Interviews and Cell Phones

Monday April 7, 2008
Phone Interview I spoke to two people this week who had bad experiences trying to get through a phone interview on their cell phones. The interviewer couldn't hear the first candidate because of static on the line. The second call got dropped and by the time the candidate was able to reconnect with the hiring manager, it was too late - the time available for the interview was over. If you have any doubt about your cell phone service, schedule your phone interview for a time when you can use a landline. It's not worth jeopardizing a job opportunity because of the possibility of a dropped call.

It's also important to prepare for a phone interview as carefully as you do for an in-person interview, because telephone screening is often the first step in the interview process and if you don't do well, that will be the end of your opportunity to get hired. Don't forget to send a thank you note - it's always important to thank the interviewer, regardless of how you were interviewed.
