Tier 5 Unemployment

By September 15, 2010

Follow me on:

Senator Debbie Stabenow (D-MI) has introduced the Americans Want to Work Act. This legislation would create an additional tier (Tier 5) of unemployment benefits for those (known as the 99ers) who have exhausted their unemployment insurance benefits.

In addition, the legislation would cut taxes for businesses that hire new workers who have been looking for work. The bill is cosponsored by Senators Charles Schumer (D-NY), Harry Reid (D-NV), Dick Durbin (D-IL), Carl Levin (D-MI), Bob Casey (D-PA), Chris Dodd (D-CT), Sherrod Brown (D-OH), Jack Reed (D-RI), and Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI).

If passed The Americans Want to Work Act will provide 20 additional weeks of unemployment insurance for individuals in states  with an unemployment rate of 7.5% or higher. This new  tier 5 would benefit people who have exhausted all of their benefits, which is 99 weeks in high unemployment states.

In order to receive this tier, individuals would still need to meet regular unemployment insurance law requirements.

The best course of action to help get tier 5 unemployment benefits passed passed is to contact your elected officials and ask them to support a long term extension of unemployment benefits:

How ironic to call a bill that rewards not working with a name like “Americans Want to Work” It should be called “this is for dead beats that think they are too good to take an available job so the want to sit at home and collect charity like a begger Act.”
Money for nothing creates nothing but a bigger problem, look at the native american reservations… I have nothing against native americans, they are victims of an unchecked government handout system.

This administration is doing a great job of making it look like they are working for the lower class when really they perpetuate the problem be enabling it. Give americans a reason to be pround and they will respond, give them the ability to become stagnent and lazy and they will do that too.

(7) Barbara says:

Hell in hand basket, is just what you are! You selfish pig, I will laugh when you lose your job and beg for help! You idiot, it is not just the unemployed who suffer, the families/children and economy suffers as well. If the unemployed were lazy and will not look for work because they are receiving benefits, how do you explain that the 99ers have already used up their extensions six months ago and have nothing to survive? Dumb ass, you think these people would rather starve than work? These people have worked all of their lives and have lost their jobs through NO FAULT of their own. They comply with job search actiivities as well as search independently so why haven’t they obtained jobs after working 20-40 years? That theory of enabling the unemployed to become lazy is out the window since March, 2010 when the benefits ran out!!! Did it ever occur to you that millions of Americans are in the same boat and are not being hired at these lower paying jobs because of their credentials and the employers know that they will leave once the economy has recovered??? It seems that you need an education. I suggest you further your education to make yourself more marketable in the event that you lose your job, which you will very soon. Then, who will be crying? By trying to block Americans from trying to feed their families while they look for work, you are making the matter worse for yourself and everyone else that has been affected by the lack of jobs in America. Get a life, and go see the wizard for a heart and a brain!!!!

(8) Sidney says:

Barbara, I have to agree with you. Today their is no job security nor has their been for years. Anyone can lose their job at the drop of a hot potato. Many of the unemployed simply cannot find jobs; its that simple. I think people that have jobs should be a little bit more understanding and considerate to the less fortunate. After all, we are Americans and should be helping each other out in times of despair. Most people who lost their job had no choice. I see the bridges here full of people trying to survive sleeping under it. Walmart has been kind enough to let people, who live in their car, camp out overnight in their parking lot….these are difficult times, we should help out more!

(9) Susan says:

I am praying that this passes.
I know alot of people who are 99ers and they are really suffering. They need help.
If this does pass, it will give them some financial help and maybe help to give companies incentive to start considering the unemployed for jobs.
It is just terrible that many companies right now are filtering out the unemployed people’s resumes. How do they expect people to find work if they are not even considered for the job ?!?!?!

(10) Kate says:

I have been unemployed for just short of the 99 weeks. I left a newspaper job after 15 years when it downsized. I cannot find a job and I look, and I look. I’m overqualified for most but I’d take what I could get. There’s just very few jobs out there, and those few are going to people who will take minimum wage, and they’re younger. How do you compete with THAT? I’ve had people suggest to me to “go be a yard duty at the school” …and I’m not sure how to respond….. 1) how do I take a minimum wage job that usually consists of 3-4 hours in a split shift and then lose unemployment benefits that barely make ends meet to begin with? I thought I had another point but I guess not. I would love the 5th tier of benefits to be passed because I think if I cannot find a job, maybe I can create one for myself because obviously the traditional methods are not working.

(11) Roy says:

I too hope tier five passes, my family has become fond of eating and having a roof over their heads. However, even though it is paid for, I doubt the Republicans will allow tier five to advance to the house. Their purpose in trying to stop the recent extension had nothing to do with reducing the deficit but it was simply their strategy of opposing anything the Democrats support. It doesn’t matter how many people their antics hurt, it only matters that they oppose the Democrats.

Like I said, I hope and pray tier five passes and soon too but I will believe it when I see it.

I’m @ 97 weeks. I would be truly grateful for an extension. Not sure if I will eventually see the 2 weeks remaining on my claim because all extension benefits have stopped. Can anybody tell me if or when the bill signed by Obama will result in retroactive benefit payouts? This is scary. I have zero income and I’m terrified…I have 18 years sales experience, college degree and always felt confident regarding my career. I cant get a call back from any online search sites! Frustrating times. I know I’m not a lone- I’ll dig ditches for $10 and hr just to pay my rent… SOS!!!

You’re probably milking the system in some way! You transparent Fraud-

Been out of work going on 97 weeks. I am feeling desperate. I can’t even get an interview for most places. I worked for 18 years and got laid off. My background is banking. Banks aren’t hiring and many other places think I am not qualified or over-qualified to even give me a chance. I had a great interview a little over a month ago for a position and was told that company was hiring 20 people. Never heard anything. I called to see why, and the lady told me they never hired ANYBODY from those interviews after all because managment put a freeze on hiring. I am so disappointed, still looking, still dead ends, and I have four kids and a husband that doesn’t make enough to support our bills alone.

(15) M. Moore says:

It is what it is.

The republican party is a collection of hypocrites led by an super ego. I define a hypocrite as one who is governed by a philosophy of what I do is right and what you do is wrong even if you do what I do. I define an ego as the entity in some men who enjoy causing distress in their fellow mankind and happily feed off of the emotional pain their fellow mankind is experiencing .

History has proven the republicans are not concerned about the government budget when it benefits siphoning wealth to their buddies, supporters , constituents , secret societies and business partners. In truth they oppose further unemployment extensions because they foresee less money they can continue to siphon away to themselves to maintain and gain more wealth.

The flaw of all their greed and intelligence is summed up into this upcoming pitfall, Money taken out of the hands of middle class citizens who spend the money to support the economy daily will eventually catch up to them.

Yes unemployment only pays for essentials but overall it still has an effect of keeping dollars circulating in the economy. These dollars eventually cycle themselves up the ladder to the wealthy . Not extending unemployment tier 5 until the economy gets better will eventually effect republicans in the place they cant live without: POFITS IN THEIR POCKETS .

