When the Holidays Get in the Way

Thursday January 3, 2008
I received an email yesterday from someone who had interviewed for a new job just before Christmas. His application, he thought, had got lost in the midst of the holiday season, and he wasn't sure how to follow up to make sure that his candidacy wasn't lost in the transition to the New Year and the pile of work waiting for the hiring manager when she got back to the office.

I suggested he send a follow up note reiterating his interest in the position and offering to provide any further information the hiring manager might need. That way, he can remind the employer that he's interested and available, even though a couple of weeks have past since the interview.

Staying in touch with hiring managers is usually very profitable. I call it “watering the plant”. Some managers are like cactus - - touch base only occasionally; others are like summer flowers - - they need to be watered frequently. It only takes a short amount of time to drop an email to each contact. When you do, you greatly enhance your name with the hiring manager or interviewer. It is as though you were swinging the bat at pitched balls. The more you swing, the more likely you are to hit one.
