Extreme Commuting Wins Over Relocation

Think you have a long commute? A Korn/Ferry International Survey reports that more executives than ever before are open to "extreme commuting," which involves traveling by plane to work and back each week for more than 90 minutes one way every day, rather than relocating for a new job.

More than half of the recruiters surveyed believe it is harder than in the past to get someone to relocate, mostly because of family, lifestyle, and housing cost issues. On the other hand, 80% of the recruiters noted that that employers are at least somewhat open to having their executives conduct frequent business travel instead of moving.

So, if you've got a good job offer that might mean relocating, it certainly can't hurt to consider other alternatives. You don't know how flexible your future employer will be unless the ask (and it's something you could negotiate as part of your compensation package).