(21) PatriotZ says:

My opinion… SocialC and all still collecting unemployment: calm down, breath. You still have unemployment until 99 weeks. Invalid claim only means you have not worked since first receiving unemployement and therefore do not qualify for a new claim. Extensions are for everyone that has not found a job and still qualifies for unemployment. So an invalid claim is a good thing. Calm down. I am a 99er and have not received anything to live on in months and still cannot find a job. Yet, does that stop the IRS from trying to collect money from me? Nope! I had to explain to 2 different IRS “customer service people” that I do not have a job and no more unemployment and therefore cannot make monthly payments. After repeating myself more than 5 times I was finally told about the IRS’s “not collectible status” and that I qualify. Geeee, thanks IRS! It’s so nice that they will not send their collection dept after me to collect taxes on unemployment benefits. Unemployment money has already been taxed. How dare the IRS tax this money multiple times!!!! Oh, and to everyone that believes the Republicans are to blame for not passing the 5th extension needs a reality check! It is the Progressive Party that is to blame. ALL Progressives are committing TREASON. The progressives need to blame someone so when they finally pass it they are the heroes. Democrats, Republics, Idependents, and all others: please understand that Obama and everyone with any political power in this country right now are NOT Democrats, they are Progressives. Any and all True American Patriots need to wake up and unite against Progressivism and all people at both the state and the federal levels that are Progressives. Read the Constitution. Any True American Patriot no matter the political party, race, religion, or creed is duty bound to uphold and preserve the Constitution and defend the U.S.A. from all enemies both foreign and domestic. Obama is a Radical Progressive. ALL Progessives are committing TREASON. Please Read YOUR Constitution and YOUR Declaration of Independence. When will citizens cry “Revolution”?!

I’ve been on UE since Dec. 2008 stopped getting the extra $25 June 1. My weekly UE check is $240. this is NOT enough to pay rent/util/food etc. I am going thrue my life savings and am only 42. The situation is hopeless beyond belief. there are no secretarial jobs I can apply for/hope to get and the few I have been called in to interview for pay $12/hr. I can’t think of what to do. Having a criminal record (wrongly accused/convicted of assaulting a cop while trying to avoid being arrested for stealing $25 worth of stuff 5 yrs. ago) is NOT helping. I’ve had 3 good interviews and never heard back from employer again, am certain it was due to the felony assault charge, even the State of Ct wont give me a pardon, my word vs. the police who wrote me out on the report that I attempted to run him over. Anyway my Plan B wouldn’t work that is to become a nanny as no-one hire a convicted felon. The worst thing is my police blotter is online still and makes me come across as very violent. Self employment? havnt thought of a single doable idea, my favorite activity is sleeping, can’t make a living off that. Hey ladies if you’ve got a clean record, nanny jobs can pay pretty well ya know esp. a good job if you’re single and can be flexible in hours worked. I wish I had a skill but I don’t, secretarial jobs are gone for good, only thing left is executive assistants or low paying clerical jobs, God forbid you apply to a medical office secretary w/o prior experience. Adding a Tier 5 won’t help me get a job and unless they increase it I certainly cannot live off of UE indefinitely.
Where will it end? What if this is the new normal? How can we live w/o income?

(23) Florida says:

I beat out 20 candidates for a job paying $80K a year. Two interviews. Passed drug screen. I had a property theft record from 30 years ago. Paid $40 in restitution and did probabtion. I ran a check on myself before applying so I would have the details to disclose on my application, which I did.
When the employer ran the background they came up with the same thing, no problem, except…..a incorrect original charge of ARMED ROBBERY filed sometime after the $40 property theft. It was never corrected. Its so old it went from paper, to micrfiche to digital. Somewhere the paper work went off the track. I explained when the employer confronted me with this. But they would not budge. $80 K job lost in this economy.
Common sense would tell you $40 restitution and probation didn”t stem from ARMED ROBBERY. If you can plead that down you got a helluva lawyer.
I have been working on having this 30 year old mistake corrected for over a year now and not making much head way. I have been in the same line of work for over 20 years with glowing reccomendations and referals. Background has been checked before and was never a problem. Doesn’t matter. I am just sick over this. No help from law enforcement, congressman, etc. The lawyer is expensive and it seems no one wants to admit to a mistake as I could possibly file suit. Original Judge has died. The DA I dealt with has since retired and left the state.

Where can you get help ?

Earlene I am in the same boat as you, it has been almost 2 years. I was offered a job 2 weeks after I was laid off and did not accept it because it was exactly half of what I was making on my previous job. If I only knew what was to come. Now almost 2 years later, countless resumes, handshakes, flat tires, running out of gas and only 4 initial interviews and only 1 second interview. I am still unemployed and my last UE check was received April 2 also. I am so stressed and panicked I don’t know what to do. My savings is gone and school is about to start. I am a widow aged 35-40. I no longer have gas, only electricity and water. Gas is a luxury we can no longer afford. What really ticks me off is when people say I don’t want to work. I can’t sleep or I only sleep 3 hours a day at best I just had to get that off my chest. So who ever thinks people want to live like this, hopefully this will not happen to you.

(25) Hoosier In Dispair says:

I lost my job in Feb 2009 and have since had no luck in securing reasonable employment (that would make paying for daycare for my two young children PLUS actually having income left over).

The fear that this will DISCOURAGE people from actually looking for jobs probably only applies to a SMALL percentage of those of us on unemployment.

I very much, wish to be employed. It’s just that there aren’t jobs out there that are in close enough proximity that pay well.

If the people passing this bill were in the same boat as those of us unemployed for an extended period, they would probably see things in a different light. Worrying about how to come up with food, money to pay utilities, school supplies, etc, is NO FUN.

So, please everyone reading this, call them and tell everyone you know to do the same. If we pull together on this we can get it changed!

Thank you have a blessed day!!

Like most of you, I had never received any governmental assistance and was extremely grateful to have received unemployment.

At 57, companies won’t even look at me for a position. I am too young to retire but too old for a company that is now only looking for younger individuals.

How sad is that!

Tier V would be so helpful. I send a minimun of 15 resumes out a week and have had MAYBE 3 interviews in the last year and a half.

If Tier V does occur, how would we be able to apply for it?

I agreed with Maureen (Comment # 37)

I am also 54 yrs old and I find it very hard to get a job. Recently through the help of an old friend, I was given the opportunity for an interview where the offer is $15 dollars an hour which I am willing to take. Figure that this is 200% less than what I use to take home, and for your information, I was told that the great advantage of this economy from the company interviewer was that they are able to get better caliber of personnel for a lot cheaper. Is this what american have become to be? I supposed that a lot of idiots out there think they are on top of the world. Brace yourself as we are heading and be part like other third world country.

I’m an honest person, so even if I had taken an odd job, I certainly would’ve reported the total of about $150 per job that I was paid.

I have applied to so many jobs (in person/online), few responses and only a couple of actual interviews. I feel overqualified, under experience for some jobs and asking for too much salary!?! I have worked since I was 16 years old. Currently I am a single, 37 year old mother of a 6 year old little boy. I held my last job at a hospital for 9 years. I have read many comments on the unemployeement issues at hand. It is upsetting to me that many are seen by others as people that choose not to work. I can assure you that is not the case with me. As well as the many fighting ” the good fight” to avoid becoming homeless as well. I have made good of my time to the best of my abilities. I have been in school for a year almost and looking for work. But the question is there, will I be able to find employeement once I am licensed? Teir 4 runs out for me on Sept. 2010. So I will loose the roof over my sons head and still will have a month left of school to complete. How much farther are we expected to stretch ourselves before we loose everything. I really feel it should be extended in 2010. To help all those who work so hard to help themselves during this difficult economic time. If not, I feel unemployeement will be one worry. But homeless Americans will be on the rise soon.

