be a matter of time before someone who will actually spend their time doing their job, will take your job.

Mabey you and Jack can get togther and start a side business to help peole find jobs and then teach them how to invest, and when they get a bunch of money saved up, give them a list of message boards on the internet that they can go to and brag about how much money they have and judge other people and how they spend their money. You can call your business, Jack and JImbo’s unsolicited advice, I really think you are on to something here. That is exactly what people looking for answers and assistance with their problems need, unsolicited judgemental advice that is in no way constructive or beneficial to anyone. You should be able to make several more million dollars with this new business venture, wow, imagine how happy your great grandchildren are going to be spending your millions. And the best part is, you wont have to bend over and pick up anymore cans, you can leave them on the side of the road for all of us poor people.

Basically I feel there is only three positive options people on unemployment can do everyday right now.

1. Goes without saying but apply to as many job positions online and off as possible. Use Linkedin.com to network, go to networking meetings in your local city, hire a professional resume/cover letter writer to help your resume/cover letter stick out from the masses.

2. Be creative…try starting your own internet or home based business yourself or with a group of people. Guess who the best boss is…YOU!

3. Use this poweful list below and email, call, fax, mail, Twitter, Facebook all these people daily. Then do the same thing for your state senators, governor, mayor, congressman and city council members.

In the ancient Roman days, do you know what was the most powerful force? Not the Emperor or the Senate, it was the MOB!

We are the mob, we need to passionately group together and rage like a mob ethically and politically to the powers that be.

Our Benefits have been yanked by the Republicans because they didn’t get what they wanted for their Multinationals and Hedge Fund Managers (To not be Taxed) .

Article Below:

And although many, like Nobel Prize-winning economist Paul Krugman, have warned that now, when several economic indicators are looking promising, is not the time to stop assisting the unemployed many of whom are simply trying to maintain the households and their lives until they can find gainful employment, it may have reached that point. With a solid-bloc “no” vote from the Republicans on each vote, and the Democrats unwilling to pass a Republican-sponsored measure that would not tax multinationals and hedge fund managers, the American Jobs and Tax Loopholes Closing Act of 2010, with its provision of unemployment benefits extension, may never be passed.

And if pulled, it may never be resuscitated.

Move. and the bank is left with the bill. My credit is ruined for many years to come and my intrest goes sky high. What do I do? I to have a wife, and kid, im 27. I would have to move back to my parents garage apartment and let the banks get ANOTHER debt relief plan? I dont see how it’s ok to help them instead of helping us… THE SOURCE.
I dont know what to do anymore beyond this. Anyone know how long I would mess my credit up by defaulting like many people are starting to do? Im out of options. I barely made it with this income and now I have non. at all.

it’s sad to say i am from KY. McConnell is an embarrassment to this state. I too wish he would fall off the face of the earth. He needs a reality check as well as all of these Senators who keep voting down the extension. Take away their nice salaries and let them make an hourly wage of no more than $20 an hour as well as pay for their own health insurance. Bet things would get fixed quick as well as help the deficit. McConnell is an idiot. A while back KY had the opportunity for another distillery to be built which would have created more jobs but the distillery did not come here because they felt like the taxes were too high. Was it going to hurt giving a tax break when more jobs would be provided? Also, Gov Beshear(dem) has been wanting to bring in casinos to KY instead of having people who like casinos go and give their money to IN. McConnell doesn’t want casinos because it’s gambling. Does he really think that people go to the racetrack just to see the pretty horses??? We all know that the horse racing industry is hurting due to the economy and McConnell doesn’t care about that neither but he sure doesn’t mind how much money comes into this state at Derby time. There are not alot of big companies in this state anymore except for UPS which has not been hiring because they too are cutting back. The no smoking laws have also hurt businesses as well. People are still going to smoke but are not going to go to bars and restaurants where they are not allowed to smoke. Just fyi, we lost Brown and Williamson a long time ago and also lost Phillip Morris. Look how many jobs were lost due to those companies leaving or shutting down completely. Ford motor co use to be a large employer here as well but also due to the economy, they too let go of their employees and are not hiring.
Last thought is charity needs to begin at home. Quit sending our money overseas to help these other “poor” countries. We too are now a “poor” country and no one overseas cares about us except for when they need help, they expect the U.S. to provide it. Catholic charities also needs to stop bringing in foreigners that we cannot provide for. It makes me sick that these people who come here for free, receive everything for free are living well while the rest of us are struggling just to live and the homeless numbers are growing. Have you ever seen a foreigner standing on the road holding a sign that says “will work for food”? I haven’t. That should tell you something there. Have you ever been at a pharmacy and seen a foreigner count out ever penny they have to pay for their prescriptions? All I ever see them do is hand the pharacist some type of prescription coverage card and not pay a cent. The elderly either do without neccessities just to pay for their prescriptions or quit taking their meds altogether because they cannot afford them. This is all sickening and our appointed leaders who don’t do jack need to start doing something.

Labor & Industry Secretary: Political Posturing in the U.S. Senate Should Not Determine Livelihood of More Than 429,000 Pennsylvanians Depending on UC Benefits to Survive While Economy Recovers
More than 200,000 Pennsylvanians Could Lose Benefits in June, July
Harrisburg – Labor & Industry Secretary Sandi Vito

“It is truly disappointing that partisan politics have superseded the need to do the right thing for our citizens,” Vito said. “In June and July, more than 200,000 Pennsylvanians who lost their jobs through no fault of their own will be left without the unemployment benefits many of them need to survive. Every day this continues to drag on is another day of uncertainty that they should not be forced to endure.”

However, Vito did praise U.S. Senator Bob Casey and U.S. Senator Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania for their continued support of this bill and their understanding of its importance to unemployed workers in the commonwealth. HR 4213 passed the U.S. House in late May, and since that time, has languished in the U.S. Senate.

Without immediate action on this legislation, more than 111,000 Pennsylvanians are being left without benefits in June, with another 94,000 affected in July. By the end of the year, an estimated 429,000 people would lose benefits if no action is taken.

“Despite the fact our recovery efforts are showing progress, there are still five workers for every job opening,” Vito said. “It is too soon to eliminate unemployment program extensions.”

Emergency unemployment compensation and other Recovery Act provisions expired June 2. However, Pennsylvanians should continue to file their claims for Emergency Unemployment Compensation and state Extended Benefits (paper forms) as they have been. Some claimants may have weeks of eligibility remaining when the federal programs expired. While this does not guarantee payment for the weeks filed, it will allow for faster processing based on the guidance of the final legislation if it is enacted.

“Our unemployed residents should be able to use their time looking for employment without the added stress of wondering where their next meal will come from or how they will be able to keep their lights on.”

I was laid off a year ago and haven’t been able to find work.I’ve worked hard my whole life and I felt like I’d been hit in the stomach. I wish I could have sat down and cried but couldn’t. It all seemed so unreal. I had worked as hard as I could and had been loyal and conscientious. In the past seven years I missed three days of work: two days in the hospital with pnuemonia and one day to attend my grandfathers funeral. I loved my job even though it was physically and mentally stressful as well as dangerous. I’ve been working full time (and voting regularly) since 1980 and I’ve never seen anything like the situation I’m in now. I desperately need my benefits, I and my wife and children. This country is deep trouble, deeper than most people realize. There are so many different issues pulling the fabric of America apart. Hard times bring out the best and the worst in people. If we Americans would pull together, young and old, rich and poor, Republican and Democrat we could restore order quickly and get back in the race. America is a ‘can do’ culture, that’s how we became the leaders of the free world, an example for the rest of the world to see. Whether we realize it or not we are all in the same boat and our boat is taking water. Over the course of thirty years I’ve reinvented myself a time or two, pulled myself up by my bootstraps. I’ve learned that things are often not as bad as they seem but right now I’m not so sure anymore, in fact I’m down right scared. The most dangerous animal in the world is a well informed human being with nothing to lose. I pray we all come through this in one piece and that when the smoke clears we are still a Democracy. God bless America!

