Reasons to Quit Your Job

Friday November 9, 2007
I was talking to a friend last night. He started a new job earlier this fall and it hasn't turned out to be anything like he expected. He left a flexible work environment where there wasn't much in the way of schedules, but where everyone did what it took to get the job done, for a position at a organization that turned out to be a bureaucratic nightmare.

Employees, even on salary, have to punch a timeclock (the old fashioned kind) and get a note from the doctor whenever they miss work. There is no flex time or telecommuting, or anything even remotely like fun in his current job.

I told him that more than I few years ago, I was offered a job with rules and regulations like that. In fact, you had to raise your hand if you needed to use the restroom or get a drink of water, and there were strict guidelines on how long you could be gone. Despite the fact that they called me back three times to offer me more money, I wouldn't take it. Why? Because I couldn't imagine, to be honest, working in an environment that was that rigid.

For my friend, I think he has a good reason to pursue other jobs, even though he hasn't been in this one very long. I know other people, too, who have had the same experience - as soon as they started the new job, they knew it wasn't going to work out. Or, something changed at their current position and it became an awful place to work.

There are good reasons to quit your job even when it's a new one - new challenges, more money, your company is in financial trouble, you need to relocate, or your circumstances have changed. How about when the reasons that aren't so clear - like the work environment, not-so-good boss, too many hours, difficult co-workers, or you just don't like it? Comment (below) or post a response in the Forum and let me know what you consider a good reason to quit your job.

I’ve always gone by the rule that if I wake up in the morning and absolutely can’t stand the thought of going to work, it’s time to find a new job.

I think I grew out of my job. I was interested in learning it at first. In fact, I had wanted to work in the library field for some time.

But once I mastered it, it became boring. Plus, they started with all the rules - tell us when you get here, notify a boss when you go to break and get back, etc. And what really helped me make the decision to quit was that they didn’t want me to be assisting patrons other than to tell them where the restroom was.

I am not the family breadwinner and I have another side gig, so I felt it was fine to quit.
