The Importance of Getting it Right

Sunday December 30, 2007
I've mentioned before how important it is to write resumes that make you stand out from the crowd and how valuable it can be to write cover letters that are targeted specifically to the position you are applying for. On a much more basic level, it's really important to get it right.

If you are applying for a job at a university, for example, don't say that you are interested in a position with an agency. Don't write three paragraphs about your background and your goals without mentioning what position you are applying for and why you are qualified.

To take it one step further, don't even bother if your skills and background aren't related to what the company does or to any current or future openings. All you are doing is wasting the employer's time, as well as your own. On a more positive note, well written, focused and targeted (correctly) application materials can help you win an interview, and get the job. It's worth taking the time to get it right!
