More Job Cuts in the Forecast

Saturday December 6, 2008
You wouldn't think that the news on the employment front could get much worse, with unemployment reaching a 14 year high and the most jobs lost in a single month (533,000) in over 30 years. Unfortunately, there is more bad news on the horizon.

The Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) is the world's largest association devoted to human resource management. The SHRM LINE Report shows that, in December, more human resource managers in the manufacturing and service sectors plan to cut payrolls rather than hire, a first-time occurrence in the four-year history of the report. 31% of human resource managers surveyed plan to cut payrolls while only 20.1% plan to hire in December.

That, of course, makes it even more difficult to job search. What is the best way to find a job in a really tough job market? Do you need help, or do you have tips to share? Here's advice on how to job search in challenging times and here's how to include your job search tips on the list.

It's also really important to make sure that you stand out from the job search crowd, and it is a crowded job market, these days. You will need to get noticed and be one of those compelling candidates who differentiates themselves from the competition.

It’s important to differentiate yourself - that’s part of being a compelling candidate. Make sure your thank you note reinforces your candidacy. Be polite to every gatekeeper you meet, from reception to the VP’s assistant. Use every phone call as an opportunity to build better relationships within the organization you’d like to join.
