I've heard from more than a few people this week who reminded me how important it is for job seekers to take the time to target their resumes and cover letters. One hiring manager told me, "What really stands out to me, as an employer, is a letter from an informed candidate that tells me specifically why my company is of interest." Another said, "I wanted to hire the candidate as soon as I saw her resume." These are just a couple of examples of why taking the time to target your resumes and letters is not just beneficial, but necessary.
When you do some of the work for the employer - showing them why you are qualified for the job - you are making the hiring process simpler all the way around. You're also going to have a better shot at getting interviews and getting hired. So, do put the effort into creating targeted job application materials, especially in this very competitive job market - it's worth the extra work and iis more important now than ever.