“Out of work” nailed it. Obama is in over his head along with his communist and socialist administration and agenda. (Yes, I voted for him!) There are not enough jobs for the numbers of unemployed. And it will take years before enough jobs are created. To those “FRUGAL” posters here, who in the hell can live on $10.00 with a family? And if you apply for these after school high school jobs and have a degree or a stable job history prior, they label you as overqualifed.

High unemployment states like, CA, NV, RI, MI – have been ignored by their own state reps who are against extending or adding weeks of UE benefits.

Folks, if this is not communism or socialism, I don’t know what is. Banks took taxpayer money and were bailed out, and it’s still business as usual with them. I’m too old, but I hope the younger UE become gutsy enough to create civil unrest for this cause! We have not seen anything yet!

(160) TT78 says:

I had lost my job in Feb 2010, and filed for unemolpyment. They hardly paid me anything to begin with, and only gave me 44 dollars in stimulus monies. Over a month later, I was offered a job 22 miles away from my home, when on the day before I was suppose to start my new job (March 20), my radiator in my car busted. The next morning I called the job to make them aware of what happened, and they told me I would have to wait another 6 weeks for the next training class, I was pissed.

To make a long story short, the job reported me to unemployment (even though I never started working), and unemployment stopped my benefits to do an investigation. They stopped my benefits on May 3, and said i was suppose to put that I refused an offer to work, when technically I did not refuse the offer, my car broke down, what could I have done?

Anyhow, they said it would take 4-6 weeks to give an answer on my claim. I looked for a job day in and day out, not to mention, after I fixed my car, it got reposessed, being that I could not pay the payments, from unemployment cutting me off, anyways, finally on June 22, I got hired on a job, which would not start til July 1. This goes without saying how I contacted unemployment every day to check on the status of my cliam, and the agents would just tell me they’re working on it.

Finally, on June 25, a lady from the jurisdiction dept called me and asked me a few questions, which I honestly answered, and she said that unemployment will send me out a check for 6 weeks plus the 6 weeks stimulus money. Oh I almost died because I was so happy, to me that was over a thousand bucks they would have to send me, but boy was I wrong…..

After I called the line to see if my check has been processed, the automated prompter said a check for 498.00 would be mailed to me. I said that must be a mistake because they owe me over 1100 dollars. I connected to an agent, and he told me the reason why is because my benefits had exhausted, and I only had over 350.00 left in my claim, and that Congress stopped further benefits to another tier, and that the deadline to get put over to another tier was May 29, 2010.

I was pissed, because they took all that time to fix a problem that was not even a problem to begin with, just so I could not get that money that was owed to me. I got outted for over 600.00 bucks, and in this day and age, what avg working American could afford to lose 600.0 bucks.

Moral of the story,….REPUBLICANS DO NOT CARE ABOUT POOR PEOPLE…..Nothing ever gets done until it starts affecting white people And that is the truth

IF YOU HAVE CHILDREN go to Department of Social Services in your area and get food stamps for your kids!!! They don’t have to starve. You can get $200-$300 a month in food stamps plus cash assistance by bringing in your bank statements showing you have under $2000 in resources and possibly get $400-$550 a month for rent. It’s not much, but something. Plus a free phone from Assurance Wireless and free health care called Medicaid. DSS will help you apply for all. Plus go to your local church and ask what resources they have. Food pantries also cash assistance too. DON’T LET YOUR KIDS BE OUT ON THE STREET OR STARVE WHEN THEY DON’T HAVE TO…

June 28, 2010 at 6:45 pm
(172) angel says:

ALSO, parents learn the welfare system (Department of Social Services) like immigrants have been for years. Say you are unmarried and get twice the cash assistance—possible $1200 a month. Figure out how not to get caught! United Way, Salvation Army, Catholic Charities, St Francis (google them in your area) give one time rent payout ONCE A YEAR but oddly enough, you need a job to prove you are self reliant. Your local church might be more lenient. Try to get a low paying $8 an hour job and go (or lie and say you have a job) to get 3-4 x the one time rent payout. Make the rounds to all of them. They told me I could work there for a while to prove income so I could get that one time rent payout. Ask, be creative, learn what others do. If you have kids, you have more welfare power than singles, I think. Move in with relatives. Do anything to protect your kids. I heard a story about a 13 year old boy who was abandoned by his parents cause they couldn’t provide food for him. Food stamps would’ve helped!!! If you prove you have no money, you get Emergency Food Stamps within a week! Use the libraries internet to find local chapters in your area. Your local church will have phone numbers and addresses for all.

(174) Marissa says:

I dearly hope that the unemployment benefit extensions bill will be APPROVED. I am afraid that if it is not bad things will happen to a lot people, including myself. I feel like within the next month and two we will see many people become evicted from their homes, tons of repos, a rise in crime, and worst of all-a rise in suidices. Dangerously more people will go without medical treatment that they cannot afford. The amount of other assistance that the government will have to pay in food stamps, medicaid, emergency relief, etc. will raise dramatically. The benefits paid by Family Independence Agencies and DHS will probaly increase the deficit dramatically too; the difference being that people will also lose their sense of security in countless ways. I am anxious and scared of my own future because I have just recieved my last week of Unemployment benefits, and they are now exhausted. My fiance was denied benefits from the beginning, so we have been without income from him since August 2009. Luckily, today he started a job -finally! We live with my mother, and that is the only reason we have been able to survive. Unfortunately my mom has been off of work for the last 5 weeks due to a torn rotater cuff which will need surgery Friday. The recovery for shoulder surgery is 6 months. When a person has a job, they generally budget their bills according to that income. When income is lost, many people, includding me, cannot properly afford the bills they have while on unemployment. Already my credit has gone bad as I am never able to pay my bills on time. Many bills are going unpaid, and I have had to wrack up a credit card and personal loans from family. As my bills go unpaid, they gain late fees and penalties along with interest. If congress waits to even propose the bill again, I believe that all of the bad things I listed will start to occur. Also, more late fees, penalties, and interest will occur for the people who are already struggling to survive. Then, even when the bill is past, we will be so far behind that we may not be able to catch up with the debts will be even higher! Businesses will suffer without the people to purchase their services/goods. Please somebody help us!!!

At the DPSS, I was met with a very rude and haughty social service woman who callously informed me of this. I drove all the way to LA and tried to appeal this decision. I lost once again by a judge who conducted my interview over the phone.. you know like a conference call. I was disgusted. He told me to contact my local congressmen to try and get the laws changed.. According to the work of people like Robert Prechter who have spent a lifetime studying global debt implosions this thing will last until it hits bottom in June 2016 when the Dow Industrial average will have fallen from 10300 to under 1000. The unemployment rate will peak somewhere around 35 per cent two years from now so enjoy today because they will seem like paradise compared to what is coming. The United States, which currently has 50 states will only have a dozen by 2016. People will organize into armed gangs to survive. Entire cities will be burnt to the ground. With their export markets gone and cash invested from overseas gone China and India will blow up — tens of millions will die from civil war and starvation. Cheer up, its at least not going to be boring !!!

(185) Andrew Barnett says:

I am a 52 year old unemployed worker who was downsized due to the “new normal” world of outsourcing, automation and young cheap labor. The only person you can depend on is yourself. Life is not fair, never was, never will be. You must always educate yourself and be looking for opportunities to sustain in this life. Sure as heck not easy, but we must persevere and press on. Stop blaming and depending on other people. They will disappoint you every time. One must look within and change the ways of thinking. A vital first step is to talk to God through prayer and reading his word through the Bible. All of life’s answers and solutions to our problems will be found there. In the end, eternal life is promised to those who truly believe and accept Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour. No one can make you believe, as we all have free will to decide. Take it seriously though, because it will help you on this earth and secure the beautiful eternal life to come.