Thank you for your time…

PatriotZ – you are right on! I’d like to see a revolution in this country. As the numbers of UE increase (as we saw today Aug 12), the worse the economy will get. Washington is without a clue. It will take months for a Tier 5. Most politicians including local, state, and federal are worthless. This country is in a depression or the likes it.

I have read a lot of report here on unempolyment lost and the head ache it can bring. The bird brain that wrote a letter against us is stupid and out of his mind. By the way he is a republican you know, love to meet him in a dark alley somewhere. He need a lesson or two. I just pass my 99s week as well. haven’t receive nothing since last two weeks june 2010. I lost everything including my wife who kick me out of the apartment we stay in to let her son move back home and help her. No friends and no where to go. I just got some what good new, no not a job, but a change to go back to work at my old firm. They refile against me on unemployment from 2008, saiding they never got a notice that I was receiving unemployment under their Insurance claim. We went before the haering refree and she rule in my favor. The company fired me saiding I has no lic. to work. but the state made them prove it. Good! I won and now what can I do to a company who fired me from 2008 to now.

I hope the tier 5 is passed. I’m a 99er been out since April 16th. I will be making my house payment on Monday the 16th that will exhaust all my money that I had saved. All my unemployment checks went to my house payments and car. My wife still works but won’t be able to keep up. I just keep thinking whats going to be taken first my house or car. I apply for jobs every day but the employers have their pick of the crop with so many looking. I thought I was qualified in many different areas but don’t get any reponses. I also think with the money taken out of our hands not spending it for food, elec, phone, going to the stores soon they will be laying off too. Don’t understand how thats helping by pulling the rug from under all of us.

54 yrs. old, place of employment closed after nearly 20 yrs, in Feb. 2009, gave us 2 weeks notice of the closing, only 2 of the 5 employees have found a job, worked for Census last year and this year, whole operations for both years lasted about 1 month.
have applied to everything but fast food joints (who I’m told cater to teen & college students).
I was a respected worker and gave my all, yet trying to find a new job in a different field, I’m getting I’m too old for the job. The jobs in my age group are taken, they stay until they want to leave.
My unemployment is almost done too, I only make $132 a week, that pays the utilities for my home a month. I hate when people write in and call us lazy and only wanting to collect a check. I’ve worked for almost 35 years at sme sort of job. This does nothing for my self-esteem to not even be granting an interview. I was hoping I’d run into someone who needed to hire me when doing the Census, all I got was I hope you find a job soon from them.
Passing a tier 5 would be great for me and others trying to find a job that’s not out there and help keep us afloat a little longer.

This is the first I’m hearing about a possible Tier 5…if it is in the works, my house will probably be in foreclosure by the time Congress decides to actually work instead of taking yet ANOTHER vacation break. I was laid off in Feb. ’09 and have been relentless in my job search. I’ve had many good interviews, but I’m absolutely certain that employers want younger people. I have 37 years experience in law, have worked for many major law firms and two in-house judges. I CANNOT believe that after a lifetime of service to legal services that I will be kicked to the street 10 yrs. before retirement. It is dispicable that WE are made to pay for this economic depression when we had nothing to do with it!!! Yes, I’m ready for a freakin’ revolution all right…I’m mad as hell and I’m not gonna take it!!!!

I’ve been out of work since early November 2009 (40 weeks). I’m a single mom with a daughter and have never been in a situation like this. I’ve worked consistently since I was 16 and now I’m unemployed for the first time and am having a really hard time handling it. I’m applying for jobs of course but have only been contacted by insurance companies that want to hire me to be an agent but I can’t take the chance of a commission only job when I have my child to think of. I need to have something that has a base pay that I can count on. Commission only jobs aren’t fairing as well as they used to and it’s like playing russian roulette.

I don’t think anyone should come on this message board and put people down saying they’re deadbeats or taking advantage of the system, it’s not right and it’s not founded by the ones who do it.

I pray for everyone in the unemployment “dire straits”, it’s horrible and mentally taxing. I myself have really taken a hit to my self confidence. I especially pray for the 99r’s and the people who can’t quite retire yet who are turned down because of age discrimination….yes it is out there.

Fantastic. I have 2 workers who have been on unemployment until I hired them not show up for work today. No calls. Will not return my calls/texts. In 3 years with my current employer, I have had too many employees “quit” (I put in quotations because they just quit showing up & don’t tell me anything) to count. Then, more times than not, they file for unemployment. After they quit, and still are able to draw in some instances. Gotta love our system and our Americans who WANT to work.

Hell in a handbasket, You are a fool! Do you think I like taking home half of what I was? I have a 20 month old daughter and I am no longer receiving unemployment because I’m a 99′er. I look for work all the time, and do you know what I hear? I’m over qualified, well of course I’m over qualified for a $10 and hour job, but I need it!! I have zero income right now. My husband also lost his job and has returned to school to hopefully get something that we can live on when he gets out in December! I can’t take my daughter anywhere because I have to save my gas for interviews. I can’t get food stamps because I have to many assets, I’m about to lose my assets very soon! I have worked since I’m 19. I didn’t start a family until I was secure. I lost my job when I was 7 1/2 months pregnant and my husband lost him when I was 5 months pregnant. Tomorrow, I’m going to hock my mother’s wedding ring so I can get diapers. So, F*** you hell in a handbasket! I will not wish you the same fate as me, because it will only come and bite me in my A**! I need this extension BAD!!! As I type this I have tears coming down my face and my little girl just took her blanket and wiped my tears. I did nothing to deserve this!! I also tried that emergency help for needy families. They will help me look for work and help with daycare, which is in the ghetto and the people who run them I wouldn’t trust a stray dog there never mind my only child. I don’t need help looking for work, I just need work period!!

(64) Shannon says:

Greetings everyone,

Guess I’ll share my unfortunate story with you all..

I was one of those people who was never out of work since the age of 16.. After HS, I went to a community college, followed by a tech school for computers.. During this time, I worked at places like Ocean Spray, Sears, and an amusement park..

When I finally received my certificates, I sent many resumes out, including a local Hospital.. Within a couple weeks, I received a few emails from employers requesting an interview and was elated to see I actually had a choice of which job I wanted to pursue.. I chose the local hospital over the others.. The interview went great and I got the job! The starting pay was pretty good for an entry level computer tech/help desk coordinator position. Not to mention I received an additional 12% for working 3rd shift and an extra $1.25 an hour for working weekends..

Well, things were going great for me until 2008. Then I began to hear rumors that there will be a bunch of layoffs soon.. I didn’t think I’d be one of them. I was the youngest in the department at the time at age 29, the healthiest and fittest by a longshot, and I worked the shift no one else wanted to work. I seriously did not think I’d be laid off,, but in the 3rd week of September of 2008, I was one of the many unfortunate people laid off. There was at least 150 people who got laid off from the hospital, and around 50 people took an early retirement.. 20% of the workers in the hospital were gone, but none from administration or the board were let go of course..

Anyway, I’ve been out of work since September 24th 2008. I’ve sent out countless resumes, even applied at places locally and not one call back.. I’m only 31 years old and can’t get a full time job.. I was making 756 dollars from unemployment every two weeks so I wasn’t about to go working for minimum wage somewhere at maybe 15-20 hours a week. That would be pretty dumb. I was shooting for a position similar to what I was making for unemployment. Now, I have no money coming in as of august 5th but I do have some cash saved in my bank account I can live off of for a little while.

But I’m beginning to freak out. Once my life savings are depleted, I’m royally screwed.. Even If I take a 15-20 hour a week, 7.50 – 8 dollar an hour job “if i can find one” I still won’t make enough to pay my bills and put food on the table..Bringing home 140 dollars a week is below poverty level.

