U.S. Census Jobs

Wednesday December 31, 2008
The U.S. Census Bureau is recruiting temporary part-time census takers for the 2010 Census. Census taker jobs are excellent opportunities for retirees, college students, persons who want to work part-time, persons who are between jobs, or just about anyone who wants to earn extra money while working in their local community.

Pay is competitive and the hours are flexible - from 20 hours to 40 hours a week. The minimum term of employment for census takers is six to eight weeks, with the option to extend the term.

To apply, call the toll-free Jobs line at 1-866-861-2010 and schedule an appointment to take the employment test. Then download the job application form and I-9 form and bring them with you to your appointment. There's also a Census Practice Test you can take before you go.

What most people don’t know is that there are a lot of OFFICE positions necessary between now and then, too! Each Local Census Office is responsible for providing materials to those in the field. Some of us are keying applications, some will be doing payroll.

What most people also don’t know is that census employment is practically a scam. The people hired for “four to eight weeks” in fact worked for two or three, and there’s no “option to extend the term.” People were laid off and told to turn in their materials. They might be rehired in the fall and they might not be. Don’t expect anything from these people.