To everyone here over 50, think about this …

Anyone that you send a resume to can find your name and address on the internet in 1 minute and right next to it will be your age. This means that human resource companies can throw your resume after they find out you are old and never get in trouble with anyone. Older workers are a class of protected worker, so why is it that there exists web sites that publish the age of people ? They don’t seem yet to be publishing your sexual preference, political preference and religion — so why age ? I have told the EEOC about this problem and they told me to “f” off. They continue to reject this bill because we arenot meant to live our lives at all but instead wither away to nothing! Also I feel President Obama should put his feet down and demand this has got to stop! he is in charge not these legislators.,he needs a backbone! He has 5 mos to go! And we hope he can get a job to support us and the 3 kids still at home. This is the worst case of not taking care of “OUR” own in this country. We will send food and spend money on wars to free other countries, but yet our country is held hostage by our own selfish government. I’m not saying I’m greatful for the food stamps we get, as my family is, but I don’t want food stamps, we want to work! And that is why this has to pass so that people like my husband can finish school and try and make a decent living by getting a JOB! Minimum wage can not support a family! And even those jobs are hard to come by!

Of course it’s easy to get angry at the GOP who is filibustering this. But it’s reasonable with the national debt we’ve taken on to ask how it will be paid for. All they want is for the money to come out of the 57% of the stimulus fund which still has not been spent. But Obama and the Dems see this money as theirs to reward Dem districts and push November’s vote their way. It never was designed to save/create jobs except for bloated overpaid government bureaucrats who tend to vote for them. No, this is all on the Messiah, who cares more for power and Party than us.

I still have to pay my utility bills so I hope they don’t mind partial payments.

(211) Emily Goodall says:

Thanks for your updates; I really appreciate these.

I don’t think that any of us should really be surprised by what has been happening. The GOP has been hugely successful in implementing their private industry supporters’ most urgent wish-list item: to create a large, desperate unemployed worker pool; workers who are so desperate that they will jump at any opportunity, for any wage, and be willing to work under the worst conditions without complaint.

In one swoop this solves two of private industry’s most plaguing problems: finding and keeping reliable, hyper-productive labor, and ridding themselves of labor union controlled employees.

The sub-prime crisis was no accident, I think everyone has figured that out by now. And that it was triggered right smack in the middle of Bush-conservative tenure was also not coincidence. The obvious bi-product, in phase two, has been the making of millions of desperate unemployed, made even more desperate by the loss of their life-line benefits right around the time that their personal safety-net resources have been exhausted, or nearly so.

So few jobs / so many desperate unemployed.

Good work, GOP.

(212) A 99er says:

Extending unemployment benefits to those that are still eligible for benefits has overshadowed the 99ers – those that have exhausted all benefits. That’s unfortunate since more than one million people have exhausted all benefits and that total could grow by 400,000 each month unless legislation is passed that adds another Tier of benefits or some other method of getting those that need them most.
Rob C and other unemployment advocates are continually working behind the scenes to get the attention of legislators to demand that more be done to address the needs of the 99ers. I’ll update those efforts in a future post, but know that they are working hard and are making some headway.

(217) Seen it all says:

Job growth is slowed, in part, by employers paying overtime to existing employees because it is cheaper than hiring a new employee. Two changes could made. (1) Shorten the work week from 40 hours to 32 hours per week. (2) Increase the overtime pay rate from “time and half” to “double time pay”. This would encourage employers to save payroll costs by hiring more employee instead of paying more dollars to fewer employees. All employees would be earning less but they would be working less too and those payroll dollars would be spread around a few more households. During the 70′s I worked at a grocery wholesaler that instead of laying off employees we all agreed to work less hours so everyone at least had a job. We got ourselves and the company through a rough patch by doing this.

I know that on EUC, once you fish a tier you can no longer move on to the next tier, but I am in the MIDDLE-of EB not moving tiers. I searched through the website (Massachusetts Gov.)and found a little blurb saying that the EB program ended June 26(due to it not being voted in to extend I guess?). I never got a letter and on TV all they say is that you can not move on to the next tier and they say that you can continue where you are as long as you have a credit/$ in acct. They are wrong. If you get EB-it stops THIS week no matter what you have left for $ in your acct. I just wish i had known this, so I could’ve tried to somehow prepare. they should have to send you a letter about stuff like this. Because it hasn’t been mentioned on TV, I don’t even know for sure know if it is part of what congress is voting on-does anyone know? know that they don’t come back from vacation till the 12th.

Where is the money coming from to pay for the additional unemployment benefits? The states are broke, the federal government is trillions of dollars in debt and yet people want the borrowing to continue. The debt cannot continue to grow other alternatives need to be explored. Let’s have the banks offer low interest loans to new businesses, they got us in the jam, we bailed them out and now they can pay the people back. The federal government has to stop borrowing or the downward spiral will never end.

Those BASTARDS! They don’t know what it’s like to be in our shoes. Apparently the economy doesn’t effect them. They get their fat paychecks no matter what, along with a couple of bonus’s. I was laid off my job after 12 years as a machinist. I watched over 1/2 of our customers send their work to China and other customers just simply shutting down because of the economy. So when I had to cut corners to make ends meet, the first thing to go was my credit cards, since those pigs took all that bail out money. They could have divided up that money amongst the Americans and cleaned this mess up.

(225) Judith says:

I considered myself to be an informed, educated citizen, but I have felt like an illiterate attempting to understand the unemployment system. I am an unemployed teacher (lost my position June, 2009, my program was cut) and have collected unemployment. In May, I was incorrectly told that I would receive a 14 week extension. Even though the money was in my account, when I reached my anniversay date, everything was eliminated and my account no longer had any funds. I had to file a new claim
and am now being told that I would have received an extension due to high rate of unemployment in MA, if Congress voted to do so, but since I subbed for a few months, within the limits of my unemployment and I can sub in Sept., I get nothing. So, I screwed myself by attempting to earn a few extra bucks. There’s no guaranteed salary in subbing. I have sent out or emailed hundreds of applicatkon packets, but at my age, I’d be too expensive because our country no longer values seasoned teachers. My Senator, Brown, the one the country fell in love with doesn’t respond to my emails and phone messages. I didn’t vote for him and never will.

July 7, 2010 at 3:58 pm
(226) Brett says:

I used my 26 weeks and then I was told to reopen another claim, I did, they added another 14 weeks to it, I got one check from that and then I had to call the claim center the following week since they told me my extensions have been closed, last Sunday I called the claims center since some of my friends are doing the same to make sure if the claims are reopened by congreess there won’t be a screw up, I would suggest everyone keep calling in every week just to be counted.
I’m considered interstate, since I lived in one state but moved to another state, I’ve dealt with the unemployment office here in my new state and there down right rude, one person syggested that I should’ve stayed where I was living before, I just believe when unemployment settles down all those claims adjusters will be looking for jobs.
To pass the time of day while looking for work, I do some volunteering, neither of those agencies hire people but I keep busy.
Right now I’m concerned with my bills, no money so there not going to be paid, I did apply for food stamps and was approved, that’s all I qualify for since I’m a single male, no kids.
As for the government, they should’ve never went on vacation with so much work to be done, I’d love to see the government take a pay cut or reduced hours or furlough some days off like the rest of the United States people are doing just to keep there jobs.
I think tomorrow I’ll take a cash advance from one of credit cards.
I’d like to know how the bill collectors deal with non payment customers, utilities here if not paid within 30 days they shut you off

July 7, 2010 at 5:20 pm
(227) Chris R. says:

Quick question for those that keep asking where the money will come from….

Do you have even the slightest clue of what this nation spends on defense or the ongoing wars? I’m not saying defense spending should end, but let’s be honest, a very small cut to defense would solve the issue.

Also, there are dollars left that were earmarked for stimulus that are not committed. Is this not the most basic form of stimulus? Keeping Americans paying their bills and buying necessities?

While I agree with the person that suggested unemployment could be better structured to encourage a person to take any job regardless of pay, that’s not how it works. So if people are forced to work within the system, DO NOT blame them because they do what they must to support their families.

