Do You Have a Favorite Job Site?

Sunday October 19, 2008
I read an article the other day that said that most job seekers have a favorite job site and they typically stick with it when they are job searching. There are so many job sites, that it can can be hard to know which job sites to use. So, I'm interested in knowing if you have a favorite and why you like it.

If you're just starting a job search, how do you begin to find jobs that match your skills and interests? It can help to look in less places, rather than more. It makes sense to narrow and focus your job search, using sites that match the type of job you're seeking.

Also, use the job search engine Advanced Search options to search by keywords, job title, type of employer, type of position, and location to generate a list of job postings that match your skills and interests.

I’ve had amazing luck over the years with job search engine Indeed.com. I can’t even remember the last time I went straight to a big, general site like monster or hotjobs.

(2) Austin says:

Myfirstpaycheck.com is a great site for high school and college students looking for part-time work. Not only does myfirstpaycheck.com have a lot of jobs, but it has great advice and educational resources for teens as well.

(3) Toshia says:

I really like Indeed.com as well. It shows results from other large search engines, like monster, as well as company sites so you don’t need to visit various sites.

(4) Carla says:

My favorite job search site is indeed.com as well. I like it for the same reasons already mentioned. Additionally, I like the fact that they save your searches and the # of jobs that you clicked on for each search. This helps me to remember which searches yielded a lot of results vs. those that were useless. I can say, that most jobs that I have been interested in I have found on indeed.com…

I’m the career advice expert for a new site called GreatPlaceJobs.com. When working for a great employer is so important, GreatPlaceJobs offers job seekers the peace of mind that comes from only searching job descriptions from companies that have been certified as great places to work. As a bonus, jobs posted on indeed.com that meet GreatPlaceJobs criteria will appear in GPJ searches!

We are planning many exciting opportunities for members in addition to job seeking functionality. Stay tuned: http://www.greatplacejobs.com.

I’ve had a lot of luck with Indeed.com. They have really neat salary statistics, and are super responsive to user suggestions.

(7) Shannon says:

I work in nonprofits, and have found that idealist.org and bridgestar.org are my favorites

(8) JobRadio.fm says:

I think Indeed & SimplyHired are the ultimate job search experience. They make your hunt much more efficient and save you tons of time.

(9) Sara says:

I found Jobfox through Google and was really impressed by its technology. They had me answer insightful questions about my experience and my goals and matched me to some great jobs. Unlike other job boards, I felt like Jobfox really knew me. I suggest checking them out.

November 10, 2008 at 4:39 pm
(10) Michael says:

I found Jobfox to be the worst of all the job sites. It took me about 1/2 hour to fill out a ton of questions even after I had already submitted my resume. I got about 4 matches and tried to introduce myself to top employers and never heard anything back…

(11) Nicole says:

Yahoo! Hotjobs has consistently provided candidates that have netted into top performing candidates. I highly recommend this search avenue.

November 11, 2008 at 11:59 am
(12) Heidi says:

Yahoo HotJobs is my favorite site. They don’t have the pop ups or flashing advertisements everywhere, the site is very user friendly and I find that I actually hear back from recruiters on this search tool.

I highly recommend using HotJobs if you are in the job hunting market these days!

November 11, 2008 at 12:00 pm
(13) Dan says:

I have used many of the sites on this list and find that HotJobs gets me the best results. I’m actually advertising my jobs right on Yahoo! and bypassing the job board these days. It’s cheap compared to posting my jobs on the boards to the same old candidates. It’s so easy and gets me the best results.

November 11, 2008 at 12:06 pm
(14) Jim says:

As an employer I find working with HotJobs and their staff to be the best experience when dealing with internet recruiting sites. Their customer service is head and shoulders above the rest of the industry and they have the most extensive product offerings.

November 11, 2008 at 12:07 pm
(15) Michelle says:

Ever since I can remember I have used Yahoo Hot Jobs on my job search. I have always able to land a interview or get some type of response using that jobsite. It’s very user friendly.

November 11, 2008 at 12:09 pm
(16) Samantha says:

I love Yahoo! HotJobs. The training I received from my representative was amazing. They really care about me and I have never found that with a job board. My response has sky rocketed!!! Their Real Playbook is the bees knees.