Anyway,I just called unemployment today to see If I qualify for the new extension. I know I’m 97 weeks but I can’t get a hold of anyone to talk to right now to see if i qualify.. I’m still confused as to what exactly the 99 weeks pertains to.. I had heard 99 weeks is the maximum someone can collect unemployment, but does that also include the EB Benefits? I collected the EUC up until 3 months ago and I’m not sure if the EB is in the same category as the EUC. I figured you cant collect more than 99 weeks from the EUC, If that’s the case, then I should be ok for another 12 weeks since I collected the EB “extended benefits” for 3 months…

If I don’t qualify, I hope this new bill passes very soon. I’m taking care of my mother, who has a serious medical illness, and won’t be able to do so much longer.. She will be on the streets along with myself If something isnt done soon..

Now I somewhat understand why certain people have to revert to stealing.. If there aren’t enough jobs going around for everyone to survive, how far will a normal joe go to provide for his/her family? They won’t let them starve, so when there’s no money, they have to do what they have to do to survive..

The government either truly doesn’t understand this, or they just look the other way. It’s a shame.

been accepted if you don’t receive a check within 10 days please call our office well I did, they said don’t call anymore your benefits have exhausted. But I called any way Marvin said the same thing but I never called them back. After 4 months I recived a letter saying please stop reporting your benefits have ran out. I kept calling so they would know I havn’t found found a job yet. You hear on the news all the time unemployment is down thats because over a million of us have lost benefits they don’t say anything about that we have zero money coming in. I don’t understand they send billions to other countries when something happens but don’t take care of the people in their own back yard. To me the are turning their backs on us. It’s different when you got a pay check coming every week they need to be in our spot to get a good picture what were going through.

At this time you must contact your Gov’t Rep’s and tell them to support this legislation. I’ve given up on any of the Republicans except maybe the Gals from Maine. They’ve banded together like a high school clique with the same narrow minded approach to their world view. Nothing we can do about that… until November.

Hang tough, try to be positive for the future, and lead by example.

(71) Harry says:

An Open Letter to ALL True Americans –
I have done nothing wrong. I have worked my entire life, paid taxes, taught children, and saved the lives of three human beings.
I was let go from my place of employment over 99 weeks ago. I have gone through my savings since my unemployment has run out. I have sold anything of value, that would help me to survive, that I owned. I am one month from living in my car just as winter comes.
I have been turned away from several fast food places, department stores, and small gift and card shops being told that not only was I over qualified but I would get bored and quit. These people do not know me. In this job market it is the hiring party who has masses of people from whom to choose. I WANT to work. I have ALWAYS worked. I need to work for more than just a salary.
To ALL of those in Congress who believe that the long term unemployed should take drug tests before our checks are issued or who believe that creating a Tier 5 and/or a Tier 6 if necessary, would cause us all to live off the government and discourage us from looking for jobs, YOU ARE CATEGORICALLY MISTAKEN!!! There are NO jobs to find!
Also you seem to have forgotten that YOU work FOR ME!! My taxes have paid your, quite large, salaries. My VOTE is what put you where YOU are now. You are required to do what is in the BEST INTERESTS OF YOUR CONSTITUENTS, NOT WHAT YOU BELIEVE TO BE YOUR OWN PERSONAL OPINION. Of the millions of long term unemployed who desperately NEED a Tier 5 over 95% are highly educated and currently uncompensated. They are not addicted to any substances nor are they out to live off of the government.
We are a group of people who have done everything correctly and have been told by our government that we do not matter; more than that we do not exist. We are no longer counted as unemployed and we are not counted as employed. We have disappeared as far as our own country is concerned.
An economy cannot survive by putting a roof on a building with no walls. The people who need this help are the ones who would boost the economy now by spending in stores, restaurants, purchasing consumables, and consumer goods. There should be no bailout of banks or sending enormous amounts of money to OTHER countries BEFORE helping our own citizens! Especially now with the “Hindenburg Effect” looming over the Stock Market. If this should come to pass the current economic crises would far surpass ANYTHING this country has ever seen. Our population has grown considerably since the 1930’s. You would do well to remember this!
Our country was founded with the proviso that, “Should a government fail to govern it is the responsibility of its citizens to rise up and change the government.”
Those of you who have been put into power by those of us who currently need your help would do well to remember for whom you work, and just to whom your first responsibility falls.
We are not a bunch of free loaders who want a free ride from the government. However the fact that we NEED this at this current time is something that MUST be done. You MUST guarantee that we will get enough weeks to make into March, 2011 so that we will have a fighting chance at getting ANY job. There are millions of us across this country and every month thousands more join us. Just this month 500,000 more people became unemployed. We are the invisible highly educated and uncompensated!
Thank You!

I am amazed our government is readily at the beck and call of other nations needing a hand out. At corporations that mishandled their finances and requested bailouts. At funding idiotic projects that pacify some campaign funder or lobbiest. I personally don’t care if their is a “minority” of those on unemployment who are taking advantage of the system! A majority are hard working (if they had jobs available), and want to work, get paid a fair wage, and to maintain what they have. And, they paid taxes and other fees to the government. Oh, by the way, some of these unemployed people will more than likely never collect their social security that they’ve been paying into because the program is “broke!” So, Congress should not even give it a second thought! Pass as many tiers as it takes for each person to find work. Call it what you will….there are “frauds” in every walk of life! Not everyone is sitting at home being lazy and irresponsible….and really, the working who lost their job due to no fault of their own should be given the help needed to rebound. PASS THIS BILL CONGRESS…TAKE CARE OF OUR OWN FIRST!

I ‘ve had many different jobs through out the years seems like when I found the right place they would close or move out of the country. But I ‘ve always paid Federal,State,City taxes,Property taxes every year, which has amounted to a great deal of money. And all I’m worth is 99 weeks for 30 plus years of hard work. This is the first year I could’nt pay my property taxes on time which goes up every year, I guess it’s for pay increases and bonuses to state and federal officals. I’m like Harry on comment 69 selling things in my house that I worked so hard to get anything of value is being sold just to keep up ,when thats gone it will be a matter time before another American will be flushed down the drain.
The latest report is that 500,000 more unemployment claims were filed last week BELIEVE ME thats just the start with thousands reaching the 99 week limit. Taking that money from them and those already beyond that point will cause more and more company cut backs due to massive drop in store sales. Not to mention the Fourclosures, Car repo’s. I hope things change and everybody makes it through, but with the Rep and Dem’s never ending conflicts it’s hard to see the light at the end of the tunnel. Maybe will see each other at one of the tent cities.

I have just read everyone’s comments & I totally agree that comments made by Hell in a Hand Basket were uncalled for and so untrue. To make such comments when people are already down & out is certainly not Christian. Hope you never have to know what it is like to lose a job after being employed at the same place for almost 43 years, having never been laid off in all those years & also having been a good & dedicated worker. It is difficult for even younger people to find jobs so us older workers, who have paid into the FUTA for so many yearsl, should be able to get help now that we need it. I didn’t ask to lose my job so I certainly don’t think any of us deserve to be accused of being lazy. Good luck to all of us in our job search. Pay no attention to remarks made by someone so ignorant as Hell in a Hand Basket.

I would willing sacrifice my body to work instead of taking tier 5 but i wouldnt turn it down becuase i know that once i lose my permanent adress, well that puts my chances to zero for finding a job. So Hell in a handbasket let me ask you this what have you done that would make you have the right to critize and call us lazy. Have you ever even tried to be productive to society or your country?