Hmmm… Let’s see here … I have been unemployed off and on for almost 2 years now. Notice I said OFF & ON. That would mean that I have been putting in serious effort in seeking employment. I lost all of my health benefits along with my “decent” paychecks. I had an emergency surgery (life threatening) last year that put me so far in debt, I couldn’t see straight. So I had to claim Bankruptcy in order to have some sort of sanity (by the way, I didn’t have a single credit card debt on my bankruptcy claim … so I am not someone that is irresponsible with money or credit cards). I have worked my butt off since I was 14 years old (I’m 40 now), and I have always paid my bills on time and have paid my taxes on time. But now that our country is experiencing an all out Depression (thanks Bush Admin) I am now behind on my taxes (thanks to having to PAY taxes on unemployment benefits aka kicking an already dead dog), and now I will be losing what little I have been trying to survive on now because CONGRESS thinks I’m a crackhead with no motivation to work??? WOW!!! AMAZING!!! Thanks for punishing hardworking Americans with your ridiculous logic. SHAME ON YOU!!! I hope you enjoyed your Crystal & caviar last weekend while I drank a bottle of Pepto-Bismol to relieve the ulcer I now have, thanks to you! I’m sure you will all feel MUCH better when all the people that have worked so hard to pay your way (yeah, we the people that pay our taxes, pay YOUR wages) will be living in TENT CITIES all across the great US of A!!! Just remember that their is a nice warm place waiting for you at the end of your journey called life. Or you could change that karma and help all of the good people that have pride and care about our nation and our families. With no more unemployment and no luck finding a job, It looks like its time to lose everything, the car, cell phone, I owe the IRS from last year and my credit is now shot because i could not pay my credit cards. Some employers check your credit. Is this fair now days? Moving back home with my dad, how sad is that? Time to start over. what can i do? I have been looking for work almost every weekday, I have had interviews but no luck getting hired in LA-Irvine area..This is getting very frustrating

Congress is funded by our tax dollars (while they take another week-long break), corporate raiders and wall street get huge bonus checks funded by our tax dollars, our Gulf waters are being destroyed by a greedy oil company causing even more people to be out of work, and the average taxpayer can’t get an unemployment check. All the while, jobless figures are “going down” as people are no longer eligible for unemployment. Unbelievable.

I agree with the few of you that have mentioned the extention is a must. I’m sure most of these politicians are way over paid. They can afford vacations and fancy cars, yet people like me that have the same education level can’t find a job in the real world. We aren’t looking for a handout. We pay taxes everyday of our lives and everywhere we go. And while our pockets get smaller, they are planning the next trip. It’s impossible that there is no money to help the taxpayers. We are from US, stop giving it to b.s. war funding and other countries because they need something. Politicians help your country and it’s issues and stop worrying about other countries first.

Congressmen in Washington D.C. have forgotten why they are there. They are there to represent us and right now… some of these guys are only there to represent themselves. Sure the unemployment rates in certain states are a little lower than some… but like here in North Carolina where it’s still over 11%, things are getting a little dim. Difficulty ensues when you go to retail stores and resturants to apply for jobs and they deny you up front because you’re an over-qualified individual. In other words it’s like, “if you find something else like you’ve had before, you’ll be a flight risk.” Senators and Representatives of the House… fear this warning… if you don’t take care of the people come your election year, your people won’t take care of you… in other words… welcome to our side of the fence.

(246) Mark says:

After reading these post I am never amazed at the responses and understanding that my fellow Americans seem to possess! Out of everyone I worked with in a Tent Rental business ages 18-63, approximately 15 people in all,
Only 3 voted in the last presidential election. I have been
unemployed since Dec 09 and I am quickly approaching my 26 weeks. Many of my friends have been collecting close to the 99 weeks and will soon be done. I guarantee you that everyone of the politicians and their families are voting. I am sure their families are all voting, and I’m sure those who stand for or against pollution, abortion, stem cell research, drunk driving, teachers, and many others are voting. The working class stiffs don’t vote for the most part and the country moves on without them. I’m not sure if I will get a check soon or will qualify for any extension if it exist at the time I run out. Yes, wars and bank bailouts are having money thrown at them left and right, but we are allowing it by our apathy in government participation. Starts at your township, then your county, then your state! Fix it on election day. Be proud to be an American and vote! We can stop spending the money in government. Government workers will never stop voting to take more of our hard earned money. I don’t blame them. We created the opportunity and watched as businesses close and factories move over seas and the jobs disappear. I read post after post blaming George Bush for the mess, but what caused the mess? The banks and emotions? Corporate greed? The Democrats and Republicans both signed off on getting rid of stacks of rules and regulations allowing the banks to make risky loans. They gave credit cards to dogs for goodness sakes. The interest rates on these cards are criminal yet no one legislates protection from them. Why? The banks support the politicians! If we don’t vote, who will the politicians listen too? If my money runs out I have tough choices to make. Move for one to someplace which won’t require as much to live. Sell everything I own ,for a great loss, including my home BEFORE, I loose it. Someplace where I can grow my own food and live off the land if I have to. I’m not going on welfare because it’s a trap for those who wish to live forever on government assistance! Leave that to those who absolutely can’t live without it. I’m going to a state where property taxes are lower and create a small lot of land to build a small home, for cash, myself. If family members start to fail they can move with me and we’ll create a self sustaining community. Creating a glimmer of hope. Then continue to participate in changing things in government to make our lives better. Corporations are not evil, they are necessary, but so are small start ups. We need to support our towns and communities now and vote corruption and wasteful spending out! Then we can move on. Lets bring our boys and girls home from around the world and give them jobs protecting America and spend the money here. They can be with their families and help each other! Amen America.

In Reponse to post (244) Get a Life! That is a shame that you really feel or think that way. Many of our people here in America need help and resources in order to get back on our feet. It bad of enough that many of us nearly 2 million people are unemployed. We don’t need to hear any negative thoughts or feelings from you or anyone else.

For your information when we were working we paid into unemployment so that money is rightful ours to get and keep. I am pretty sure that everybody who posted a comment for this article if the could the would work. However if you have been keeping up with the news and the current events jobs are very hard to come by. For everyone job there are between 30 to 40 people or more applying for that job.

For the many people that are unemployed I know things are hard right now however if you believe in the Lord things will get better you just have to have faith in yourself and in the LORD! I know many of you have fallen but pick yourself back up!

We have good news. Senator Robert Byrd’s successor is going to be sworn in next Tuesday afternoon, and immediately after that, the Senate will hold another vote on extending Emergency Unemployment Compensation and full federal funding of Extended Benefits through the end of November 2010. We expect we will finally have the 60 votes needed to proceed to a final vote on the bill. The House can quickly take up the Senate version, and hopefully, well before the end of next week, the President can sign the bill into law and the programs will be retroactively reinstated.

We need your help for one last push. Between now and next Tuesday, it is imperative that you keep calling and emailing both your Senators and Representatives to let them know how important it is that they vote yes on this bill. We need to hold all the votes together and get this done!

Please continue to take action by emailing your representatives and urging them to immediately pass H.R.5618, which will reinstate the federal extensions. You can also call the Congressional Switchboards, (202) 224-3121 for the Senate, and (202) 225-3121 for the House, and ask for your members’ offices.

For some additional talking points, please see our chart that shows which Senators and Congress Members voted against the extensions, as well as the impact their vote has had in your state. Please make sure to reach out to those who have voted against the extensions in the past, and let them know how their actions – and the resulting extension lapse – have impacted you. We’ll be sure to post updates on our blog with any updates that we receive.

Thanks for all your dogged determination to see this through. We hope that for those of you who will be getting benefits restored that it provides a measure of comfort, no matter how temporary.

I received a letter stating that I had $19,000 dollars left in a fund to draw from. I had been unemployed since April of ’09 but had returned to school because as we all know there are no real jobs there anymore. I received an opportunity, through the Unemployment office no doubt, to take a temporary job that will be ending July 30th. They guaratnteed that those funds would still be availalble at the end of this job, but it would look good to have that
“in-between” work experience. I verified this on several occassions. Needless to say, I went in to check since the job is about to end only to be told that the “deadline” to re-open my claim had passed and unless congress extends the deadline my family and I are just out of luck. Just like the rest of the of the government aid, if I had just stayed home and done nothing theyh would have awarded me for it. By going out and trying to earn a living I screwed myself, my wife, and my children. What does that say for the working class world. The less you do the more you get. Go figure?

