Social media is rapidly becoming an integral part of how companies and recruiters source candidates for employment. For companies and recruiters, the Social Recruiting Summit 2009 will be held on June 15 at Google Headquarters. The summit is focusing on social media strategies and tactics that are being used today and the information that comes from it will help job seekers determine the social media strategies that are going to be the most beneficial for job searching.

In the meantime, for those who are job searching, social recruiting should definitely be on your radar and part of your job search plan. It's important to be aware of how companies are using social media to recruit, so you can use employers' recruiting tactics to your advantage and position yourself to be discovered by companies seeking candidates.

David Manaster, CEO, ERE Media, Inc. took time from his busy schedule to talk to me about what can you do to use social media to boost your career and enhance your prospects of finding a job.

David shared his advice on how job seekers capitalize on social recruiting. In addition, we discussed using Twitter and how something as simply as an @reply (a reply in response to your post) or a DM (direct message) from a hiring manager can help you, as David, says "Use our online connections to connect with 'real people' online. These human connections will serve you well in the long run and help you get a foot in the door at companies of interest."

I completely agree with utilizing online social resources to help in landing a job.

I’m founder of jobsbyblogs.com and our approach is positive, to provide job seekers with a platform to promote themselves. We are integrated with LinkedIn and twitter and also provide the ability to create your own video interview.

At a period where jobs are limited, to complement your job search, building up your own portfolio through blogging about job experiences could be very beneficial. Who said that only 2 pages should delineate a professional career.

I agree with this assessment as well, and while it may be difficult for some to get a grasp on, social media is coming into play on both the recruitment and potential employees side of things.

I was invited and spoke from a job seekers perspective at a workshop here this week on using blogging and social media to support your job search, and learned a few more things I hadn’t up until this point in my blogging, and using various social media sites to compliment my job search.

I was interviewed after by a reporter who asked me about this in particular issue, with having to know social media, to get ahead in the job search and employment in general.

And John, you make a great point about the ‘two page’ limit as it is no longer the case. In fact the facilitator of the event, Angelo Fernando, compared the reach in some respects between a business card, resume, other social media sites, and a blog, it was pretty interesting to see the reach of each based on particular criteria.