He has had a total of 5 face to face interviews and countless rejections before getting to that point. Oh and lets not forget the countless applications going into the black hole with no response. He was even been turned down for a security guard job paying $8 per hour! I used to think he was doing something wrong, but it appears everyone is in the same boat. I was recently told that my job is on the chopping block, I will hold on with all my might and pray it will be spared. God help us all…YES T5 would be very much appreciated. Oh, and to the “hell in a bread basket” person and anyone else that thinks people on unemployment are lazy, you are idiots!!!!!!!

How Does God Feel About Tier 5 ?
Republicans, Democrats, Libertarians, the Tea Party, Liberals, Conservatives.

All of these groups say we are a nation under God.

All of these groups claim they believe in God.

All of these groups claim God is on their side.

All of these groups are debating the 99er’s and tier 5.

So I started thinking, how God might feel about the 99ers and tier 5.

If God created the heavens and the earth, he must have a handle on this.

I have been unemployed since Sept. 2008, I am 6 years away from retirement age, and I thought I was going to be in good shape, but I have used all my savings and cannot find a job. If unemployment does not continue, my family will be like many others, on the streets and hungry, does this sound familiar? Too many non responses from job applications, and too many “over qualified” or “under qualified”, how about I am willing to work!!!!! Please approve extension so that people like me can continue to try and find work and not be living in the streets where you really cannot find a job because you have no address!!!!

I have been unemployed for almost a year now. For those of you who think we are lazy and would rather be sitting at home rather than work you are sadly mistaken. I must have applied at every position I have seen online, the fact of the matter is, when you have a college degree, no one want to hire you. All the hiring managers are worried that I would leave once a better position comes along, or that I may just do a better job at his or her position and take his or her job away.

Hey “Hell in a Basket”, I’m sure I can do your job better than you. How about we trade places?

Hi All: I am in my 50′s having been out of work since Nov 2008. I was getting 350 on unemployment. But thought since I couldn’t find a full time job would take a part time job. I loved what I was doing but when they found out I was still receiving some benefits my hours were cut. I also found another job and was let go. And another. I didn’t work long enough anywhere to qualify for unemployment. I am now receiving half of what I was getting. I look for jobs till I’m blue in the face. They say you have to know someone in a company to get in. I have taken classes at the technical college to help me get a job. I’ve had interviews on the phone and nothing. They say it isn’t age. Oh yes it is. A male friend of mine who is in manufacturing was just applying for a job and two younger people were there told him to leave because they would get the job not him. He could probably run the whole company. I go to networking groups, you name it I’ve done it. Something’s got to change. It’s scary. I have neighbors with bachelor’s degrees out of work. I want to work and love to work. I like meeting people. I want to feel useful again. Thanks for letting me vent.

What’s America Made Of?
Were you to pose the question, of what’s America made?
I’d say that we the people, stand together, strong, but frayed.
We’ve fought for those unable, not to conquer or control.
Not impose on them, our ways, but give back, what others stole.
Our freedom, bought by others, payed for, with so many tears.
For their honor, struggle we, since four score and seven years.
Not so much, from whence we came, immigrants all, we once were.
Rather should we question, why? All ill wishers, to deter.
For our kindness and our laws, what we love may come undone.
Should we fail to remember, September 2001.
For those who’d come for better, will there always, be a place.
Beware, any saboteur, will reveal a diff’rent face.
Things we often have to do, may unjust, at first appear.
Thankful for the USA, but for they, we now are here.
We’ve no imposed religion, happyness may you pursue.
But should our ways contradict, then your country waits for you. you.
Fifty great states united, under one flag, flying high.
Our constitution written, for the people, of and by.
The symbols of our nation, stand for all that’s fair and just.
Our flag, red white and blue and the words “In God We Trust”.
Eleven score, fourteen years, since our fathers did decree.
That we equal, are all men, we the people, still are free.
Ask not, of America, but instead, what can I do?
To ensure none died in vain, for the freedom given you.
So long as we draw breath, we won’t ever go away.
To protect and persevere, please, God bless the USA!!
Let freedom ring, no harm come, this great nation we so love.
Abundance, pride, our hope and faith, is what America’s made of.

(100) Martin says:

It’s apparent that you are either employed or a business owner. It’s also obvious you have no clue wtf you’re talking about. Millions of once gainfully employed Americans are now jobless some for 2 or more years. 2 years ago, our family income was $150,000/year. Both my wife and I worked 50-60 hours a week, and it was worth it because we could save for our daughter’s education, vacations and our retirement. We were both corporate employees and NEITHER one of us collected and unemployment check in the 33 years in corporate life. I have been unemployed for nearly 2 years (accounting), having been replaced by software and clerks. My wife had been a buyer, manager and catalog supervisor for 3 MAJOR corporations. Now our yearly TAXABLE unemployment income is a combined $48,000. We can’t save for our daughter’s education, our retirement and barely pay for our mortgage, utilities and food. The hundreds of resumes we sent out has resulted in my wife’s working PART-TIME at Lowes for $10/hour no benies. I was lucky enough to temporary work for 3 months @ $18/hr; $23/hr LESS than I made when I was let go. Each of us has been interviewed no less than 15 times over the months, but people are reluctent, to hire a 61 yo man, or a 58 yo woman. After my prostate surgery and recovery, I’m going back to college to reinvent myself. But, you’re right, my wife and I are lazy, good-for-nothing deadbeats who are thrilled to be collecting unemployment benefits so we can lose our home we worked for 2.5 decades to buy; so, our daughter will be burdened with a $100K in school loans; so we can spend our retirement collecting carts at the local supermarket. It’s been a lovely 20+ watching everything we once owned and saved dwindle to ZERO. Da**it basket, if only we weren’t so effin lazy. So, basket, to quote the Greek philosopher, Ickyomeus Herculeum of Amarynthos, “You can kiss my deadbeat tushie, nitwit.”

I’m forced to begin early social security thanks to our apathetic government. Although, I’m a registered Democrat, I feel Sen Boxer (D) has thumbed her nose at the unemployed and I will vote Republican in November. Which they voted in to cover their butts if something happened. They will not go through hard times or feel helpless like all of us 99ers do, wondering where our next meal is going to come from or paying the bills and getting cars or homes taken. Thats why nothing has been said about the tier 5 extension as long as they are living good the life. The heck with caring for anyone else. It’s going on five months since my last check. I had a job enterview two week ago the employer made me feel with the great deal of experience I had it was almost a sure thing, but still no word I pray I get this job even though it’s part time I’d be as happy as a gopher in soft dirt. Great! Now how do we get money into the hands of the disenfranchised people who have exhausted their 99 weeks and are highly educated but uncompensated through no fault of their own? These people have sold everything of value they owned and have gone through any savings they had. As far as The United States of America is concerned these people do not even exist. They are not on the roles of the employed, neither are they on the roles of the unemployed! They do not exist. They are invisible. They are losing their homes and rental domiciles. Their children are being uprooted. All of this because the Republicans think they are slackers and want to live off of the government. The economy has not recovered. These people number in the millions. Mr. Bernanke has said that the economy is very fragile and if people stop spending we will slide back into a more severe recession. Well with zero income there is zero chance to spend. What are these people supposed to do? Many are living on the streets or in their cars. The suicide rate has increased. This way of living extremely reduces one’s chance of finding employment. None of these people wish to live off of the government and would take any work they can find. However they are told over and over and over again that they are overqualified for the job for which they are applying. With so many people unemployed employers will employ whomever they wish and whomever they can pay the least to. This is crazy in the wealthiest country in the free world! We MUST help our own citizens before any money leaves this country to help foreign economies. SOMEONE in the Congress MUST HAVE THE COURAGE TO FIGHT FOR THESE INVISIBLE CITIZENS WITHOUT THE ABILITY TO FIGHT FOR THEMSELVES. These people still have their vote, which they will use in November. The person who brings their plight and the vote for a TIER FIVE to the forefront will get the votes of these millions of invisible citizens!