I live in California and the ridiculous part of trying to get a job around here is the fact you have to be Spanish bilingual. A decade ago that was barely in the help wanted ads; employers “requiring”/ “preferable” to bilingual job seekers. This is America whether anyone likes it or not! Our nation is diverse, I get that, but screw the b.s. of not being bilingual in order to get a job or interview. You can have all the credentials, certifications, and degrees etc. But no “BILINGUAL”, no job. Unemployment sure as hell is not easy; Congress going into recess after they MURDERED the extension bill was unbelievable! “Here, let me postpone this until after my summer vacation in the Hamptons. Oh the unemployed will be fine, they can go into the fields, apply for the military, or go to school.” WITH WHAT FRIGGIN HELP IDIOTS?!! So those of you who think we’re just 3!tC*ing about our life and money troubles, I can’t wait for you to feel the burn when Congress passes bills to screw you’re livelihood and family. When I was laid off in Nov 2008, I was receiving the $600 weekly benefit. I worked as a volunteer in several capacities in my community, and networked my little behind off.

Finally, I got a temp to perm job in Feb 2010. It was going well, but after 2 weeks, they decided to go in another direction. They told me my skills and attitude were excellent, that they were very pleased with my work. They tried to find me another position in their org, but unfortunately they couldn’t. They offered me a good recommendation and showed me the door.

My benefits were recalculated to $305 per week. I’m dying here. There is no “retroactive” in the recent bill, although what happened to me in March, won’t happen to anyone going forward. Out of pocket, this is about $7k I didn’t collect, that I would have collected. I’m working all day, every day looking for a job and not sleeping at night. Turned off the water heater to save. Cancelled my newspaper subscription. Don’t want to eat, cause food costs money.

Is this whining? Give me a break….. there but for the grace of God…..

BTW: I’m about to take a 8 week job paying a fraction of what it’s worth. It won’t pay the bills, but is better than DUA.

My son was denied unemployment because he had been employed by a bank connected to aig but did not get bonus’s, and earned a salary at $10.00 an hour. Niw he has moved in with us because his wife doesnt want to support him. he sold his vehicle, so now he has a credit card bill and a phone bill. less than $200.00 a month. his grocery bill is maybe $30.00 a week and he tries so hard to find work. So much for for better for worse, for richer for poorer……There are so few jobs open here….most pay minimum wage and are part time but there are 70 applicants for each of those jobs. So now we are not losers, he has a great college education, good experience and is a very intelligent man. There are just no jobs here. Shame on you for calling everyone losers. I am a 99er, In fact,I haven’t had an unemployment check since the beginning of may, 2010. Written my senator, governor, They just don’t seem to care. People say were lazy, looking for a handout, not looking for jobs, If that were the case, why don’t I have a job yet. I have sent out and filled out more than 1000 apps. THERE ARE NO JOBS OUT THERE THAT WILL HIRE A 53 YEAR OLD MAN. I have 30 years of delivery driving exp., and have been turned down for jobs left and right. Although i’m qualified for all of them, they don’t want an old man. Even got turned down for a job dropping off newspapers in the morning, using my own van, 3 hours a morning. About to lose my house, Saved money most of my life, That’s now gone, borrowed from my children, brothers and sister. Now they need their money back and I can’t pay them back and now the family won’t even talk to me anymore. I guess I can’t blame them. I’ve worked my ass off for 35 years straight, never late on any of my bills, Now, I can’t afford to pay attention. My wife of 30 years is disabled and needs medicine that we can’t afford. WE NEED FOR THIS GOVERNMENT TO DO SOMETHING. Get these jobs rolling, I don’t want a handout, I want a job. Just read that california spent 70 million dollars to create 8 jobs, what the hell is that, stimulus money our wonderful president gave them. This country can give money like that to crooks like that, give money to other countries at the drop of a hat, but can’t give a poor person in this country a damn cheeseburger. PASS THIS TIER 5 NOW, Before it’s too late for millions of people in this country. What the hell is the matter with you, If our forefathers were alive today they would kick your asses.

Crystal, my payment detail for unemployment looks just like yours. I haven’t received assistance since April and have been unemployed for something like 112 weeks! The Democrats are cowards to pass anything with any substance and the Republicans don’t care about anyone making less than a million a year. I’ve emailed and faxed my senators and congressperson and it hasn’t helped one bit. I also email news organizations hoping that they may talk about it more since most of them seem to have forgotten all about us as well (except perhaps for Ed Schultz). I don’t know what to do. This is simple math, if there is one job for every 6 unemployed people (which of course means really there’s 1 for every 12) what hope is there for most of us. We need help now! Our politicians could care less about adding millions of us 99ers to the homeless population. Suicide is way up and I completely understand why.

Nice to see there is another one of me here. Anyway, have any 99ers heard about the Bill yet? I can’t find anything on it for Tier 5. Please also continue to write to congress we need to make this an issue for the upcoming elections get the word out call your representatives people and if you are not a 99er then you need to also voice your opinion because you may need it also!

Jeff J,

I agree with you I am not 53 years old but my mom is over your age it it took me a long time to help her find a job during the early part of this resssion now that I have been out of work I just don’t know what to do. They don’t want older people, they don’t want young people I just don’t get it. I don’t know what area you are but have you tried to get medical help from a county hospital for your wife? Bring in your unemployment slip that says you have a zero balance and ask for state insurance. As for a job I pray that we all can find one even $8hr. We need help and like you i have put in 1000s of apps too.

This is why our country is weak we fall under political ploys and believe them and fight our own because they have fail into this reccession. I feel really sorry when those who feel they have power now loose their jobs and find reality! It is common sense when Governemnt and business causes a high unemployment rate it is their duty to do the right thing! Enough said! Good luck to all ..

The Government caused this by not regulating outsourcing among other things, and they have the nerve to call us lazy if we have been out of work 2 years.

Listen between the lines to Obama’s last speech. “My family worked so hard…” So would we if there were jobs. His handling of this and leaving 99ers out is a huge mistake. No mention was made of Debbie Stabenow’s bill at all in his speech, no questions were asked about it and the media is keeping it hush.

Shame on the Government. We will all suffer, including Government.

Johnny-if you see a man holding up a sign saying he’s starving and needs money to feed his family, direct him to the local Department of Social Services where he can get food stamps or EBT card for his kids and himself. An EBT card is like a credit card. They give you a few hundred dollars on it and refill it every month. You can even have assets but not a lot of income to qualify. I think the max income is $900 a month. If you are on disability, the max income is $1800 a month. You can get cash to pay rent. And free medical care, Medicaid, for you and kids. Also a free phone called Assurance Wireless by Virgin. Ask and you shall receive. Kids do not have to be the suffering pawns in the Government’s messed up game. Let’s take care of them.

Unemployed in NY I agree vote all out but this is not going to happen it is known that republicans will get in with tea party if people has kept up. If this country would smarten up and vote a majority in the senate I mean A MAJORITY with the delays, blocks and games THE REPUBLICANS have been doing the past 20 or so months and beyond. Something might have been done but we forget this!

(300) Mick says:

JJ your Right! I have been a Rep supporter for years but the past 20 months and finally today from what I seen the facts are there they are the most corrupted group in the political parties. Democratics are not perfect we know this. I work part time with several friends who are laid off with no living jobs insight to pay their rent and have exhausted all their lifelines.

It is a shame that the Republican party has Blocked, Delayed and recently talked about spending, so called lowering government, and providing and caused such stoppages just for a small amount of prosperty and votes from confused and angry, frustrated people. They have every right to be angry and frustrated but there are very limited voices heard on the news although they will mention the economy is bad which it still is.

At the same time the democratics DO NOT lead or told to lead but voters without Republicans which makes them afraid and they should be. They stopped almost helping the unemployed . No lifelines for ALL Unemployed except a few for a Bill in July. But it is the voting peoples fault including the unemployed. No media touches on the unemployed anymore people have drop off the systems like flies which of course the numbers are going to look better.

