Unemployment Extension

By January 29, 2004

Follow me on:

One of the questions I am frequently asked is "What's happening with an extension of unemployment benefits?" Millions of workers have run of benefits (the estimate is 2 million during the first six months of this year) and there is no extended unemployment benefits program in place, though there is legislation on the calendar in Congress... (8) Linda says:

Bush better take care of his own when it comes to unemployment extensions. I am one month away from losing benefits and have paid into this benefit for 40+ years.. Something is wrong with this picture. Did I not recall somewhere that some of the unemployed can receive this benefit for a year if need be.

(9) Lenny says:

This is my last week on unemployment, I don’t know what I’m going to do. I hold a BS in Accounting but I just can’t find a job and I don’t have any money to learn another skill (back to school). I know some countries pay for reeducation or training, why can’t we have it here, too.

(12) John Baca says:

My unemployment ran out months ago but the President and Congress have AUTOMATIC Pay raises and LOTS more so why should they care about John Q Public? Neither a degree, nor experience seem to be worth anything these days. When business complains Congress drops the prime rate then bails out the corporations forgetting its you and I at the bottom who still have to Work, eat, pay HIS taxes and still live somewhere. I’m a VETERAN and Bush should be ashamed to know his policies caused 1 in 4 of ALL those who are HOMELESS to be VETERANS! I have access to minimum wage jobs too but gas prices are so high I can barely make enough to get me TO work..so whats the point?!? Most of the country will need to be bailed out soon!

Me too. I have two weeks left, and have applied for more jobs than imaginable. I e-mailed the CT dept of labor to see how we go about getting the extensions processed asap.
I will let you all know if I receive a response. Has anyone tried calling , I couldn’t get through.

July 1, 2008 at 11:55 am
(16) Therese says:

I’m back , actually spoke with someone at Gov Rell’s office and if you go to your Dept of labor website , there is an alert concerning the extensions. I was advised to keep checking the site daily for updates, and they would be contacting us by mail.

(20) Annie says:

I everyone I’m in the same boat as you are I ran out of unemployment the first week of june I’ve been on the internet applying for jobs I even went to the recruting office to fine out about my resume that I sent in they told me that they were all back up. I apply for a job just about everyday no luck. I pray and I cry trying to figure out how I’m going to make it we need help.

July 3, 2008 at 5:56 pm
(21) Chuck Wow says:

M Reyes – That has to be the most idiotic question I have ever heard !!

Unemployment insurance is intended to help people while they are looking for a job – not free money given to someone until they decide they “want to start working again” !

Must be rough having to decide when you do or do not want to work.

(24) TC says:

WELL FOLKS, HERE WE ARE, NINE DAYS AFTER THE “ALERT” WAS POSTED ON THE CTDOL WEBSITE, AND NOTHING APPEARS TO BE HAPPENING. NEITHER THE WEBSITE MESSAGE, WHICH INSTRUCTS US NOT TO TELEPHONE CTDOL BUT TO CONTINUE CHECKING THE WEBSITE FOR UPDATES, NOR THE CTDOL TELEBENEFITS RECORDED MESSAGE, WHICH IS ESSENTIALLY THE SAME AS THE WEBSITE’S, HAS CHANGED IN ANY FASHION. EMAILS TO THE GOVERNOR’S OFFICE, THE COMMISSIONER OF THE DOL AND STATE REPRESENTATIVES AND SENATORS ASKING WHY CTDOL IS LAGGING SO FAR BEHIND ALL OF OUR NEIGHBORING STATES, ALL OF WHICH HAVE MADE A LOT MORE PROGRESS IN THIS MATTER THAN CTDOL, AS EVIDENCED BY THE CONTENTS OF THEIR RESPECTIVE DOL WEBSITES, HAVE YIELDED ONE RESPONSE, ON 07/08 FROM ONE LUIGI FULINELLO OF GOV. RELL’S STAFF, WHICH SIMPLY PARROTED THE INITIAL POSTING ON THE CTDOL WEBSITE. WHY ALL THE APPARENT FOOT-DRAGGING AND NEARLY PASSIVE-AGGRESSIVE “DON’T CALL US” NONSENSE? MAKES ONE WONDER WHETHER WE HAVE COMPETENT PUBLIC SERVANTS OR NOT. ALTERNATIVELY, YOU COULD WONDER WHETHER THE STATE IS POSSIBLY PLAYING THE FLOAT WITH THE FUNDING. ONE THING SEEMS CLEAR. THE LACK OF ANY MEANINGFUL RESPONSES OR INFORMATION COMING FROM THE STATE ON THIS MATTER APPEARS TO INDICATE THAT THE FOLKS RUNNING THE SHOW DO NOT REGARD THOSE OF US WHO MAY RECEIVE ANY BENEFIT UNDER THIS PROGRAM AS AN IMPORTANT GROUP OF CONSTITUENTS. I GUESS THAT THEY DO NOT UNDERSTAND THAT THE “E” IN EUC 08 STANDS FOR EMERGENCY. SINCE THEY DON’T REGARD IT AS THEIR EMERGENCY, THEY ARE LOATHE TO ACT ON ANYONE ELSE’S BEHALF WHEN THEY THEMSELVES DO NOT STAND TO DIRECTLY BENEFIT. i WONDER JUST HOW MUCH OF A DONATION HAS TO BE MADE TO WHOM IN ORDER TO GET ANY MEANINGFUL CONSTITUENT SERVICE?