I know how to pay for tier 5

It is simple, and give jobs back to Americans. All we have to do is Fine People like this who hire them.

Former Secretary of State Colin Powell says illegal immigrants do essential work in the U.S. and he has firsthand knowledge of that — because they fix his house.

Powell, a moderate Republican, urged his party Sunday to support immigration generally because it is “what’s keeping this country’s lifeblood moving forward.”

Anyone who hires ilegals should pay very hevey fines.. This aloan will more than pay for tier 5
Also it will open up Jobs for Americans..

(125) Mad in the USA says:

just read this at examiner.

Ed Schultz: Sen. Stabenow will bring The Americans Want to Work Act to the Senate floor next week.

While Sen. Stabenow expects Republicans to block the bill, it’s possible that there may be enough Republican support to move the bill forward for a voice vote and debate. Ed Schultz was told that the Democrats will argue vigorously for passage. According to Donalee King

The ranks of 99ers are growing dramatically each week. According to my calculations, using an Economic Policy Institute graph supplied to the House Ways and Means Committee on long-term unemployment, each week there are 91,000 new 99ers. That’s 91,000 people who are, in many cases, losing their only means of paying rent, utilities and transportation. Joblessness is a national emergency and it needs to be treated that way by both Democrats and Republicans. If the Democrats bring The Americans Want to Work Act to the floor of the Senate next week, it’s quite likely that most 99ers, for their own good, would now vote for congressional Democrats. Can 99ers swing the election for the Democrats? That’s to be seen, but my guess is an emphatic, YES!

What are we to do the rent is due the electric is due the water is due but there is no money due to he got his last unemployment chck last week . So tire 5 ( the 99) club we are in it all the way . The President has to do something or at least pass this bill and try to open jobs that people know how to do , not everyone can go back to school due to past student loans and such. This is my husbands 2 time being laid off he held a job for 8 months and as i said just got his last unemployment check last week . and the rent –water–electric is due by the 1st what will we do AND HOW LONG DO WE HAVE TO WAIT BEFORE HEARING IF TIER 5 PASSES

(128) Christine says:

A Tier 5 (additional 20 weeks) will not pass. Stabenow brought up the S3607 bill (a political ploy for votes) late on Wednesday, Sept 29 and then left (cSpan). It was not discussed or addressed. Have to wait until November to see if there will be further action on it. I urge all folks NOT to vote. Both parties are corrupt, Obama is a weak president and does not know what’s going on with the UE except to say “I know there’s a lot of folks hurting.” This is despicable and I find it odd that there are not thousands of comments related to this topic on about.com!

September 30, 2010 at 11:38 am
(129) Congress (Democrats) Abandoned Us says:

Stabenow pulled an Obama-she just tossed the idea up there and left without even supporting it herself. Just mumbled and left. Then the Democrats (who have the majority) voted to leave early for vacation. From Yahoo news: “Some Democrats facing particularly tough re-election fights joined Republicans in protest, saying Congress should stay in session and get more done before facing voters Nov. 2″

Congress is closed for business. There will be no vote. If you’re a 99 it’s time to give up on getting a good/decent job right now and take two (or three) lousy jobs to survive.

My 99 ran out MONTHS ago. I fell into the trap of not accepting crappy jobs because I knew there would be more extensions-so I just hung out. I have two college degrees (graduated with Honors!!!) and didn’t want to take a lame job. Now, even the crappy jobs are gone. There was a waitress/waiter job (here in Michigan) and on the news they said that on the first day over 400 people applied. I doubt they’d hire someone with even a single college degree.

Obama’s wrong: education is NOT the answer: if you have a degree you won’t get hired; and if the job requires a degree then the company will hire someone (a foreigner) with a B2 Visa because they work for 1/3 of the salary, have the degree, and are very controllable because if they lose the job they get deported. Our whole computer/IT department (before we were laid-off) was slowly replaced by foreigners from India with B2 Visas who were all living together in a rented house-dozens of Americans (with Masters and Doctorates in things like computer science, computer linguistics, etc.) lost their jobs.

September 30, 2010 at 11:48 am
(130) Congress Abandoned Us says:

Also, now that the tax cuts will not be voted on the employers will pay higher taxes. BE CLEAR: when an employer (you know, the ‘evil’ corporations the Democrats hate) pay higher taxes they make up the difference by LAYING OFF MORE PEOPLE! Duh! When you raise taxes on employers-people lose their jobs.

Why does Obama raise taxes on junk food? To have less junk food. Why does Obama raise taxes on alcohol and cigerettes? To have people smoke and drink less-and to have the USA-based Hav-a-tampa factory close (more Americans out of work). Why does Obama raise taxes on jobs? The only logical conclusion is to have less jobs? That’s the result.

So expect more lay-offs and even less hiring to take place because the Democrats (who completely control Congress and don’t need a single Republican vote to pass anything!) decided to take their vacation early this week.

Kohls and ToysRus are opening new stores and hiring holiday temp workers. Don’t waste your life waiting for more extensions which will never come. Neither political party will pay you to sit on your @ss anymore.

(131) Doug says:

Hmmmm, sit on our @ss?? Well, maybe a minority of those unemployed do, but the majority don’t! It’s funny how the politicians take things for granted when most of them are fairly wealthy and don’t have many worries other than getting elected to another term. What a game! And, we are their players! Wake up America!!! Congress votes to go on vacation early? Wow, in my world…if the job wasn’t finished, my boss would never allow vacation time until it was in his best interest to do so! I guess our elected officials don’t feel that “WE ARE THEIR EMPLOYER, THEIR BOSS, AND THAT THERE ARE THINGS IN THIS COUNTRY IN NEED OF THEIR ATTENTION AND VOTES….PERIOD!” And, as their employer, the JOB is NOT finished! A congressman should not be treated any different than those on the front lines of this country who work their talls off making enough to put a loaf of bread upon their tables. Accountability people! Congress has the responsibility to the American people…a “sworn oath” to us to act in our best interests! Some of you 99′s have paid your share of taxes, unemployment insurance tax, social security tax, and medicare/medicaid tax…should I go on? What this congress or any other congress in the future needs is a reality check. This coming November, you can send a message to our politicians that vacations are not allowed during times of crisis! As for an extra tier 5 for those in need, I’m all for it. It makes me ill to think congress quickly acts to aid other countries in need, saying if we don’t, we might not get their cooperation when we need it. Hmmmmm, now that’s funny, because when it comes to this congress getting the cooperation of voters in the upcoming election, they just might not GET IT!! GET IT….CONGRESS? A congress taking any vacation when the country is still in economic crisis, fragile, and in a so-called recovery period, has no business taking time off.