With more and corruption I find myself only going to vote for the political party who stays and gets things done for this country inspite of a mid election. This will show which party is going to actually in reality do what is humanly right.

Good luck to all!

I truly dont believe I’ll ever get hired, the unemployment rate is so hifgh, it will take years for the situation to stabilizes so the only thing that could happen is if I get lucky. I’m prepared to face the worst, including living in a shelter. whatever happen to me then let it be. Meanwhile I keep looking for work. It is still better than not looking at all. as long as I’m looking there is always a chance, maybe 1%, if I stop looking there will be no chances. GOD BLESS all the unemployed poor suffering hearts. All I can say is if we the voters smarten up and get more majority in the senate and house we will see help if not we are headed for worse changes in this country. The next downfall that we will see is the finishing of this country along with the social security system abolished. If americans voters do not stand with common sense this November the ignorant will see their demise and it is their own fault. Good luck to all and stand strong !

(304) Tamara says:

This is nothing less than cruel on the part of the legislatures. If the job situation wasn’t as DIRE as it is, there NEVER would have been “extensions”. It would have stopped after 6 months. That is clear proof that there is something very wrong here. Let’s remind ourselves that it is called “INSURANCE” not welfare, not a gov’t handout. We all paid into it when we were working. And let’s also remind others that what we are getting is only a fraction of what we previously earned. At one time, we all had jobs, homes, cars and all the necessities of life. How did we get there??? We were working! There are no jobs for us. We are rejected because of our education, age and experience… but we will never know which one. In very frank words, we are being replaced by cheap labor. In return, businesses are able to make more of a profit. However, there is a consequence…which I believe this is reason for businesses declining….. when you hire cheap labor, your business suffers eventually… You are getting more than you bargained for….These people do not have the work ethic that we do. They live and think differently and they are transferring that mentality to how they do their job… I’ve seen it for myself, when I was working AND I’m seeing it now, too, being unemployed and looking at it from the outside… “Money is the root of all evil”. How true. So, since we are not “qualifying” for jobs out there… we need to continue our insurance benefits…. Do welfare recipients have to go through this???? I highly doubt it.

To speak to the comment of “getting 2 jobs at …..” if need be…. Sorry, did you know that if you don’t speak Spanish you are out of luck???. Remember, if you are able to speak Spanish, you are very “valuable” to the business… you are able to bring in more revenue, by appealing to a wider range of folks… It’s not that hard to understand. It’s happening everywhere, this has been building for years…. just look around next time you go out.

Unemployed this last comment of getting two jobs has got to stop. American worker should not have to do this! It is a shame these type of people have bought on the the right to think their way America will prosper. We tryed this this is why we have to work two jobs because of the same practices of the more wealthy. I am sorry if the truth hurts but this election if Senate and House does not get a more majority to set an example of the corrupted money taking charge from corporate , insurance companies etc. to elect the minorty back in to show money id power so they know they have control of the people we are in trouble. If this happens ALL Unemployed will not see any more help to get them back to work. Wages will still decline because they know they have control on anything not the PEOPLE. So American voter better think smart and not run scared like they think you will with the scar tactics and show we mean business!

Marley, it sounds good but most people are too complacent and won’t act trying to get a Tier 5 for example. Just look at the low turn out at the rally last month. A bill was enacted but no one’s even talking about it. We are left to flounder hoping to find minimum wage jobs. Most over 50 years old can’t even find them and the one’s that have them can’t pay their bills with it. I don’t think if the economy will get better because the government is not acting in our best interests and no one suffering is acting out or knows what to do other than faxing senators who don’t do anything. Writing on message boards won’t get the point across that we need help! We need action and lots of it otherwise we are goners. It’s a travesty.

Their right but you will working for poverty wages I don’t care if you have a degree. This has already tried it don’t work equality works. I would like to say that i’m pissed as all get out but, pissed has long been gone, now just trying to survive. 6 months now since my last unemployment check and all hope of keeping my home for the past 23 years is all but gone, but, I guess it only matters to my wife and I as it has fallen on deaf ears from our government. I don’t know if anybody else has had a problem with the IRs, But I have, couldn’t pay taxes this year from my unemployment, so, the IRS, stepped in and took my last &70.00 out of my bank account, which was going to go for my wifes medicine, I called them and asked why they did that and their answer was, Because we can, NICE. So, as I leave this site, I want to say, Good luck to all and hope that things get better. I know many of you wish this government would do something about this problem, But, they are all rich and could care less about us trying to survive. STAY STRONG PEOPLE, GOODBYE.

Working wasn’t just about getting a paycheck,I felt proud of myself.I was able to support my family and provide them with medical and life insurance. Seeing my W-2 at the end of the year, filled me with a sense of accomplishment. I felt like I was contributing to society. I can’t understand why this Dunnings guy is jeopardizing people’s lives. Doesn’t he realize that at the end of November, there will be millions who will be without any source of income. What about all of the families? Being unemployed affects everything. I had to dip into my small retirement fund twice, to pay the mortgage. If I go into foreclosure, I would have to scramble to find adequate housing for my family and the city would lose revenue because they could not collect property taxes and this would affect funding public service systems and schools. There has got to be a way to fix this crisis.

Chrysler left me high and dry before this job closing both St Louis plants.

now after 9 months of nothing but low pay no benefit jobs if you can get one when your over qualified (love that one) and extension running out.

Doubt an extension is coming any time soon and the stimulus at least in this area was a joke none of the road crews or contractors hired anyone .. only using the stimulus to keep there workers on OT.

I have been out of work since 2008 because of medical reason’s, in September of 2008 I was let go by my former employer because they couldn’t hold onto my job any longer.
In November of 2008 I was released by my Doctor and tried re-applying back at my former employer because I had been told when I’m well and as long as there was a position available they would consider hiring me back, this coming from the head of Human Resources, didn’t work out that way, unfortunately for me I had restrictions and my former employer again wouldn’t rehire because they said I had to be 100 percent well, so I filed for unemployment in November of 2008 but wasn’t approved for unemployment until February of 2009 when I appealed my case and the state of New Jersey found in my favor and I received retro from unemployment as well, to make a long story short, from February 2009 up until August the 2nd week of September I was able to collect unemployment and trying to find work at the same time, like millions of other Americans.
About the 2nd week of September of 2010 I received a letter form the State of New Jersey stating my unemployment would be finished and I would not eligible for an extension, unless another extension would be signed, correct if I’m wrong but didn’t the President just sign a bill in July, extending unemployment through to November?

(324) ed says:

The U.S. Department of Labor today announced the findings of a multi-year study of the impact of the Unemployment Insurance program in stabilizing the economy during a deep recession. The study was commissioned by the department and undertaken by IMPAQ International LLC and the Urban Institute.

Using UI data and the proprietary economic model from Moody’s Economy.com, researchers studied how gross domestic product, employment and other economic variables would have performed without the increase in regular UI benefits; federally-funded Emergency Unemployment Compensation; and Extended Benefits, including the offsetting effect of the payroll taxes that pay for UI.

Thanks to the aggressive, bipartisan effort to expand UI benefits and increase eligibility during both the Bush and Obama administrations, the Unemployment Insurance program had an even more positive impact on the economy than in previous recessions.

Among the key findings:

For every dollar spent on UI, economic activity increases by two dollars.
During each quarter of the recent recession, UI benefits kept an average of 1.6 million Americans on the job.
At the height of the recession, UI benefits averted 1.8 million job losses and kept the unemployment rate approximately 1.2 percentage points lower.
UI benefits reduced the fall in GDP by 18 percent. Nominal GDP was $175 billion higher in 2009 than it would have been without UI benefits. In total, unemployment insurance kept GDP $315 billion higher from the start of the recession through the second quarter of 2010.
“Unemployment insurance is one of the best investments we can make, not only for the millions of people that utilize UI benefits to provide for their families in a time of need, but for the millions more whose jobs are kept secure because of the stabilizing effect it has on our economy as a whole,” said Secretary of Labor Hilda L. Solis.

