Losing Your Suit

I usually tell job seekers to make sure their interview clothes are ready the night before an interview, so they don't have to scramble to get ready at the last minute. I take that advice back.

Don't wait to be sure that all your interview attire is in order. The college student who (good thinking) decided to get his clothes ready early for a career fair got an unpleasant surprise recently. He couldn't find his one and only good suit. It wasn't in his dorm. It wasn't at home. It wasn't anywhere.

He's lucky that he has time to buy a replacement, but it's still stressful to have to find the time to go last minute suit shopping.

Instead, take the time, in advance, to prepare to interview, including making sure that you have at least one full set of professional interview clothes - from suit to socks and shoes - ready all the time, so you won't have to scramble at the last minute and so you're prepared to interview on your short notice. Also, make sure that you know where it is!

Another reason it’s important to do this is because, if you’re like I was in college or between jobs, you don’t always have the money to buy a suit at the last minute. Or maybe you can’t afford to pay for an express cleaning the day before. Or your white shirt has a huge stain on it. The last thing you want is to be suit-less and broke the morning of an interview!