Hey get this crazy place I live in the families here like to photo their dead in a casket. Yes there is money to be made in pics of the dead. NO JOKE. NO more big weddings and all the rich are in CA and they will fall into the ocean. Get a job with a chapter 7 on my credit report. Yeah that won’t happen. I need the tier 5 to keep my house. I have lost everything else they could get out of me. No insurance new health bills mounting. They should just line us over 50′s up and shoot us. We are just a pest begging for food with a prospective employer. I got my sign ready for the street corner will work for food. The GVT is scaring us for their own agenda’s.

I am one that has been out of work of and on, I recently had to leave two jobs (part-time) because of a auto accident that occured. I am drawing unemployment and I am going on the third tier. It was brought to my attention that if the next extention is not passed I will be ****out of luck! I am not one who sit back and expect a handout, I have been given the opportunity to get my life back together after struggling with numerous drug addictions and 5 years in prison that gave me the time to change my thinking and behaviors. I am willing to work don’t get me wrong, but at this moment I am trying to get myself back together from the accident that happen recently. And the exstention of tier 5 will help me to keep a float until I find employment again. I don’t want to ever live the way I had come acustom to in the past. I’m just asking for alittle help until I can help myself, it that not too much to ask.

With my RN I will have more job opportunities but I need the extension to complete the necessary courses and time to sit for my boards. When is congress suppose to decide if this extension will be made available to us? If someone has this information out there please let me know….

October 21, 2010 at 12:22 pm
(147) James says:

I tend to believe that most of the people who need tier 5 unemployment benefits WOULD rather work than not. At the same time I’m equally certain that there are some who don’t want to work. I can’t imagine anyone being content let alone happy with getting unemployment instead of whatever you made when you were employed. I don’t believe that the unemployment is set up to pay people more than what they made.

I think we need to consider another element of the equation. If we don’t provide the extension we are going to have people that are absolutely desperate. Desperate people do things that they would not normally do. I’m not talking about jobs either. I’m talking about crime. Let’s consider this. While the extension would cost something like 3 billion dollars I believe we’ve overlooked something. Of that money, most of it gets put right back into the economy almost immediately. That’s better than what some of the other stimulus programs have done. The people who will get this unemployment money aren’t going to put it into the IRA’s. They are going to pay their bills, and buy necessities. That money will help the economy. Grocery stores, laudry mats, gas stations, auto insurance (important) and so many othe things that we all pay on a regualr basis. Without the extension, those things won’t be paid and the economy will suffer even more.

So, as much as we may be opposed to this idea of another extension, I think we ought to look at it for it is. A good way to infuse cash into the economy quickly.

(148) Sharon says:

I think all of us who are unemployed need to march on Washington! It’s a shame election day is so close, Monday, even Tuesday would be an ideal day to send a message! Even if just 1% of us showed up that would be almost 150k people. If no further extension are passed after November, and if no Tier 5 is implemented, I agree with James we are going to see despair and probably a depression! And I also agree desperate people do desperate things and if no extensions are passed after November, there are going to be alot of desperate people in the United States, so you better watch out Hell in a hand basket if you think things are bad now!

I have been unemployed a little over a year, I apply for jobs everyday when new opportunities exist. I’ve had a few follow ups and interviews, but in most cases I don’t even know if my resume has been looked at. Trust me, I would much rather have a job than to be doing these non-acknowledged job applications everyday! I’d even be willing to work for the amount that I am receiving from unemployment each week, even a bit less for that matter just to feel security again, and it would be a lot less than what I made at my most recent job! So to all of those who say we want handouts, please shut the h&*# up, as you don’t know what you are talking about and I can only hope that one day you are in a similar position!

One thing we need to do is to severely limit all imigration to the United States until we get our job situation under control. If this means 5-10 years so be it. We need to take care of those who are US citizens before we worry about letting those from other countries come and take our resourses. We need to stop letting the immigrants in to do the work that we who are unemployed could do. There is no reason to give green cards to those from India, China, etc to take jobs that could be given to American citizens! And on top of that drain other resources that could be given to American Citizens! Enough already!

I have since then, had to sell my house, had a divorce, and an living in a small rental off my savings. Luckily I had some savings. My unemployment ran out last March. I am trying to freelance and hopefully will be able to get something out of that. If not, I don’t know. My savings are gone, and my 20 year old son lives with me. He works a few odd jobs, but not enough to pay the bills. This economy, has destroyed my life as I knew it. Now there are no funds to help me.. what is next??

I have been unemployed for two years now. Was at my last job for exactly 4 years and went in one morning to have my manager tell me that the company is in its second round of layoffs and I am on the list. My unemployment insurance ran out last month and I apply for jobs online every day. My savings ran out, I am 33 years old and living with my father, I am thankful for him because if it was not for him I would be on the streets. I have been a graphic designer for about 8 years. I have sent my resume out to hundreds of listings and have only got two interviews this year, the first seemed to go great and the interviewer said I was qualified and a perfect fit……never heard back from him. The second went even better and then interviewer told me that hundreds of people have applied and that I would hear back from him. I did hear back only to hear that the position came down to me and another person and they chose the other person because they had more experience. While I was in school I worked as a barista at a coffee shop for 3 years, I have been applying for a job as a barista and can’t even get a call back for that!! I don’t know what to do?? I walked in a grocery store the other day to apply and asked for the manager only to have this little prick be condescending to me and say he “ran out of applications.” All I am looking for right now is any job to give me some kind of income because I would like to go back to school to further my education as well and I can’t find anything! So I would be grateful for a tier five extension!

Please don’t pass judgment on us fellow Americans who are trying to make ends meet. We would not be eligible to have collected any Unemployment Benefits if we had not already paid into the sysytem for years. Please help us to be able to become the “working class” again. America was built and survived on the backs of the “working Class.” Without any income, we have no hope and we will loose “our part of the Ameican Dream” that we have worked long term for. I am not blaming any body, just asking for some help to get through life every day. I think that the “99ers” issue should have been a major concern amongst the recent election officials and we might of had different results. I did not hear even one canidate mention a word about it (at least in California). Think about it, most voters are the working class (which includes retired or unemployed) could have had a huge impact on these past elections. Hungry and homeless voters tend to vote for canidates that will try to help their cause.

Dear Hell in Handbasket, It must be fun to paint the world with one really large brush. What about people who are senior citizens (my parents) and worked for 50 plus years & are STILL trying to work and contribute in their 70′s but cant get jobs? They can’t eat or pay mortgage without unemployment while they continue to look for jobs. They are certainly not deadbeats and have more than contributed to society. they are willing to work anywhere, but no one will hire them bc they are either over qualified or, I suspect, bc companies choose to employ younger people. So…please, don’t assume everyone on unemployment is a dreg of society, which is a really uninformed & unkind point of view.

I got a degree in 2006, worked for 3 years with it and lost my job in October 2008 due to the slow economy in my field. Looked and looked and LOOKED for a job for over a year and only landed one temporary part time job in all that time that lasted two months. Got approved for the Dislocated Workers program and went back to school to be RE-trained in another field – and unemployment ran out last month, leaving me with 5 months of school left before I graduate. If I were able to find a full time job, would I take it and quit school and not finish my degree? YES. Can I even find a part time job to work around my school schedule right now? NO, I cannot, but I keep trying. My spouse also lost his job and is also back in school being retrained in a different field. What are we and our two kids living on? HIS unemployment, and we’re struggling to pay the mortgage and put food on the table. In addition, this economy isn’t making us feel too comfortable that we’ll be able to get a job even after we graduate with new degrees – but in the meantime, PLEASE help by getting Tier 5 on the docket and PASSED. I’ve never experienced anything like this in my life and I’m 43 – never, ever had a hard time finding a job before! This is NUTS.

