Leaving a Bad Job

Wednesday August 3, 2005
From the Forum:
"The company is imploding, lots of HR-type violations, no structure and one of my superiors is abusive. I want to leave but I've only been there 4 months. I don't want it to look like I'm flighty or that I couldn't handle it but I have no choice but to leave." Any advice to offer?

As hard as it may sound stay where you are until you have something under your feet. Anyone you interview with can understand that you may be working under adverse conditions, but do not, I repeat do not get into a lot of name calling/bashing of your current/former employer. Nothing sounds worse than sour grapes to a prospective employer. Get connected to a reputable recruiter in your industry, either ask around or go to www. recruitinglife.com (the web-site for the NAPS, the National Association of Personnel Services, and link by state, or specialty), and find one or two firms you can work with. Don’t pay anyone a fee for finding a job, but do find one that knows your industry and/or profession. Be pro-active and don’t bitch about it.
