If you have visited this site regularly (or even once in a while) over the years, you have probably read what I've written about not lying on your resume or your job applications. I always say that you need to be accurate and truthful. If you lie, I've said on numerous occasions, you might not get caught right away, but, you will probably get caught at some point - and you could end up getting fired.

Not everyone agrees with me. One reader told me that it's fine to take educated risks to get ahead. Here's a good example though, of why it's important to be truthful. I read in the Police Blotter section of my local paper this morning (we don't have much crime in my small town, so, sometimes, I'm surprised at what is considered newsworthy) that a 49 year old woman, who will rename nameless, was charged with offering a false instrument for filing, which is a misdeameanor. The Police Report said that she put false information on a job application.

It would be interesting to know more about why the employer decided to take action, but I couldn't find any more information. Regardless of the details, this is a good reminder that not telling the truth can come back to haunt you. Remember, too, there are creative ways to address employment issues - without lying about them.