(25) Annie says:

I called the unemployment office yesterday, spoke to the lady there she inform me that some of us want get a letter, your unemployment would had to ran out before or after May 1, 2007 i told her that my benefits exausted the first week on June this years she said I might not be qualified for the benefits now will some one out there please tell me if I not qualified for an extention how I’m I suppose to pay my rent, electric, gas, buy food for my family I thought this was for people all who have exausted there funds may be someone can explain this for me because I don’t understand how we are suppose to make it I’m applying for jobs just about everyday on the internet no luck so can someone out there please give me an answer pleases.

(27) TC says:

WELL, CTDOL FINALLY, TWO WEEKS AFTER THE ENACTMENT OF THE ENABLING LEGISLATION, GOT AROUND TO UPDATING ITS WEBSITE ONFORMATION TODAY. SURPRISE, THEY’RE GOING TO NEED SIX(6) WEEKS TO IMPLEMENT THEIR PLAN TO PAY EXTENDED BENEFITS TO QUALIFIED UNEMPLOYED CLAIMANTS. THIS IS TRULY REMARKABLE, IN THAT ALL OF OUR NEIGHBORING STATES WERE ABLE TO FIGURE OUT HOW TO PUT THEIR PLANS INTO ACTION IN JUST OVER ONE WEEK. THIS DOES NOT EVEN GET CLOSE TO PASSING THE SMELL TEST.

My unemployment extension runs out at the end of October. I have been looking for a job for 9 months and there is nothing available. Is there going to be a 13 week additional benefits? I depend on this for my mortgage. Without this I will be one of the homeowners filing foreclosure.

(36) Jenn says:

My unemployment has run out as of last Friday. I don’t know what to do and completely frustrated with the way the government is handling this. Let’s bail out other countries but screw our own. Let’s give these CEO’s time to play and use that bailout money to go have fun. Lets let the rest of us lose everything. My only saving grace is that I don’t have a child, if I did I don’t know what I would do. Do they not realize if they don’t fix some of this soon the crime rates are going to be through the roof not to mention the suicide rates. God help us all

October 16, 2008 at 12:07 pm
(37) Valerie says:

When I filed my bi-weelky claim last Sunday I found out that I have only one week of benefits left, several people have told me that there is another extension of 7 weeks in addition to the 13 weeks I recieved back in June but the problem is is that when I contacted the UC office in my area they know nothing about an extension. What the hell is going on, has anyone else heard of the extension or am I crazy, heard it on the news, read it on the computer and in the newspaper but no one working for the UC office knows anything about it. WE NEED HELP!!!!, all of us that are trying to feed our children and keep a warm roof over their heads this winter. Bush needs to get his head out of his ass and get some help for us. Bail out the rich and let the middle class become homeless, thats exactly whats happening!!!!

October 17, 2008 at 12:51 am
(38) Sharon says:

Hurricane Ike hit on the same week of my last unemployment check. Right when the money was desperately needed and no extension in sight, What in the world is our President thinking? After going through a natural disaster now no unemployment benefits left. Another personal disaster on top of a natural disaster. President Bush: Just sign the damn bill for an unemployment extension. This is the time when it is needed the most. The big money who contributed to this economic mess is bailed out but our president cannot help bail us out. Unemployment extension is only a temporary bailout. The ones who created this mess is a long term bailout. Why is our dear president and elected officials turning their backs on us who need it the most? This is so very sad. We stand to lose everything including our home. We are right at the edge. Without an unemployment extension we will most definitely go under.