November 11, 2008 at 12:11 pm
(17) Marcia says:

I love HotJobs! I have had more applies from Yahoo! HotJobs than any other jobs board. We are always looking for very specialized talent and I can always count on Premium Placement and Smart ads to get the job done.

November 11, 2008 at 12:13 pm
(18) Brad says:

I use Yahoo! on a daily basis for email and fantasy sports and love the fact that I receive relevant job listings while I’m using yahoo! There is a much larger selection of jobs with Yahoo! HotJobs and it seems like they have more advanced technology than other job boards to help employers link up to good candidates.

November 11, 2008 at 12:20 pm
(19) Mike says:

One of the most infuriating things about monster is the advertising that gets in the way of the actual job search. Its a tacky move on their part to try and trick you into filling out ad forms. Better to use a site that respects your intelligence. Just show me the jobs!

November 11, 2008 at 12:27 pm
(20) Maria says:

I have been using CareerBuilder as an employer for the last 1.5 years and have come to realize that their customer service and quality of candidates has been in a steep decline. Recently, we have adopted HotJobs and I can say they continue to meet all of our needs.

November 11, 2008 at 12:42 pm
(21) Joe Montana says:

I would have to go with Yahoo! HotJobs. Seems like any employer worth applying to is on there. Also, I love their keyword search and matching functionality. It also helps that I have a Yahoo! account, I’m one-click away from career information and exploring a new opportunities by visiting the HotJobs portal.

November 11, 2008 at 12:49 pm
(22) Techbie says:

I vote for Y!, HotJobs. It is simply the best.

November 11, 2008 at 1:44 pm
(23) Robert says:

Realmatch and jobfox got a surprisingly larger number of votes then I would have suspected. Now as for Yahoo/hotjobs…they had 67 votes yesterday and today they have 1900….something is fishy guys.

November 11, 2008 at 2:35 pm
(24) Dan says:

I have to agree, something seems a little off with all the Yahoo comments, but as a recruiter I really use their site & really find it to be the most successful resource out there. They have made some serious strides in the past few years.

November 11, 2008 at 3:17 pm
(25) Matthew says:

Indeed and Simplyhired do not work directly with employers, in other words, you cannot simply post your job there. Craigslist and Realmatch allow employers to post their jobs for free.

November 11, 2008 at 3:36 pm
(26) Danita says:

Now Yahoo has 2300 votes up from 1900 an hour ago. The yahoo folks are looking kinda desperate right now.

November 11, 2008 at 3:58 pm
(27) NotJobs says:

Come on HotJobs. The contrived comments and the ever-increasing votes for yourself are becoming pretty transparent:

“It also helps that I have a Yahoo! account, I’m one-click away from career information and exploring a new opportunities by visiting the HotJobs portal.”

Seriously “Joe Montana”?(QB of the San Francisco 49′ers – anyone else think this is a HJ employee in the bay area?).

November 12, 2008 at 11:49 am
(28) Kevin says:

Wow, did Yahoo make it a Monday morning meeting item for their employees to come here and post?

Both Yahoo and Careerbuilder have shot up after this poll closed and Alison posted the results. Sounds like their management wasn’t happy about losing but real users prefer Indeed.com.

November 12, 2008 at 2:00 pm
(29) Bob says:

I want to hear from the people who posted here if there is something specific that you like about the job sites. Or they feel strongly about something that they don’t like.

November 12, 2008 at 4:59 pm
(30) Dantheman says:

I want one environment where I can view jobs and apply to jobs with one button…some of those sites take you to different screens, different sites, you have to start over on every single one….Its annoying.

November 13, 2008 at 3:43 pm
(31) Caitlin says:

Craigslist does not allow you to post jobs for free, at least not last time I checked…

March 11, 2009 at 8:08 am
(32) Stephen says:

I like niche sites like ContinuingCareers.com

March 25, 2009 at 12:22 am
(33) Donna says:

I like Yahoo’s hotjobs the most. Monster is kindda nice. I bumped into this site called hawtjobs which i think is kindda cool. Very clean and simple. They arent many jobs though.
