What does customer service have to do with job searching or careers you might be wondering as you read this.  In this case, just about everything.

Peter Shankman's book Customer Service: New Rules for a Social Media World is written for companies and focused on how they can use social media effectively to engage customers, to provide terrific customer service, and to build an online presence and a brand that works.

Take that concept a step further and it's why this book is a must read for anyone who is job searching or working on boosting their career.  Consider yourself the company and your expertise the product.  Consider, as well, that all the information that's available about you online, what you post on Facebook, what you blog about, and what you tweet all build your brand, for better or worse, and can all enhance (or sabotage) your candidacy for a new job and bolster your credibility as an expert in your field.

This book steps you through the process of using social media the right way - simply, easily, and without spending a whole lot of time.

Besides all that solid advice on what to do online, there's one more tip that everyone should take to heart.  I wrote about finding joy on the job the other day and, if you know me even a little, you'll know how important I think it is to have a job you like or, even better, a job you love - and a job that's fun.

Peter Shankman's final takeaway is about having fun on the job. He writes, "I've said that the goal of social media is to generate revenue.  That's correct. I stand by that. But I also think it's to have fun and enjoy ourselves."

Life is too short, really, to not have fun.  So, take some time to read this book. I promise it won't take too long.  Have fun with social media.  Try out some of the tips, thinking from the mindset that you're a company with a product and you're going to market yourself online.  It'll definitely help promote you - and your career.
