How to Find a Job in My Area?

Monday May 18, 2009
One of the questions I'm asked on a regular basis is how to find a job in my area, as well as more specifically, how to find available jobs to apply for in my area.

The answer is to start local - when you need to find a job close to home, utilize the job search sites that focus on local jobs in your area. Use the job search engines to search by a radius of your town and by keyword. Use niche sites that focus on your local job market. Check the online help wanted ads for your local newspaper and if your Chamber of Commerce has a job board, check that, too. The more you focus your job search, the better luck you'll have finding listings that a good match for both where you want to work and for your skills.

Here's more on finding a job including ten steps you can take to find a new job. And to take it a step further, here's more advice on how to find a job, including online job searching, networking, using a headhunter, and more advice on where and how to find a job - fast.

I actually found my current job through — believe it or not — the want ad in our local paper. The prospective employer called, we hit it off on the phone and I got hired the next day. The stars were truly aligned on that one. Other jobs I’ve gotten through more traditional routes, such as, “I knew someone who knew someone.” Iv’e tried online sites but have not fared so well with them, I have to admit. I think you have some good tips, though, both here and on the other sites you link to. I’m forwarding them on to a friend for her just-graduated daughter.

Right out of college, I used college recruiting and that old standby of the times, “What Color is your Parachute?” Remember that one? It did have good tips! I wonder if it’s still around? Even if that one’s not, a great resource is “Job Coach for Young Professionals,” by Susan Kennedy and Karen Baker. It covers everything (it’s an interactive guide) to ID’ing and landing the right job. It talks about the online search (must confess it stresses networking, though — and explains how to do it, so you feel comfortable at it. My friend’s daughter? We’re giving this as part of her gift. That’s how much I like it.

Yes, I still use the tips from Parachute. I talk about this and more in my free report Finding the Job You Want.

I think that LinkUp site is brilliant — as an idea, not when I tried it. They should take those job listings and get rid 9 out of 10. Then print the list in order from closest to farthest away.
