Tattoos and Your Job Search

Saturday July 7, 2007
I received an email the other day from someone who wondered whether his long hair, facial hair, and tattoos were hurting his chances of getting a job. He was applying for jobs at restaurants and stores and, despite being dressed appropriately, nobody was giving him the time of day.

He most likely was right on target. There are employers, especially in the hospitality and retail industries, that are very concerned about the appearance of their employees. Many employers have company policies limiting facial hair and body art.

However, there are also employers who hire candidates with visible tattoos and piercings. The Modified Mind Employment Line has a list. Some allow small tattoos, others limit the number of piercings you can have. Still others have no limitations at all, including a few that had a company policy stating they did not discriminate based on tattoos or piercings. High on the list of employers with few restrictions are information technology, technical trades, and call centers.
