Wal-Mart Celebrates with Bonuses

Friday March 23, 2007
Wal-Mart, the largest private employer in the United States, rewarded its U.S. associates with more than $529.8 million in associate bonuses as part of Associate Celebration Day. Wal-Mart also announced a Servant Leadership bonus to recognize store and club associates who have been with the company for 20 years or more, and a Customer Champion award program to reward associates who provide outstanding customer service.

Wal-Mart's critics however, of which there are many, aren't that impressed. BusinessWeek.com reports that the average $650 each associate received has been compared to the $3.94 million bonus and the total compensation package of $15.7 million that Wal-Mart Chief Executive Lee Scott received for the prior fiscal year. The article also noted that the bonus announcement (the first bonuses announced publicly in twenty years) has been construed by some as a way to reduce.