Please vote for the 99er extension !!!

the hell in a handbasket a**hole can kiss just that. I have always worked two or more jobs. I was working one full time and one almost full time, plus going to school for nursing. IO have three children, 11, 2, 1. I got laid off when i found out i was pregnant, then my other job laid me off a month after that. I have been looking for a job ever since and have had to put schooling on hold to try to keep a roof over our heads. How dare you classify me that way. It shown at the start of this month that i had some remaining and the next day i got a letter saying that due to a mistake, I had no more. we have recieved eviction notices every month since i started ue and this put us out of our home. We have to be out in a week. I dont have clothes that will fit my two youngest and have no place to go. transitional housing has a 18 month waiting list and section 8 has a 5 year and are not excepting any more at the moment. employers are taking advantage of this and paying minimum wage for jobs that normally pay above and if i were to take some of those jobs i would get less than if i had ue. if i were struggling before i sure would be struggling then. for you to say that I choose this for my children, and them to not have coats and shoes and most important a place to stay, and with so many in need there is no help available, then you are one sick sadistic s.o.b. I am ashamed to say that your mother didnt raise you good, she must have been a poor excuse for a mother, because she obviously hadnt shown you empathy, compassion and all the beautiful things that makes a good human being. I have givin a brand new down jacket off my back in the snow in seattkle to a man who had nothing but a cotton t-shirt where a punk a** like you would let him freeze, and you know what? I WOULD DO IT AGAIN!!!!!!!! its people like you that have run america in to the ground so do us all a favor and F off!!!!!!!!

It is so sad that the few of you who do have dont and cant understand what those of us who dont have are going through. I have been out of work for over 2 yrs and every week I look through the papers and web for ANY job I can do. Sadly I am able to find at least 20 pages of foreclosures and under 20 classified ads for jobs. None offer full time, benefits or only want the young, the 50+ have no chance. This was the land of opportunity and the declaration promises life, liberty and pursuit of happiness. Its just a piece of paper because all that it stood for no longer exists. To survive I will have to apply for TANF, SNAP, and other gov benefits, I have been left with no other option. How does that benefit our country that all of us 99ers and over 50′s can no longer hope or dream the American Dream, we are now a country of waste, wasted resources, wasted talents, and shame on all of you elected government officials for wasting our time with empty promises. Tier 5 should have been considered for the poorer Americans before tax breaks were extended for the RICH Americans. We are no longer a country with equal opportunities for all, you can only get our governments help if your rich. I suggest that all you Congressman, Senators, and yes Mr. President should hit the road and listen to the people who are in desperate need of help and stop talking to us about unrealistic dreams. There are NO jobs for Americans in our country. How proud I am that being an American in the USA means being poor as S*@T. Foreigners in our country have better chances than those of us born here. How F’d up is that. Mr. President, its time for you to grow some and get this crap under control. You certainly did CHANGE things as you promised us when you wanted our vote, this was not the CHANGE we expected. Now CHANGE things back, I want a job, I want security, I want hope for a future for myself and my children. I want my life back before you took over and ruined it for all of us.

I exhausted my 99 weeks 3 weeks ago, really bad situation. I sent out at least 10 applications per week, usually 15. I got my A.S. degree taking night classes while looking, now I am half way through my B.S.

Last week I applied with nearly every non shady security company in town, over 75 apps 45 mins each app. Suddenly 24 hours later, day before Xmas I got a call. One company wanted an interview on the following Tuesday.
While in the waiting room waiting for the HR rep, I started talking golf with some of the guys up front and talked about courses.
He than asked what I was applying for and why. I explained I had military experience and close to finishing my B.S. I then found out he was the OPS manager, and said can you make it to orientation tomorrow morning? Then offered a full time job, I admit it is an overnight position but I wasn’t about to turn it down. Offered decent pay plus benefits.
Wow that was close, never want to do that again.

Part 2 of 2
I have lived in our home for 14 years and was always up to date on my payments but they could care less, then there are the ridiculous electric bills, auto and home insurance and just the everyday bills. I also have a 14 year old son that has a chronic illness for the past 4 years and 4 months that requires him to have medical attention 2 or more times a week. But I have a sister that takes him when I couldn’t (when I was working) so I don’t miss work when I do have a job. In 15 weeks my last extension on my unemployment will end for good. I have no clue how we will survive. I would sell out home in a heartbeat if I could but my mortgage payments are lower than any rental I have come across. I have no clue where we will go from here. I promised my 2 children still at home that we will never be homeless but I am really starting to worry. Does anyone have any suggestions? My ideal solution would be a full time job but it seems that is going to happen anytime soon. Though I pray every day for a job. And my 14 year old must have his medical care to make it every day. I currently do have health insurance on us but with the crazy cost probably won’t be able to afford it too much longer. HELP any suggestions???? So those of you people that say we are at home sitting on our fat bottoms eating bon-bons I can only hope that you are ever put in this situation.

I am only asking for one half of the pay I had made previously. I apply for part time positions and jobs even as a delivery driver. I just want to get out there and work. I have even called all my family and friends to ask them if they had odd jobs I could do, moving yards, cleaning houses, running errands, babysitting nearly everything just to bring in what additional money I can to make ends meet. Wells Fargo doesnt care I don’t have a job they still want my mortgage payment.

I have worked for a total of 18 years and I am only 30. I have been laid off for almost 2 years as a former Chemistry teacher. There should be a law passed where employers extend jobs to the unemployed first, this is totally ridicules-and beyond depressing. Right now I believe the only chance I have of having job security is to go back to school and become a nurse or a doctor. Through it all, God has proven Himself to be a great provider for my daughter and I! Trouble doesn’t last always.

I recently lost my job of 14 years due to incorrect information by sleeping employees and medical conditions through out myself and family. Errors happening between me and two other male employees and I was the only one terminated. Both envolved with double verification on the job and still nothing happening to them, and the company insisting on me telling all lies. I drew unemployment for 17 mths and I to am in for my mortgage and other bills, support my daughter and 3 grandchildren on nothing now. How are we suppose to survive, I have resumes in everywhere and talking of going back to school. I have a sister who graduated nursing in June of 2010 and has to work in a nursing home for 6 months or longer to qualify for a nursing position anywhere, unless she signs a 3 yr contract to work for them for so long or pay them money. These days and times are so sad.

It’s been almost three years since I’ve worked a traditional job. I’m a “99r” with two weeks of EB remaining. I would like nothing better than to be acknowledged by or better yet; hired by any employer that I’ve contacted in my search for gainful employment. At the onset of my new career/job search beginning three years ago, I was confident something better would come along (soon) after the last door was closed behind me. I continued my education, making my way through grad school. I took out student loans (incurring more debt), certain I would be able to pay everything back because I would be more valuable to employers and would find work easier. Silly me- I havn’t gotten any offers after sending countless resumes, networking ops and online applications generated. I choose to be a good parent and role model to my children who are also in college. The mortgage still is due every month, the bills continue to roll in every month, we continue to want to eat on a regular basis. My reality is: disasterous financial collapse and loss of everything including hope, which will come crashing in one week after my last EB check is sent. I hope to God, a tier 5 provision will be passed to help buy time for all of the families of hard working Americans who want, need, and appreciate work!

I have a friend in Bagram AFB, civilian, my same age and alot less educated than I am making 300K tax free and I ask myself what in the hell am I doing here unemployed?
