College Grad Job Market Outlook

nullThe good news is that the college graduate job market isn't any worse than it was last year and starting salaries are up a bit.

The not-so-good news is that it is still very competitive for college seniors and recent graduates seeking entry level jobs.

CareerBuilder's Annual Job  Forecast reports that the total number of employers planning to hire recent college graduates in 2010 - 44%  - is relatively unchanged from last year.   However, 21% of employers who are hiring recent college graduates said they will hire more than they did last year.  16%  of employers reported they will offer higher starting salaries than they did in 2009, up  from 11% last year.

If you're a college senior seeking employment, keep in mind that there is job search help available.  Most college career offices provide career counseling, drop in sessions for quick meetings with a counselor, seminars, workshops, recruiting and networking programs, job and internship listings, and resume and cover letter critiques.  Take advantage of this opportunity to get personal job search assistance.

Be sure, as well, to check the entry level job sites. You'll find job listings specifically for college students and graduates.  Use job search engines SimplyHired's New Graduate Jobs filter to view job listings relevant to your experience level, majors and skills.   Then click on the "Who Do I Know" button to get an  in-line view of your LinkedIn connections at the company.

Also check LinkedIn to see if your school has a LinkedIn Group where you can connect with alumni and view job postings and news. If you're new to LinkedIn, the LinkedIn Grad Guide will step you through the process of getting started.

Is employment outlook really that optimistic? Many experts also believe reports of economic recovery are greatly exaggerated. But perhaps there are always job opportunities for those who know where to look. Thanks for the article.

I personally do not believe statistics. I personally think the way in which we search for jobs and the job market in general will be changing to adapt with current conditions.