(40) Mel says:

The 7 week extension has not been passed. The House passed it, but the Senate refused to even look at it. Pelosi is trying to get the Senate back together to force them to vote on it, but it’s not a done deal yet. She is also trying to get a longer extension (13 weeks, I think) for states w/ unemployment 6% or higher.

(41) Raheem says:

I have never been without a job this long, my unemployment extension ran out on top of this I now have one child and one on the way. I’ve always stood in fierce opposition of government assistance, now I don’t know what to do. We are probably gonna be on the streets in 10 days. I feel like a failure. I think my children would be better off without me. This so depressing and frustrating!!

Wake up Big Boys in Washington we put u there to help and ignoring this problem what millions of people out of work and more everyday is not going away……….we need that extension. I will be living in a homeless shelter soon with my kids or a tent city I see them popping up everywhere. Don’t the politicans have TV? This is real and someone needs to help us and soon………………….I paid my taxes for unemployment insurance and I need it now. How bout I don’t pay my taxes or when I feel like it..I would be penalized rite….Well come on WASHINGTON how would u like to live on the streets or in your car, oh that is rite I already Lost my car. (43) Mel says:

I did get a job in August, it last 6 weeks and there corporate sent out a national news they are cutting 4000 jobs. So guess what I am back on my extension unemployment, that I now only have 3 weeks left. I am a single mom of one teenager. This is my third layoff in 2 years. I will tell you all if you don’t know this you can work part-time or even take a day here or day there while on unemployment, you just have to “show” what you made and will deduct that from that amount. Now you are saying why work if you get the same amount, well sometimes its a little more, I still don’t know how they figure it. But the point is that you will get out there and meet other people and it will help extend the money you have left in your unemployment.

(44) Gerry says:

I have been unemployed for a year, and where I live there are no real jobs. I have applied for many jobs and can’t even get an interview because I’m either too old , over qualified, or under qualified. I even tried to start my own business so I could go back to work in fact I invested all of my savings into it. And because IL. let some legislation expire and didn’t renew it for over half of a year, I could never aquire the proper business license required to do my work, and I lost everything I put into it. Then I spent more money which I did not have to go take classes and get my insurance producers licenses to sell health and life insurance on straight commision because it was all the work I could find around here. But no one can afford health insurance so I have yet to make a dime, and now my unemployment has run out and I am totally screwed! We’ll probably lose our house, and that will be difficult on my child I don’t know how to explain this to a child. I’ve tried really hard to make some way to replace my income to get off of unemployment and I’d never give up, but soon we’ll probably be pitching a tent in the snow to live in. I’ve worked a full time job since I was sixteen years old and now I’m 52. This is not fair to me or my family or any other American!

To Raheem (44), this is not YOUR fault and your children would NEVER be better off without you! I have been through 2 layoffs and am now back in college to earn a different degree, in hopes of landing a more stable job. You WILL get through this, even though it seems so hard right now. I know things will get better.

Raheem, you are not a failure. I just had to say this to you.

Take care,

(51) Gerry says:

Well tomorrow 10/31/2008 will be a Halloween I’ll never forget! It’ll surely be the scariest one for my family and I ever because tomorrow will be the first time in 36 years that I haven’t had an income. My unemployment was small compared to my regular income but at least we were keeping our heads barely above water. Now I’m completely done and have little or no hope and no where to turn to. I filled out three more applications today but it is depressing because I can’t even get a damn interview from anybody! I don’t know how I’m going to tell my banker who has treated me like a trusted friend that I have no way to pay him now. Our house payment is past due, and that will take all of our money to get caught up.I don’t know how much longer I can deal with this depressing mood that I am in. How can our government do this to us and sleep at night? I feel terrible for all of you who are in this same mess I’m in! Someone needs to help us quickly!

The house tryed to get another unemployment extension. But the white house shot it down. Reason they says it make unemployed people lazy and they don’t look for work. When I heard that on CNN! I all most had the big one. After Bush just shell out 700 bill for wall street. Not to say the pork in the bill like 100 mill for NASCAR and 2 mill for wooden arrows for kids. 90 mill for the RUM ind. What a losser. The only reason there are so many unemployed people is because the white house has dropped the ball. chuck

I’ve been unemployed for over a year. Had a job briefly for 5 weeks in April of this year but then came the layoffs. I was in the mortgage banking industry. I am hoping there will be another extension to unemployment benefits. Mine ran out in October. We need to bail out people not the companies who created this problem. Now the auto industry wants to be bailed out. They should restructure first. Their employees receive matching 401K benefits, pension, medical benefits, etc., etc., etc. which is very costly.