Who cares? When a baby cries because it’s tgaken from it’s mama because she did something desperate to get food in its mouth or a roof over it’s head. Or it’s dad or grampa falls in disgrace and looses pride in a bottle because his lively hood has been stripped by him. Where is Rockellers idea of the coprs of engineers when men could work and feed their families. All gone to China or Iran or whereever….yes i am just another unemployed frustrated person who has reached the end and that my friend is a very dangerous place to put millions ofamericans at christmas. I am a 99′r laid off in June 2008.I am not afraid to do any knid of work but there are no jobs in Ohio to be had. I got a part time job a walmart unloading semi trucks, I am a 58 yr old woman. I did this job as long as it lasted but got laid off when they got younger workers, and illegals for less money, I use to be a vice president, worked in auto and electronic factory, accounting company, and retail, so you can see I have good skills, but no one will hire me.
I lost all my unemployment in June, and have had no money from the government since then. I lost my car in Feb 2009, but still find a way to look for work. I have a dolly i use on trash day to go out and find things to fix that i can sell on line. WITH winter coming don’t know if i will make it or not
allthe unemployment needs to be extended including adding a tier 5 until there are jobs again in America, also we need to bring our jobs back from China, India and all the other foreign countries they have been outsourced to. NO one has the right to call me lazy or anyone else on unemployment lazy, we are Americans who had unemployment insurance (not a hand out program as some call it) this was paid for by our employers for us incase of times like these!! Unemployment really is more like 20% to 25% if you count everyone still unemployed that you have stopped paying beneifits to. All we hear from you is about taking care of the illegals, which are causing part of the debt ever day you give them welfare. IT’S TIME TO TAKE CARE OF HONEST HARD WORKING AMERICANS NOW!!!!!

We all know that ignoring something isn’t gonna go away.
Sorry! I didn’t vote November 3rd for anybody, why should I? to be unhappy again next year, let’s face it this country at some point was going to go in the toilet and slowly it is, Thanks for the other guy that was in office before Obama.

Reading these comments on Thanksgiving evening is sad! Extensions should be passed along with additional weeks for those of us who exhausted all benefits immediately and indefinitely until the national unemployment returns to at least 6-7%.

This is the beginning of the end for the US. Wait until mid-summer when millions more will be without a lifeline after exhausting their weeks.

All unemployed people the people in America has spoken they want republicans in office so they can set back and collect and do nothing to govern it is a fact check the last 10 years. It is a shame these people would give these wealthy republicans who caused this issue a job. I fell for all unemployed and think all should get UI benefits until the normal unemployment numbers comes back. You did not cause this issue the Government did another fact. Now your own american people attack the Unemployed and don’t even realize they are soon to be in the same boat because their republican buddies have them in their hip pockets and would not even help them if they would wake up and pay attention. Most Unemployed are not lazy in a recession. Just remember fighting against the people in your own country your selling out for a vote on a republican who has not done nothing for america is stupid as your China partners are aware of and have said this. Unemployed have republicans to thank for NO UI extention they would rather give the rich a tax break etc. to create jobs. Oh I forgot they already have a tax break and it runs out December. Where is the living JOBS then! Wise up before it is too late some say it already is! Good luck to ALL Unemployed an America.

With the unemployed in such dire shape, why would they even think of convening for now? NOT having any money, means no Christmas at all!! The trickle down economy, means no spending, which means further layoffs, etc. I will lose my mortgage that I have paid into for 20 years, I will lose the used car that I bought 2 weeks before I got laid off. I am already losing my health insurance at the end of December and I am diabetic. There are no options because without unemployment, I cannot even afford the state health insurance….maybe I should take out a very large life insurance policy.

I’ve been out of work sence the day after Christmas of 2008. New district manager came in and let go all of us that was in our late 50′s. No reason. We are all collecting unemployment or was. I had just bought a new car two weeks before I was let go. My husband is not working. I’m in my late 50′s and I have sent I can’t began to tell you how many resumes out. I get nothing. I have over 30 years of retail behind me. I want to work. What is wrong with this goverment. I have not had health ins. Sence I was let go. I can’t afford it. We can’t get any help from no one because the welfare dept. said my husband gets to much money with his disability. He had a lung transplant a few years ago and has also lost his eye site and can’t work. I just want to work full time, I want a job. So, I’d just like to thank you republicans for your help in this. Also thanks to you that voted to help us.

ALL Unemployed and I mean ALL Unemployed not the political few in the new bills being offered. First of all is there a new Bill out there now that supports ALL Unemployed 26weeks, 43 weeks, 99 weeks etc.? As someone has said before right now if they are unemployed republican or democrat or independent does not stand together and get a bill for all you can kiss this one goodbye. People have been telling you this months and months ago along with voting the bureaucratic republicans back in to vote for the wealthy more breaks as well as large corporate interests. It was also said that the Republican party will be 2011 downfall because of the american people still believe they are for all America and China has said it but you have to be very ignorant if you have not kept up. It is time to call all republicans to say if you do not prove you are on the the side of ALL Americans and ALL Unemployed we will clean house.

Larry your comments are right but the republicans have people believing people are going to save them and this country by talking conservative and using the Uemployed as the crutch when we are in a economic downfall of living jobs. I’m 44yrs old, and I have worked most of my life. I’ve been unemployed since June 2009, and I’ve been attending DeVry University and working a part-time job (8.50 hr.) since October 2009. When I was laid off I was making $40,000 annually, and I knew without a degree I would probably never receive this type of salary again. But, after reading some of the post, I’m beginning to wonder. I made the call to the unemployment office to find out where my EB stood, I was told I have only one more week to collect, and she then wished me luck! Finding jobs today is a nightmare, you’re either under or overqualified, there’s no in between, one almost has to sell their soul to get their foot in the door! I now have to forgo school, and find employment quickly, if I don’t who will pay my rent, phone, electric, health and car insurance, and food bills? The politicians don’t give a damn about the unemployed Americans, those of us who have been without a job for more than a year are considered “lazy, and not looking for a job.” But, that’s just not the case, many of us are working part-time/temp jobs and/or attending school, does that count for anything? As reported, by not extending the benefits, there will be a significant drop in the revenue that is pumped back into the economy, which could lead to the loss of more jobs in the future.

I am 44 years old and I was a Paralegal with two degrees for over 20 years. I live in Geogia but will probably be moving back to Pa with my mom and my daughter. My husband is an over the road truck driver and my UC just ended. I am in a depression and cry all day and night, because I do not know if we will make it and I know my son will be disappointed to not be getting anything for Christmas. We can barely pay our bills. Someone needs to do something. I have been begging for a job and am over qualified or if I do get a response, I am asked to fill out these stupid things on line and return them. The last one I did, it put a virus in our system and I had to scrape money together to get a new computer. The rich get richer and we end up homeless.

Denise, check Toys for Tots locations to ask if your son can be a recipient. Also check food stamps, and cash assistance at your local DSS Department of Social Services. Check online for close locations. Most people I know are on food stamps now. It’s a different world. Help your son by helping yourself. Check Medicaid for free health insurance to get you a therapist and meds for your depression. You owe it to him to be the best you can be. Be creative and make the best out of this. It’s possible. This might be a time to reconnect with your husband and your son. Check free things to do with him-parks, libraries, free events. Bake a cake or Christmas cookies with him. You could make all the difference in this trying time.

As long as there are campaign contributions there will be votes swayed in favor of those that contribute the most, you can live in denial but this is the truth, why else do you think that America’s technology has been stiffled? Electric cars have been around since the 1920′s, think Big Oil wants electric cars? Remember GM’s EV-1? What happened to those cars and all that technology? No, not speaking of conspiracy theories, just the truth. It’s time that all political parties stop pointing the finger, blaming each other and do what’s right for our great nation and the citizens of this nation! They should be ashamed of themselves for going on vacation without extending the unemployment benefits!!! Oh, that’s right, they have no conscience, being ashamed would require them to have emotions and a conscience. I pray for our elected officials each and every night, praying that they see the needs of the people and not the money of the corporations.

