What to Do When Unemployment Runs Out

Sunday July 5, 2009
The National Employment Law Project reports that both the number of unemployed workers and the percentage of workers who have been out of work for six months have reached record highs. The average length of unemployment is now over six months and workers are starting to run out of the extended benefits provided by the stimulus plan. I'm hearing from more and more people who are running out of unemployment benefits and aren't sure what to do next.

What can you do if your unemployment runs out or you're about to run out of unemployment benefits? First of all, check with your State Unemployment Office to make sure that you are receiving all the extended benefits you qualify for. If you're close to being out, take a look at the other resources that are available for unemployed workers and take advantage of whatever you can to help you get by until you find a new job.

Here's more on what to do when unemployment runs out.

I hate to say this because I am reacting out of frustration, and sometimes it comes back to bite me…but right now I could care less. When submitting for unemployment benefits, do not tell them you could be called back. Here’s my reason…

Due to losing my job a few years ago, I have been a substitute teacher for about two years. This year I attempted to file for unemployment just to make ends meet until this fall when classes resume and I am hopefully called again. Wouldn’t you know it, I was turned down because I revealed that I think they might call me back as soon as school starts. What a crock of BS. I was not guaranteed days or hours, but because I said i might get called they refused me. I really needed to have something (no matter how small)to help my family through these rough times. There are many who reap the benefits of free everything, but not me and my family. We’ve been paying into the tax coffers for over 40 years now, but we won’t see a dime of it…I am completely disenchanted by our country’s policies and open wallet to those who never contributed.