Would greatly appreciate comment from anyone who knows. Thanks!

I see today that another extension has been approved for California and certain other states.

Will I qualify? I can’t reach anyone – they are too busy taking their breaks and vacations and holidays and free sick leave in between working periodically

Hey Jamie,

It doesnt matter if you dont have a degree, this conutry wasnt built by people who had degree( I wont get into what it was built on). I will be graduating in 2 weeks, here in chicago with my bachelors and i have been trying to fnd jobs and have come up with nothing, i was laid off in feburary and have been on unemployment also. I find little jobs on CRAIGSLIST.com, they help me get extra cash, sometimes it is CASH!! My unemployment extensin will be up in 2 weeks and I hope I find a position because my student loans will kick in. If there are no jobs graduates, people will start to default their student loans. The state of the Economy is Horrible foe everyone and OUR GOVERNMENT whom we voted in are not doing what they promised us. They just bailed out CITIGROUP, WE need a freakin bailout!!! People are losing their homes, I dont get it, It is so Furstrating!!!

Hey guys,

Seriously check CRAIGSLIST.COM for small jobs in your area, check under GIGS some of them pay CASH. This has really helped!!

My mother also told me about a program called CEDA, they help families pay high heating/gas bills and light bills. PLEASE, PLEASE try this!!!!! the website is:

http://www.cedaorg.net/www2/index.htm

Click on APPLY FOR UTILITY BILL PAYMENT ASSISTANCE, link to the right.

I know some people aren’t keen on getting assistance but in these times when the government isnt helping and you need to keep a warm roof over your head put your pride aside and do it.

I had to relocate to las vegas I was laid off in MIchigan , my
family lives out here I had to move in with my mother, I have
only been on two job interviews, no one has called me back,
Iam trying to take free work-shops, so I can, know what this
work force actually wants, I have been in the medical field for
17 years, and I have applied at every hospital in las vegas, It is
a shame if congress does not pass more benefits, because there, crime rate will go up higher and everybody will be applying for welfare, Iam at my last 9wks left and I still dont
have a job, Iam 46yrs old, and Iam living with my mom
thank god she had a place for me to come too, I lost my apartment in michigan, and my position at Detroit Medical
center, Please help us pass this law, now they spend billions
of dollars on the war, and we cannot even afford personals
like toliet paper, paper towel deorandant, tooth paste, and they are feeding other courtries, I love Nance pelosi, she is the only one who is trying to get this law passed, they shouldnt have any problems in passing this, not unless they want us running wild on the streets, lets all just pray and give it to the LOrd, because these are the last evil days upon
this earth we need too keep GOd in the Plan, thanks for listiening

I am on my last three weeks. I don’t know what the hell we’re gonna do. I have a wife and kid. We will not have enough money for food.

This country just sucks. I’ve been looking for a job for ten months. There is nothing here in Ohio. I am thinking about leaving the country.

i have been unemployed from my job for over a year now. I have been looking since then for a job and no luck. I read all the newspapers and even look online and can’t find a job. what makes it even harder is i can’t even afford to own a car so i can’t even go branching for jobs. Well if there really was any out there. I was hoping to go to school but i have to wait till this fall to go. I hope that the gov will decide to approve or pass this. To show they care about their citizens and less about politics.

We live in a beautiful house, one that my four children and I may in fact just not be able to keep much longer. My husband lost his job in Dec. of 19 years on his birthday in 08. Found a job in 09, lost that job two weeks before Christmas. I may have to drop out of school to work; school is just too hard for me to do both as well raise my kiddo’s. Our House payment is 1300.00 a month that’s after the making home affordable program. The child support for my children will not cover all the house payment. What is God planning? What can this mean if this bill doesn’t pass soon? Just because Kentucky’s State Rep. has all he need can he really think that this will not affect him? It will affect all people and in every aspect of this economy. On “the news” we have all seen the evil people can do when in panic mode, I’m trying not to fear and trust in the Lord. I was thinking- on Monday I may just keep my children home for school and then thought, what about the day after that? I can not keep then home forever and if I did I’d have to home school, can’t afford that. I feel I’m losing so much and can not do any thing about it. I pray they will pass this bill for all people in need.
God Bless you; don’t harden your heart this too will pass.
Hopefully sooner than later!

I will be done with school this summer. Do I give up my dream for now, or finish and then hopefully find a job? We can lose the house, the school they love.
I just need to pray.
Sorry, Just venting-