Anyway I lost a job back in Aug 2009 and was on unemployment until I found a new job in April 2010. Now I have just recently lost that job. I received a letter saying that I am eligible for extended benefits. I certified for them on the correct day and did not receive any money. My current case with my most previous employer is still under deliberation. Will I still receive the extended benifits for a while regardless of the findings on my current case or are they too subject to that ruling? If they are not can anybody tell me why i received no money after certifying.
All this stuff make my head hurt and any help would be much appreciated.

Of course I want people who just lost their unemployment benefits to continue to get them, but they’ve only been without help for a few days. I haven’t had any assistance since April and as usual they want to help the rich who don’t need it, instead of people like myself who have had no job for 2 1/2 years and no help for almost 9 months! If I don’t end up slitting my wrists, then I’m done voting. Well looks like they are goint to extend the unemployment for us, but, I hear that they are also going to cut the benefits to about half of what we are getting. Which will only put more people on welfare probably. Even though $200 a week is better than nothing, it will still be hard to pay bills and feed your family. I thought they wanted the economy to spend more. Wasn’t that one of the reasons they wanted to extend the benefits? Because the unemployeed are living from check to check and they have to spend their money.

But now that I am working and yes its for minimum wage, but I feel so much better when I get that paycheck deposited in my account. I feel so proud that after 2 years of being unemployed that I could earn it again on my own. But there are those that take advantage of the situation, that I do agree with. just like with food stamps. Get off your butts and find a job. I did and I am in a tiny town. There are jobs out there. Its not beneath you to flip burgers, take out trash, or clean bathrooms or cleaning houses or hotel rooms. When your unemployed living on 500 a week or less then i would say nothing is beneath you. a job is a job, quit taking advantage of the situation. Americans are lazy today. all they want is a freakin hand out.. So how is the job market any better for those who have been laid off longer then those just recent laid off? If the job market was getting better, there would be no recent laid off. So what you are telling me is its suppose to be a flip role now, Those just got laid off cand keep getting unemployment for the next year, those who have been unemployed while the recent unemployed was working now have to go to work, Where are the jobs at, I would love to trade postion with some one, They take my unemployment and i take their job. I was hoping with the extension I would be able to get my 3 kids something for Christmas. I found out today that I have exhausted my claim, and I am not included in the new “extension”. Obama is not the worst thing he has tried this is false and you know. Mistakes the past ten years was the Republicans check your facts not political ploys and anger. America people has to be very ignorant or suddenly blind. The past two yaers was the most filibusters by a party (republicans) in years and years one will be in 2011. It is a shame people (voters) create their own issues. We turned around and vote the same party in that sit back filibustered most of the governing Bills for this country and collected over 200 to 300 paychecks, large vacations while we moan and groan on the party trying to try to govern. Now that the delays, filibusters etc. caused this country to stagnate during this time we blame the other party caused we did not pay attention. I agree Democrats should have voted on other things probably first but you the voters should have paid attention to who was governing instead of listening to negativity, politics to make your decisions. Pay attention check the votes in Congress. Now in 2011 you will pay the price to have the party that sits back and hopes the economy gets better or goes more south for the worse. I vote for governing not to sit and pay someone to vote for just for the wealthy and sit back. And stop the (American people) Bit by Republicans they never talk about the low income enough is enough we have wisen up some of us. This has gone on too long all parties need to govern or all of congress needs clean out of doctors, lawyers etc. and need filled with average day to day american working people. His response was “Why would I go to work when I make just as much on unemployment for doing nothing?”

I tell you that made my blood boil! Again I am all for those who lost their jobs and constantly looking for meaningful employment to receive benefits to take care of themselves and their families, but it is the few like the man I mentioned that makes me upset because he is taking funds from those who really need it.

I live in Colorado and have lost my lifeline, but I don’t want to talk about my problems. It goes way deeper than that! Our government has become the most signifficant downfall in this country. There are 3 things that got this country into the position it is currently in, CORRUPTION, GREED, AND TRUST!
Our country was founded by a few people and these people drafted a document called the constitution of the United States. Since that time politicians have come up with their own ideas of government actually making that a so called cloak to line their own pocket with frofit and leaving the american people to bear the consequence. Afterall, the majority of politicians are LAWYERS.

Mississippi unemployment is in high ranks. I am on my tier four with no job. Still, the Govern of MS use state money for private plane, jets, and luxury trip for pleasure which is called (business trip,.) and now, wants to run for President of the United State. How nice for him to use my money for enjoyment, and I beg for HELP.

It is a shame people believe this about unemployment that you get more to be on unemployment. This is a lie. If you are getting more then the minimum wage has an issue in Ohio etc. There are more who exhausted and fell out of the system now than since this economy started. Your good old Republicans will provide you with the same old poverty jobs for you in 2011 or lower wages in their budget plan of cuts. So get use to it until we wise up but it is a day late and a dollar short the people in this country has not gotten wiser or done thier reasearch! Is anyone going to cut their 200,000 plus salaries and vacations ? This should be the people’s first start of the budget we can not afford to pay those wages it is time to start them on lower wages !

My unemployment benefit year end was December 4th 2010. I filed a new claim and it was denied because I had no more benefits since I have been out of work for a year. When this happened I was on the Tier 2 federal extension. So I guess my question is since I was denied a new claim will I be put back on the Federal Extension since I have not exhausted all extended benefits and if so about how long before I receive back pay?

JASON: yes it was denied on a state level not a federal level. They do that with my husbands too. The State denies it and it falls back on to the federal extension tier you were on.

rich… ok vote Obama out? why? what has he done to you? He is helping people out the best that he can. I was Laid off in 2008 and still have nooo money! I had to beg my family to help me out with debt that I owed. My 53yr old mother lives with me, and she doesn’t work, and nither do I money is extremly low. I have no idea how we are going to live but somehow we gotta make a way for ourselfs. We are moving back to Phiadelphia from IOWA! Iowa is horrible, and the only possible way to get money is if you’re disabled or very old. Wal*Mart is even getting too expensive for our low money. I need a way to get money, a job isn’t agreeing with my age, and if my mother dies (a GODFORBID!) I’m going to be up to my 5f 2in head.

Going to school, and getting a degree is always an option but wher am I going to get the money from to even be in school? My family isn’t going to help because they all have problems of their own, and I’m only 18 which means nothing is really out in the world for me. What is there to do being a Engaged African-American women with no money, and bills coming in like a flock of bird….

If your credit rating is good it shouldn’t be too difficult to borrow some money for education. If you did well in school scholarships are always a possibility. Pick a profession that pays you well, like nursing or physical therapy and you’ll be financially secure for life. Though these professions are unglamorous the pay in metropolitan areas is excellent–nurse practitioners earn almost $100,000 a year.

I live in Michigan. We have this Great Govenor(Just a Joke)
He got the Republican to reduce unemployment to 20 weeks instead of 26 weeks. This way the federal unemployment has to take over faster. This gives the businessman more money to do what? PLAY. All our republicans have done is give the rich breaks but we aren’t seeing any jobs. The rich get richer and the poor get poorer.
Prices of food and gas have gone up but the workers wages haven’t instead the businessman put the profit in his or her pocket to play with no longer caring about his or her worker. Very greedy American bussiness. Keep giving
them (Business) breaks the republican will have us a third
world country. If we’re not there yet.

Bob, I couldn’t have said it better myself and this is often what I explain to my friends and family. Myself, as of July I’ll have been unemployed for 3 years and the last time I got unemployment assistance was April 2010! I’m THE most ignored person in all of the media, a.k.a. a 99er. It’s so simple and so easy to see what the Republicans are trying to do to our economy and it’s painful to sit back and watch Democrats let them do it. Fax, email and write your senators and congressperson everyday like I do. Maybe one of these days they’ll have to listen to us. Find me on Twitter @RepubsRScum if you want to read some Republican hate.
